2 killed in hit-and-run near Armstrong, B.C., police seeking witnesses

B.C. RCMP vehicles are seen stopped beside Highway 97A in a handout image. Authorities are asking witnesses to come forward following a hit-and-run in B.C.'s North Okanagan that left two men dead over the weekend. The head-on collision happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday on Highway 97A near Armstrong, and involved two pickup trucks – a black GMC Sierra and a tan Chevrolet. Two of the passengers in the Chevrolet, identified as a 19-year-old from Vernon and a 20-year-old from Coldstream, were killed. After the crash, the Sierra driver and a passenger 'left the scene on foot without identifying themselves to witnesses or police,' B.C. Highway Patrol said in a news release Monday. Officers arrested a suspect driver later that day. Authorities have already spoken with some witnesses, but are hoping to speak to more as they work to understand 'exactly how the tragedy unfolded,' BCHP said. 'Witness reports say that a 2009 GMC Sierra with lifted suspension and a tidy tank in the bed was driving the wrong way on the divided highway prior to the fatal collision,' said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, in a statement. 'There may be people who had a near-miss with the black GMC Sierra who have not yet spoken to police. We need to speak to those people, and dash-camera video would be very useful.' Authorities have not released the suspect driver's name, but said he is a 30-year-old Armstrong resident.

15-year-old stabbed at B.C. grad party: RCMP

Mounties are investigating after a 15-year-old was reportedly stabbed during a large grad party in Coldstream, B.C., over the weekend. The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP says it received the report around 1 a.m. Sunday, and when officers arrived at the property on Mackie Drive, the teenage victim had already been taken to hospital for treatment. The suspect drove away before police arrived, but the 18-year-old was found and arrested shortly later 'without incident,' according to the detachment. The accused was released with conditions and a court date. 'From the investigation, the incident is believed to have started out as an argument between the suspect and victim,' Mounties wrote in a news release Tuesday. 'It then escalated into a physical confrontation which led to the suspect allegedly stabbing the victim, who was seriously injured as a result.' Police asked anyone who witnessed the incident to call the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP's non-emergency line at 250-545-7171.

Remains found in B.C. identified as woman who went missing in 2017

Social Sharing Mounties in British Columbia's Interior say human remains found last month have been confirmed as being a woman who went missing near Sicamous nearly eight years ago. They say the remains were discovered on a rural property in Salmon Arm on May 5, and the B.C. Coroners Service has since linked them to Nicole Bell. She was 31 when she disappeared in September 2017, and major crime investigators who took conduct of the case quickly confirmed the woman's disappearance "was the result of foul play." She was one of five women who went missing in the North Okanagan over a 20-month period in 2016 and 2017, but police say it has been established that the disappearances were not all associated to the same person. But the RCMP news release says investigators believe the person responsible for Bell's death is the primary suspect in the killing of at least one other victim, but that man is dead. Eighteen-year-old Traci Genereaux was reported missing on June 9, 2017, and her remains were found when police executed a search warrant on Curtis Sagmoen's family farm in Salmon Arm in October that year. Police do not name Sagmoen in the news release, but say they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public as the primary suspect is dead. Sagmoen was reported dead in a Vernon hotel in April this year. The release says the Southeast District Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate the deaths of both women as "additional parties to the offence have not yet been ruled out."
