Heartbroken family, friends hold balloon release for man killed in Fairmount Park shooting
The Brief It was a solemn evening in North Philadelphia as friends, family and community members released balloons Friday evening honoring one of the victims of Monday's deadly shooting. 21-year-old Mikhail Bowers, loved by many in his Philly community, was remembered as a young father whose life was tragically cut short. NORTH PHILADELPHIA - A young father was honored and remembered Friday night as family, friends and his community gathered to release balloons following his tragic death in the Fairmount Park deadly Memorial Day shooting. A family's grief "This is where he came up. He would've loved to be right here," James Hargrove, Mikhail's grandfather, said. Hargrove said Bowers would have loved being among his friends, family and neighbors at 30th and Norris, where he grew up. Hargrove is hoping those who survived the shooting and saw the shooters will help investigators learn who shot and killed Mikhail and 23-year-old Amya Devlin and wounded nine others on Lemon Hill Monday night. "Whoever is listening, it's not about the money, the reward. Bring some justice for him, because you don't need people on the street like that, shooting in the crowd. There could be babies and all that, you know what I mean? I'm hurting, but I can't cry. I've been crying too much," Hargrove remarked. What they're saying Mikhail's family was overwhelmed to see they have an even bigger family, showing up to honor the 21-year-old father of two. With red and black balloons and others spelling out his name, gathering on the playground Mikhail spent so much time on as a child. His grandmother, Wanda Bowers, said, "It's good everyone's coming up to me, telling me how much my grandson was loved around here. You see it on the news, but you never think it will hit home but it did. They need to stop with the gun violence. I don't really know what to say, Steve. They just need to stop with the gun violence." Heartbreaking loss People of all ages turned out to honor Mikhail and all were trying to make sense of the senseless. Mikhail's aunt, Valerie Matthews, said, "Keep in mind, he was lost. He was taken away for no reason at all. He was a good guy. He was a sweetheart, he loved to hug." "I'm gonna miss my cousin and I just hope that the gun violence in Philadelphia will stop for once," Averi Warren, Mikhail's cousin, said.

Temple credits new crime fighting tool in arrest of suspect wanted in several states
The Brief An arrest has been made in a multi-state investigation, as a 20-year-old man, wanted for several burglaries is caught. The arrest is thanks to new license plate reading technology and is proof the technology is going to be a game-changer in fighting crime. NORTH PHILADELPHIA - Temple University's security team is crediting a new crime-fighting tool with leading to an arrest of a suspect wanted in several states. How it works A small solar panel sits above a camera tethered to a pole at Temple University. It's one of nearly 1,500 security cameras eyeing the North Philly campus. Temple said these cameras, part of the Flock Safety system, have a long reach. Jennifer Griffin is the Temple University Chief of Police. She said, "If you flag a vehicle registration in the system, when it hits on the camera, the system sends multiple alerts to investigators, police dispatch and other people." Timeline Temple reports that's how its officers were able to collar 20-year-old Jahid Robinson on campus back in December. New Castle County, Delaware police had linked Robinson, of Delaware County, Pa., to a series of burglaries - where residents were home - in the Greenville section of Wilmington. Master Corporal Richard Chambers is with the New Castle County Police Department. He said, "He was going into people's occupied homes. He was going into houses taking property and car keys, going into driveways, ransacking cars, taking property." Wanted in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, New Castle police entered his plate into the Flock system and received a hit on a vehicle near the 1000 block of Diamond Street on campus. Temple police were alerted, and Robinson was arrested. Big picture view Temple called reporters to campus Friday to trumpet the arrest and highlight the success of this computer-powered security system whose cameras FOX 29 spotted in several locations. On hand, U.S. Representative Brendon Boyle is credited with winning Justice Department funding for Flock. Boyle said, "To come full circle and be here today to see the fruits of that labor actually lead to an arrest is incredibly exciting."

Memorial Day mass shooting in Philadelphia leaves 2 dead, 9 injured
A mass shooting in North Philadelphia on Monday night has left two dead and nine others injured, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel. The shooting near Fairmont Park happened around 10:27 p.m. police say, and there were multiple groups of people at the park when the gunshots were fired. One adult male and one adult female were pronounced dead at the scene. Bethel says that among those injured are a 15, 16, and 17-year-old and the rest of the victims are adults. The victims have not been identified at this time. The investigation is expected to go into the morning as the crime scene is large, according to the authorities. Due to the size of the event, Bethel said, "it becomes even a greater challenge to identify who's out there. Who may be engaged in negative behavior." "When individuals decide that they're going to fire into a crowd, that's something that we can't anticipate. But we do work hard to try to address the issues as they come up and we become aware," he said. Police do not know how many were involved but stated that they heard multiple rounds from content that had been posted on social media. No weapons have been recovered at this time and the police do not have any suspects in custody. Bethel says he expected to pick up a lot of information as the day unfolds, and that updates will be provided at that time. "We'll probably have some updates tomorrow morning once we get the scene resolved, and we'll give you an update then whether we do it in person or send out something in writing," he reassured the public at a press conference. "It's memorial's day, a day where we honor those who give their lives in war, and so we understand the significance of this event, and so we'll make sure we provide an update." Philadelphia police are still at the scene investigating.

Family of hit-and-run victim urges suspect to come forward: 'Turn yourself in'
The Brief Nafeece Acquil Jenkins, 32, was fatally struck by a driver who fled the scene in North Philadelphia early Sunday morning. The victim's loved ones came together for a balloon release in West Philadelphia Monday. PHILADELPHIA - The community of West Philadelphia is mourning the tragic loss of 32-year-old Nafeece Jenkins, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident over the holiday weekend. Friends, family, and neighbors gathered to honor his memory and call for justice. What we know Nafeece Jenkins was struck by a speeding driver around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday while crossing Lehigh Avenue between 12th and 13th streets. Police later discovered the abandoned white Honda involved in the accident at a lot on 12th and Park Avenue, but the driver remains at large. What they're saying Sharon Carter, Jenkins' mother, expressed her grief and urged people to remember her son as a loving father who had turned his life around. "It's hard, it's really hard," she said. "He was bright, loving, kind. The spirit that he had brought love, as you see." Eileen Jenkins, his grandmother, shared fond memories of Jenkins. "Just remember his smile, his joy, his love for life, love for people. He was a great child, he was very good. I love him, and they all do too, as you can see," she said. Family members are pleading for the driver to come forward. "I know you're living with the guilt right now that you hit somebody, so the best thing to do right now is just turn yourself in because you're really living with the fact that you killed somebody," said Nafis Horne, Jenkins' cousin. "God is watching, so the best thing to do is turn yourself in." Nazir Allford, Jenkins' brother, echoed this sentiment: "My advice would just be do the right thing, find it in your heart to do the right thing." What's next The family and community are hoping for justice and urging anyone with information about the case to contact Philadelphia police immediately. As they continue to grieve, they remain hopeful that the person responsible will come forward.
