Karate teacher sentenced to 5-year RI for sexually harassing four students
Pune: The court of Special Judge Kavita Shirbhate convicted a 44-year-old karate teacher and sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs40,000 for sexually harassing four students between 2018 and 2020. The teacher got an additional sentence of one year of imprisonment with a fine of Rs2,000 for wrongful confinement. If the fine of Rs40,000 is not paid, the accused will have to undergo additional imprisonment from 15 days to two months. If paid, the money will be equally disbursed among the victims as compensation. The court has also directed the Pune District Legal Services Authority to grant compensation to the victims. The teacher was, however, acquitted of charges of molestation and rape under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The prosecution's case was that the Sahakarnagar police arrested the teacher on June 30, 2020, after the students approached them with a complaint accusing him of sexual harassment while teaching karate. Konghe also demanded maximum punishment for him as he sexually harassed the students under the pretext of teaching them karate. The judge relied on the victims' evidence as it was cogent, reliable and corroborated with the FIR and statements recorded by them before a magisterial court.

Dance teacher denied bail for sexual assault of four minor boys
1 2 3 Pune: A special court rejected the bail plea of a dance teacher arrested on charge of sexually assaulting four minor boys in an English medium school in Warje-Malwadi Kavita Shirbhate, in her order of May 6, said, "The accused is in judicial custody since his arrest on Dec 17 last year. Police filed a chargesheet against him. The accused is involved in a serious offence. The CCTV footage shows him following the victim up to the washroom."The judge relied on the victim's statement to show that the teacher sexually assaulted him at a place not covered by the CCTV footage. The judge rejected the dance teacher's bail plea while considering the nature of the offence and the fact that he, being a teacher, assaulted the the bail plea, special public prosecutor Nitin Konghe argued that there is sufficient evidence against the accused to show his complicity in the crime, as he sexually assaulted four students below the age of 12. Konghe submitted that the investigating officer recovered the CCTV footage and seized the mobile phone of the accused. There was no delay in registering the first information report with the Warje Malwadi police, he lawyer Suchit Mundada pleaded for release of the accused on bail, claiming that he was wrongly implicated in the case and there was no evidence to suggest his involvement in the crime.
