Edmonton weather: Sunny breaks and breezy; gusty and increasing smoke Saturday

(Cam Wiebe / CTV News Edmonton) Mostly cloudy with a few scattered light showers in the Edmonton region early this morning. We'll get some sunny breaks later in the morning and through the afternoon. Temperatures stayed in the teens through the overnight and we'll get into the low 20s this afternoon. Wind is expected to pick up through the day with gusts around 40 km/h midday and this afternoon. Breezy conditions continue tonight and then the wind picks up even more for Saturday. Northwesterlies at 30 km/h gusting to around 50 km/h will draw some wildfire smoke into the Edmonton area by Saturday afternoon. Based on smoke modelling, we're probably looking at Air Quality Health Index readings in the moderate to high risk range for late Saturday. With the wind easing for Sunday, that smoke could linger over the Edmonton region right through the weekend. The smoke forecast for Monday is less certain. We'll be around 20 C for a high on Saturday, then jumping into the mid 20s for Sunday-Tuesday. No significant precipitation expected for the Edmonton area this weekend and early next week. Breezy. 9pm: 20 Saturday - Partly cloudy. Windy. NW 30 gusting to 50 km/h. Increasing wildfire smoke through the day. Air Quality Health Index - Low Risk in the morning, then Moderate to High Risk range in the afternoon and evening. Morning Low: 11 Afternoon High: 21 Sunday - Sunny & hazy due to wildfire smoke. Light wind. Air Quality Health Index in the Moderate to High Risk range through the day. Morning Low: 10 Afternoon High: 24 Monday - Mainly sunny. Morning Low: 14 Afternoon High: 26 Tuesday - Partly cloudy. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 25 Wednesday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of late-day showers. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 23

Edmonton weather: Low to mid 20s through the weekend

(Cam Wiebe / CTV News Edmonton) Edmonton cracked into the 20s on Wednesday after starting June with three straight days of highs in the mid to upper teens. Looks like afternoon highs will stay in the 20s through to the middle of next week, with a high near 25 C today and then a bit of a 'step back' Friday/Saturday. Sunny skies with a bit of thin, high-level haze in the Edmonton region today. Air Quality Health Index readings will be in the low risk range today and we're not anticipating much for wildfire smoke in the area Friday. That could change on Saturday as the flow becomes more northwesterly. There's a ripple of cooler air in the upper level flow that goes through northern Alberta Friday/early Saturday. We get a chance of some showers in the Edmonton region overnight tonight and possibly a scattered shower Friday (timing uncertain). Temperatures will top out in the low 20s Friday/Saturday and wind will pick up. Looks like we'll have NW 20 km/h wind gusting to 40 km/h Friday afternoon and then 30km/h gusting to 50 km/h for much of Saturday. and heating up for Sunday and early next week as daytime highs jump into the mid to upper 20s. Elsewhere around the province: A good chance of showers and gusty conditions in northwestern Alberta this afternoon and evening. That rain moves through northeastern Alberta overnight and early Friday. Gusts in the 40 km/h to 60 km/h range across northern Alberta on Friday. showers in the High Level to Fort McMurray region Friday afternoon. Showers are also possible around Fort McMurray Saturday morning. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Sunny with some late-afternoon clouds. High: 25 Tonight - Mostly cloudy. 30% chance of a shower overnight. 9pm: 20 Friday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of a scattered shower. Wind becoming NW 20 gusting to 40 km/h through the afternoon. Morning Low: 14 Afternoon High: 22 Saturday - Partly cloudy. Windy. NW 30 gusting to 50 km/h.
