Melrose fire now 481 acres, 30% contained
POLK COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA)- A wildfire which sparked Saturday in Polk County has been 30% contained as of Monday morning, according to fire officials.
The North Carolina Forestry Service and Polk County Emergency Management reports the Melrose Fire is up to 481 acres in size with 30% contained.
The fire is now larger than the 431-acre wildfire which ignited in nearby Henderson County in 2023.
Firefighting crews will be starting back burn operations soon and working to reinforce existing fire lines. Crews are continuing to protect homes in the area from the fire.
A burn ban remains in effect for Polk and McDowell counties as of Monday morning.
