Deadly multi-vehicle crash shuts down North Miami Beach street, knocks power nearby

Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that unfolded early Friday in a North Miami Beach neighborhood, leaving behind a trail of wreckage and power outages. The crash happened near the intersection of Northeast 16th Avenue and Northeast 152nd Street, where multiple vehicles appear to be involved. One car, virtually destroyed, showed the brunt of the impact. A tarp covered the body of a victim lying next to one of the mangled vehicles. The person's identity has not been released. CBS News Miami's Morgan Rynor, reporting from the scene, said the crash spans about a block. On one end, a white car with a smashed front end sits at the far side of the block. On the other end, several other vehicles appear tangled together near a group of police cruisers. A tire could also be seen lying on the sidewalk, further indicating the force of the collision. Drone video from above showed the full extent of the wreckage, with at least four vehicles believed to be involved. Florida Power and Light reported about 150 customers are without electricity in the area. It's not yet clear whether the outages are directly connected to the crash. The road remains blocked off as the investigation continued. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

QDOBA restaurant expands with 800th location in Florida

Mexican restaurant franchise QDOBA has continued its growth trajectory with the opening of its 800th restaurant in North Miami Beach in the US state of Florida. The new location at 14583 Biscayne Blvd is part of the company's plan to extend its presence to 1,600 restaurants by 2032. The brand has more than 500 future restaurants in its development pipeline, focusing on expansion in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. QDOBA's growth strategy includes traditional venues and non-traditional locations such as universities, airports and military bases. Operating across 45 states, it offers a diverse menu with in-house prepared ingredients. Customers can customise bowls, burritos, quesadillas, tacos, nachos and salads with toppings such as three-cheese queso and guacamole without extra charge. QDOBA CEO John Cywinski stated: "With 2025 included, we've averaged double-digit system sales growth over the past five years. "QDOBA is a powerful brand with big-time momentum and an unbelievably bright future. It's not surprising we continue to attract some of the best franchise partners from QSR and casual dining as they seek to diversify into the most attractive category in the restaurant industry." Founded in Colorado in 1995 as Zuma Fresh Mexican Grill, the brand celebrated the opening of its 200th restaurant in 2005 and was renamed QDOBA Mexican Eats in 2015. In August 2022, Butterfly Equity agreed with funds managed by affiliates of Apollo to acquire the chain and merge it with fast-casual restaurant platform, Modern Restaurant Concepts. QDOBA chief development officer Jeremy Vitaro stated: "Over the past two years, QDOBA has welcomed nearly 20 new franchise partners, expanding our portfolio of high-quality, proven multi-brand restaurant operators from across the industry.' In March 2025, QDOBA committed to opening 33 new franchise locations across the US. Man accused of harassing students at private Jewish school in North Miami Beach, police say

A man was arrested for allegedly harassing students at a private Jewish school in North Miami Beach. According to police, on Monday, May 5, surveillance cameras captured 24-year-old Jose Garrido walking on the sidewalk adjacent to Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes just before 11:30 a.m. In the video, police said Garrido bent down, picked something up off the ground and threw it at the school's field where students were playing. He then left the area only to return minutes later wearing black gloves and what appeared to be a whip in his hands, according to the arrest report. As he again passed the field, police said he said something to two students which they didn't understand, according to police. Garrido then allegedly attempted to grab the kippah, a religious garment worn by people of the Jewish faith, off one the student's head. According the arrest report, he then "stopped (and) turned his body towards both victims and appeared to take an aggressive stance continuing to harass both victims with the whip in his hands." The students immediately walked away and found a school security guard and told him what happened. The guard spotted Garrido as he walked back towards the school with the whip and a wooden stick in his hands, according to police. The guard then took a picture of him which police would later use to identify him. On Thursday, police went to Garrido residence on NW 118 Street where they took him into custody. During a search, police said they found a small blue plastic baggie of what they suspect is cocaine in his front right pocket. Garrido was arrested and has been charged with harassment or intimidation based on religion or ethnic heritage and possession of cocaine.
