BMC school wins prize days after students move out over unsafe bldg

Mumbai: Just weeks after 1,300 of its students were moved out because one of its buildings was declared unsafe, a BMC-run school in Colaba has won the Mukhyamantri Mazi Shala Sundar Shala award—meant to recognise high achieving schools in the state. The prize comes with Rs 11 lakh cash, which the management can spend at its discretion. The Civic run school had Urdu, Kannada, English, Hindi, and Marathi medium sections with close to 5000 children making it one of the largest municipal schools in Mumbai. A BMC official confirms that "the displaced students—mostly from English-medium section—were initially shifted to online classes before being relocated to another civic-run school in Colaba market, near the MTNL office. The school they have been shifted to required basic renovation before it could be occupied by the students, that's why it took time."
