Cardinals place slumping 3B Nolan Arenado (shoulder) on IL

August 2 - One day after the Cardinals couldn't find a taker for Nolan Arenado, St. Louis placed the veteran third baseman on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. Arenado had sought a deal prior to the season but he used his no-trade clause to prevent the team from trading him to the Houston Astros. This time around, he submitted a list of teams he would join, but St. Louis was unable to make a trade prior to Thursday's deadline. Arenado's sagging bat didn't help the cause as he has not homered since June 21 and batted just .175 with two RBIs in July. He has hit 30 or more home runs and driven in 100-plus runs seven times in his career. The 35-year-old Arenado currently has career lows in batting average (.235), on-base percentage (.294), slugging percentage (.366) and OPS (.660). He has 10 homers and 43 RBIs in 96 games. Arenado is an eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. He played his first eight seasons with the Colorado Rockies (2013-20) before forcing his way out of Denver and being traded to St. Louis. In a corresponding move, the Cardinals activated infielder Nolan Gorman (back) from the 10-day injury list. Gorman is batting sixth and playing third base in Friday night's road game against the San Diego Padres. Gorman, 25, is batting .219 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 66 games with St. Louis. St. Louis also recalled right-handers Ryan Fernandez, Andre Granillo and Roddery Munoz from Triple-A Memphis to fill roster openings stemming from the trades of right-handers Ryan Helsley and Phil Maton and left-hander Steven Matz over the previous two days. Fernandez, 27, is 0-2 with an 11.42 ERA in 11 appearances with the Cardinals this season. Granillo, 25, is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA in eight appearances and Munoz, 25, has an 8.10 ERA in six appearances. --Field Level Media

Cardinals to place Nolan Arenado on 10-day IL with shoulder injury: Sources

SAN DIEGO — The St. Louis Cardinals will place third baseman Nolan Arenado on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder injury before Friday's game against the San Diego Padres, team sources told The Athletic. Arenado's shoulder issues date to early July. He missed a handful of games trying to avoid the IL and was hopeful rest over the All-Star break would alleviate the discomfort. Advertisement Instead, he struggled mightily. Over the last 12 games, Arenado hit just .159/.213/.205 with only two extra-base hits and one RBI. Arenado's offensive decline has been a talking point all season. The 10-time Gold Glove Award winner has continued to play an excellent third base, but his season OPS dropped to .660 and he has not homered since June 21. There is no immediate timetable for his return. Nolan Gorman (back spasms) will come off the 10-day IL as the corresponding move and will see the bulk of starts at third base. Gorman began a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday and homered in Wednesday's game. BANG! He missed the final two weeks of the 2023 season with back soreness, though the Cardinals were well out of contention and on course to finish 20 games under .500. The Cardinals are also recalling Ryan Fernandez, Roddery Muñoz and Andre Granillo from Triple-A Memphis. St. Louis needs to replenish its bullpen after trading away its top three relievers in Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton and Steven Matz at the trade deadline. Fernandez struggled with the big league club in April, posting an 11.42 ERA over 11 appearances before being demoted to Memphis. However, he's been much more effective since, with a 3.12 ERA in 29 appearances and a 12.72 K/9 ratio. Granillo was optioned to Memphis on Monday, but is eligible to be recalled because a roster spot opened via trade. The Cardinals are still deciding who will take over the closer role, but president of baseball operations John Mozeliak indicated Thursday left-hander JoJo Romero was the top candidate. Right-handers Riley O'Brien and Kyle Leahy should see their usage expand to set-up roles as well. (Photo of Arenado: Dustin Bradford / Getty Images)

Cardinals give promising injury update on Nolan Gorman

As the St. Louis Cardinals keep their name relevant in MLB trade talks while they try to stay relevant in the NL Wild Card picture, some positive injury news was provided on Monday. Since being placed on the injured list earlier this month after discovering lower back pain, it has been announced that second baseman Nolan Gorman will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday. Gorman's back injury has raised concerns for the Cardinals, as he's experienced the same issue in 2023, resulting in an injured-list stint. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol spoke about the recurring injury to Nolan Gorman's back earlier this month, as something like this can be a problem for the second baseman at just 25 years old. "I've had to answer that question every year he's been with us. It flares up every year at some point, and it's just part of it," Marmol told Michael Reynolds. Although he was healthy all of the 2024 season, Gorman's never played more than 119 games in a season since entering the league in 2022 and has been placed on the injured list four times in the past three years. Gorman's most productive season came in 2023 when he led the Cardinals in home runs. He had career highs in batting average (.236), on-base percentage (328), slugging percentage (.478), and OPS (.805) that season while hitting 27 home runs and 76 RBI. Through 66 games in 2025, Gorman has a .219 batting average, .310 on-base percentage, .431 slugging percentage, and .719 OPS, hitting nine home runs and 29 RBI.
