DSMNRU ex-VC & former LU prof Nishith Rai passes away
Lucknow: The first full-time vice-chancellor of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) and former professor and head of Ancient Indian History and Archaeology at
Lucknow University
, Prof Nishith Rai (61), passed away after prolonged illness on Tuesday.
Rai is survived by his wife, Aneeta Rai, son Vidhu Shekhar, an IAS officer, and daughter Shachi Rai, an assistant professor at Lucknow University's economics department.
The academic fraternity and students across the country and abroad mourned the demise of Prof Rai. He held various positions, including the director of the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies, and was a member of the executive council of various universities.
He was also the founder of a newspaper.
As a teacher, he guided around 30 PhD and four MPhil scholars.
Not just people in academia, but many senior leaders, including senior functionary of the
Samajwadi Party
, Shivpal Yadav, reached his residence and paid respect to the departed soul.

expressed grief over the demise of former VC of DSMNRU Prof Nishith Rai.
Yadav prayed for peace to the departed soul and prayed for strength to the bereaved family.

"Prof Rai and his entire family have always been associated with the socialist ideology. His demise is an irreparable loss to the academic world," he said.
"Prof Rai contributed immensely to the development of DSMNRU and took the institution to new heights. His demise is a loss for the entire university family. He was awarded the President's Award-2014 by then President Pranab Mukherjee for outstanding contribution in the field of disability," said DSMNRU VC Prof Sanjay Singh.
He said that during his tenure, the department of posts of the ministry of information and technology, issued a postage stamp on completion of 11 years of the establishment of DSMNRU in 2020.
"I have never seen such a soft-spoken and humble administrator. He did a lot for disabled students, including the establishment of an artificial limb and rehabilitation centre through which thousands of disabled people have been facilitated with limbs, assistive devices, and services, free of charge. He also established a specialised Centre for Indian Sign Language and Deaf Studies to cater to the special needs of deaf students," said former president of Lucknow University Associated College Teachers Association, Maulindo Mishra.
