Escaped fugitive arrested in Lee County after two-hour crisis negotiation

A wanted fugitive who escaped jail more than a week ago has been found in North Fort Myers. Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies found Jamie Jenks, 33, of North Fort Myers, Monday morning, August 11. He had escaped a St. Petersburg correctional facility on August 3. Jenks barricaded himself in an apartment on the 1330 block of Lavin Lane, where crisis negotiators and the LCSO Special Operations Unit worked for two hours to ensure the situation ended safely, deputies said. Jenks surrendered peacefully, they said. Deputies said Jenks has an extensive criminal history, with multiple arrests ranging in charges from fraud to felony larceny. At the time of his escape, he was serving a two-year sentence for theft. This is an ongoing investigation. North Fort Myers pizza joint suddenly closes for second time in a year

Grandma Penny's is suddenly closing its doors again. The North Fort Myers pizza and pasta restaurant made the announcement via Facebook late Thursday, July 31. 'This is a tough post to write,' it read. 'After facing challenges from all sides from road closures and limited access last year to another slow summer season we've made the difficult decision to close Grandma Penny's.' Saturday, Aug. 2, will be the final day. Carole Dean, her husband DJ and his mother Terri first opened their friendly neighborhood gathering spot at 4353 Hancock Bridge Parkway in November 2020. A loyal fan base found them and stood by despite opening during the pandemic and followed by hurricanes, construction challenges and more. 'We considered going quietly, because this has been such a hard and emotional decision, and we never wanted to let anyone down,' the post continued. 'But we value you all too much to not be open and honest about what's happening. You've been such an important part of this journey.' Grandma Penny's briefly closed last year This is the second time Grandma Penny's has closed in a year. Last July, it shut its doors citing the desire to spend more time with family, 'overhead, inflation, the (Caloosahatchee) Bridge closing and finding employees' as the main reasons. Six weeks later, Grandma Penny's reopened. 'Every day we were closed, I had someone reaching out — especially through Facebook — saying how much they had loved it or wished we would reopen,' Carole said last September. 'I live close by and would always see regulars at Publix. They motivated me even more. I felt the love from the community.' And although they reopened once, 'the truth is that it's just not something we can continue to sustain right now,' the latest post read. Will there be another return, possibly? A future return was addressed, too. 'We know many of you may have questions about the future, and the honest answer is that we're not entirely sure what comes next,' it read. 'Right now, we're focusing on taking care of ourselves and stepping back to breathe, process, and rest.' As they did after last year's closing, the family made sure to acknowledge their customers. 'What we do know is how incredibly grateful we are for every single person who supported us, whether you visited once or came in every week,' the post concluded. 'Your kindness and encouragement meant more than we can ever express.' Robyn George is a food and dining reporter for The News-Press.
