COVID-19 update, 7 June 2025: India's active case count nears 6,000 with 391 new infections; Kerala, Delhi lead surge
Covid-19 Update, June 7: India's active cases of Covid-19 yet saw another increase over the past 24 hours, data from the Union Ministry of Health revealed on Saturday as the grip of the coronavirus continued to rise over the past few weeks. The number of active Covid-19 cases neared the 6,000 mark over the past 24 hours, data showed on Saturday. India's number of active Covid-19 cases has increased to 5,755 in the past day, the Covid dashboard of the health ministry revealed. India has reported 391 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, according to the data. This is a drop from the 498 cases that the country recorded on Friday. The number of Covid-19 patients who have been discharged over the past 24 hours were recorded at 760. This is a decrease from the 764 recoveries recorded on Friday. As many as four people died due to Covid-related issues over the past day, according to the data. The deaths were reported from Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. In Maharashtra, a pregnant 45-year-old woman died in the hospital after she started having intrapartum seizures after which she became intubated. She later tested Covid-19 positive. Another 59-year-old man in Kerala with lung cancer passed away. The two other patients who died were over 60 years of age and had comorbidities. Kerala recorded most number of Covid-19 cases on Saturday at 127, while one person died in the state. This was followed by Gujarat and Delhi. Gujarat recorded 183 new coronavirus positive cases on Saturday, taking the active count in the state to 822, the health department said. However, no death was reported in the past 24 hours. All the cases which are emerging in Gujarat are of JN.1, LF.7, LF.7.9 and XFG variants of the Omicron family, which causes mild fever and cough, the health department said. Maharashtra on Saturday reported 86 new cases, taking the total count since January to 1,362. Of these new cases, 31 were detected in Pune city and two in its rural parts and 28 tested positive in Mumbai, an official statement said. Uttarakhand recorded four new coronavirus positive cases on Saturday. Seven people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Dehradun on Friday, with the health department tracking down those who came in contact with them. Odisha Education Minister Nityananda Gond said the government is cautious about Covid-19 and that teachers should be trained to prevent Covid-19 infection when exposure to the virus cannot be avoided.

"Should also train teachers on how we can prevent COVID": Odisha Minister Nityananda Gond
Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], June 7 (ANI): Odisha Education Minister Nityananda Gond said the government is cautious about COVID-19 and that teachers should be trained to prevent COVID-19 infection when exposure to the virus cannot be avoided. Speaking to ANI on Friday, Minister Nityananda Gond said, '...We are cautious in this regard, and we will follow the instructions issued by the Government of India and the state government... We should also train teachers on how we can prevent COVID infection at a time when we cannot avoid exposure...' According to the Union Ministry of Health, there were 23 active COVID-19 cases in Odisha as of 8 AM on June 7. On Sunday, the number of active COVID-19 cases in the state was 12, according to the Director of Public Health, Government of Odisha, Dr Nilakantha Mishra. 'The number of cases is very low, and almost all patients diagnosed with COVID have mild symptoms. They are being treated in isolation in their own homes,' Dr Mishra told ANI. He further reassured the public, stating that the variants detected in the state are sublineages of Omicron, and there is no cause for concern at this point. 'There is nothing to worry about in Odisha. The variants that have been detected are also Omicron variants,' he added. As of June 7, 2025, at 8 AM, India reported 5364 active COVID-19 cases. Most cases are mild and managed under home care. Since January 1, 2025, 55 deaths have been reported, primarily among individuals with pre-existing illnesses. States have been instructed to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. In view of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in India, a series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 with various representatives under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS). According to a press release, the representatives include Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response (EMR) Cell, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and Central Government Hospitals in Delhi and with representatives from all States and UTs to evaluate the current COVID-19 situation and preparedness measures. Covid precautions to be followed in schools after vacation: Odisha SME minister
BHUBANESWAR: The School and Mass Education (SME) department is keeping a close watch on the Covid situation and will follow appropriate precautions as per the advisory of the Health and Family Welfare department, once the schools reopen. Informing this on Thursday, SME minister Nityananda Gond asked citizens to remain alert in view of the rising Covid-19 cases. 'The government is giving top priority to the health and safety of all,' he said, asking people not to panic. The minister further informed that teachers and students would be sensitised on Covid-19 and asked to properly follow precautionary measures, if any, issued by the Health Department. 'As students will go to schools and attend classes together, it is important for them to be careful about Covid. Those with cold symptoms may need to wear mask as a precautionary measure, while those with acute health issues may be advised to remain at home. We will strictly follow the guidelines of the Health department for the safety of students and teachers,' he said. SME officials said schools across the state will reopen after summer vacation ends on June 18. However, as more than 75 lakh students are expected to resume classes after the vacation, department officials said adequate precautionary measures need to be followed to ensure the students and teachers remain safe and education of the children is not hampered. The state has already started witnessing a gradual spike in new Covid cases this season. As per sources in the Health department, the Covid-19 tally has already jumped to 23 following detection of eight new cases on Monday and Tuesday. Keeping in view the increasing number of cases, the ICMR has also urged people with comorbidities and elderly persons to remain alert and follow Covid safety protocol.

Minister: Post summer vacation, schools to follow Covid norms
1 2 Bhubaneswar: In view of the rising Covid-19 cases, school and mass education minister Nityananda Gond said the state govt will enforce safety protocols in schools when they reopen later this month after the summer vacation. As many as 23 Covid cases have been recorded in Odisha in the last month (as of Wednesday). Gond said students and teachers need to remain cautious and alert. "All students and teachers will be asked to adhere to Covid-19 safety protocols when schools resume. The health and safety of the children is our top priority," Gond told media persons on Thursday. The school and mass education department will strictly follow the guidelines of the health department to ensure the safety of children. "Students and teachers will be asked to wear masks and those suffering from cold and cough or feeling unwell will be asked not to come to school. Teachers will be sensitised on Covid-19 protocols and safety guidelines," Gond said. The department will issue guidelines to all district education officers in the state soon to ensure strict adherence to hygiene protocols.

Odisha: 82.7 per cent of students clear Plus II, girls outdo boys in all streams
BHUBANESWAR : The Annual Higher Secondary Examination (AHSE) 2025 conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) has recorded an overall pass percentage of 82.77. The results were announced by School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond here on Wednesday. The overall pass percentage in the four streams of arts, science, commerce and vocational education this year has recorded a marginal decrease by 0.61 per cent (pc) over the previous year, in which a total 83.38 pc students had cleared the examination. Science stream recorded the highest pass percentage of 87.5, followed by commerce at 83.20, arts at 80.51 and vocational education 60.57. In 2024, the pass percentage was 86.93 for science, 82.27 for commerce, 80.95 for arts and 68.02 for vocational education. A total of 3.8 lakh students appeared for the examination this year. Girls, yet again, outperformed boys in all the streams.
