NPCL joins hands with TERI for study about efficient power use in Greater Noida
Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) has partnered with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) for an extensive study on electricity consumption patterns in Greater Noida, aiming to promote efficient and sustainable power use, officials said on Wednesday. Greater Noida's highest peak power demand to date—831.84 MW—was recorded on June 12, 2025. (HT Photos) The initiative, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on August 9, will focus on 'Load Research' and 'Demand Side Management' (DSM) to identify how and when power is used across consumer categories. NPCL supplies electricity to around 1.75 lakh consumers in Greater Noida. 'Greater Noida's power needs are growing rapidly, and managing this growth sustainably is a priority for us. The study with TERI will give us the granular data we need to design programmes that not only keep the grid stable but also help our consumers save money and reduce their environmental footprint,' said NPCL spokesperson Manoj Jha. To be sure, the study programme will finish in seven months. According to NPCL, the research will track usage from residential to commercial sectors. The findings will be used to shape DSM programmes encouraging consumers to reduce consumption during peak hours and shift demand to non-peak times, helping stabilise the grid, lower bills, and cut emissions. NPCL managing director and CEO PR Kumar said, 'By understanding the detailed consumption patterns of our consumers, we will be in a position to introduce innovative measures that promote conscious consumption. The collaboration with TERI is an important step towards ensuring that Greater Noida becomes an energy-smart city.' TERI director general Vibha Dhawan said the study would support Greater Noida's shift to cleaner, more efficient power systems. 'Our approach combines data-driven insights with practical strategies for implementation, ensuring benefits for both consumers and the environment,' she said. Potential DSM measures include incentives for energy-efficient appliances, integrating renewable energy into the grid, and encouraging behavioural changes among consumers. NPCL officials believe the model could be replicated in other cities as a blueprint for sustainable electricity management. The city's highest peak power demand to date—831.84 MW—was recorded on June 12, 2025. Officials said rising demand from urban expansion and industrial growth makes the study a timely intervention to manage load without overburdening infrastructure or relying heavily on fossil fuels.

Noida Residents Face Power Outage Amid Builder's Huge Unpaid Dues
NOIDA: More than 25,000 residents of Ecovillage 1 in Greater Noida West faced an eight-hour outage on Monday after Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) disconnected supply over pending dues of Rs 1.8 crore. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident comes barely days after the society witnessed violent clashes between residents and maintenance staff over a late-night power cut. The latest outage began at 9.30am, when supply was snapped to all 48 towers of the society. Supply was restored only at 5.30pm after the builder's maintenance team provided a written assurance to clear the dues. "Despite several reminders, the society failed to clear outstanding dues of around Rs 1.8 crore. Of this, Rs 1.3 crore was pending for over a year, while the remaining Rs 50 lakh was due since April 2023," an NPCL spokesperson told TOI. The situation was all the more difficult for residents of Tower A, mostly comprising 1BHK apartments whose owners hadn't opted for power backup due to high charges. "NPCL tried its level best to harass us. Despite written assurance of payment, supply wasn't restored till evening," said Ranjana Suri Bhardwaj, a resident of Tower C6. The power cut follows last Thursday's incident when residents clashed with guards over a nine-hour outage affecting seven towers. The confrontation turned ugly when maintenance staff and bouncers allegedly attacked residents, including women, who had gone to enquire about power restoration. Four maintenance staffers were arrested following the incident, which was captured on security cameras. "Power and water are basic rights of a homebuyer and should not be denied under any circumstances, be it by the builder or discom," Bhardwaj said. Work-from-home professionals, children, and elderly residents were severely affected in the humid weather. The police investigation into last week's clash continues, though no official report has been filed yet. Despite multiple attempts, the society's chief estate manager, Manu Tyagi, remained unavailable for comment. Four maintenance staffers were arrested. They were Ravindra (33), Sohit (30), Sachin Kuntal (27), and Vipin Kasana (27).
