Mumbai: A 75-year-old woman, who was returning to her Malabar Hill residence after yoga class, was crushed to death after she got pinned between a BEST bus and a parked car near Sahyadri State Guest House in south Mumbai on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Nita Shah, a widow. Police arrested the driver, Akshay Surve (46), and seized the bus. Surve, who was employed as a contractual driver with BEST for the past two years, was not drunk at the time of the incident, police added. Near Sahyadri Guest House, the driver suddenly heard a sound. He got off the bus and saw that a woman had come into contact with the left rear tyre and sustained a serious head injury. A car parked on the left side of the road was also damaged." Police personnel present at the state guest house rushed her to JJ Hospital, but she was declared dead before admission by the doctors. Surve was booked under sections 281 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act were also invoked in the case for driving dangerously. Police are yet to identify the owner of the private car. Shah, a resident of Prakash building in Malabar Hill, lived alone. Her husband, Nitin, passed away three years ago. Her son Nilesh lives abroad, and daughter Niyati Patel lives at Malabar Hill.
