'No more Hubakusha! No more war!': Hiroshima survivor warns of rising nuclear threat
The Norwegian Nobel Committee and Nobel laureate Nihon Hidankyo, Japan's atomic bomb survivors' lobby group, warned that nuclear tensions were increasing around the world. "We stand now at the edge of a new and unstable nuclear age," said Nobel Committee chairman, Joergen Watne Frydnes, at the Nobel Peace Conference in Oslo, celebrating Nihon Hidankyo's work on Wednesday (6 August) on the 80th anniversary of the US atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Frydnes said that the nuclear taboo that the Hibakusha, Japan's atomic bomb survivors, helped establish, was under threat due to nuclear powers modernising arsenals, new nations seeking to obtain nuclear weapons, and the collapse of disarmament treaties.
