Two arrested for allegedly shooting couple in Rustenburg shopping centre parking lot

Two people have been taken into custody for the murder of a couple in Rustenburg. The couple was shot dead in a shopping mall parking lot over the weekend. Police also recovered a vehicle and a firearm. Two people have been arrested in connection with the murders of a couple at a shopping mall in Rustenburg, Gauteng, on Saturday afternoon. The 29-year-old and 41-year-old suspects were arrested in connection with the murders on Wednesday. North West police commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, said police also recovered a vehicle and firearm during the arrests. 'The arrest of the two suspects is a result of excellent Crime Intelligence work in identifying, locating and tracking the vehicle that was used to flee from the crime scene. The vehicle was traced, found and seized at Ndamoyi, Boitekong,' said Asaneng. After questioning, one of them conceded that he was driving the vehicle and he said his friend had shot the couple, Asaneng said. 'The police, upon arrival, found the second person who showed them a pistol. The suspect was immediately placed under arrest, and the firearm seized,' said Asaneng. The suspects are expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday. 'These swift arrests should send a strong message to those who commit crime that the police in the province will relentlessly track them down and that they will have no place to hide,' said Asaneng. News24 previously reported that police in Rustenburg had launched a search operation after the couple was brutally killed in a parking lot at a shopping centre on Saturday. Preliminary reports indicated the couple was killed following a heated altercation with the occupants of a white Kia Rio that had no number plates. Police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh, said paramedics declared both victims dead at the scene. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined.

Social worker told toddler was asleep on visit in weeks before death, court hears

Two-year-old Ethan Ives-Griffiths died in hospital on August 16 2021, two days after an ambulance was called to the North Wales home of his grandparents Kerry Ives, 46, and Michael Ives, 47, where he was living along with his mother Shannon Ives, 28. A trial at Mold Crown Court has heard Ethan suffered 'catastrophic head injuries' and was severely underweight when he died. Social worker Michael Cornish, from Flintshire County Council, said he first visited Shannon Ives on July 22 2021 at her parents' home in Garden City in Deeside, Flintshire. The court heard the mother moved back in with her parents after she 'fled' her home in Mold due to domestic violence. Ethan Ives-Griffiths (North West Police/PA) Mr Cornish said Ethan was on the child protection register, which meant he had to be seen every 10 days. He said on his first visit he saw Ethan in the back garden of the property and described him as 'a small two-year-old boy who was quite shy'. He said Michael Ives, who stood with his daughter as he spoke to her, said words to the effect of: 'He's the quiet one, he doesn't say anything.' Mr Cornish told the court he contacted Shannon Ives to arrange another visit on August 5 but, following a conversation about isolating due to Covid, he only saw her on the doorstep and was told Ethan and one of his siblings were 'having a nap'. The court heard his visit lasted almost 45 minutes. Mr Cornish said: 'During the visit I asked to see the children again but they were still asleep.' He said it was either Shannon Ives or her mother Kerry Ives who told him Ethan was asleep. He added: 'This was a time when it was Covid. 'It was very difficult, we had to be very careful with entering properties. 'For whatever reason I accepted those children were still asleep.' On August 12 he said he arranged with health visitor Ellie Jones to go to the house for another visit but there was no answer at the door. He tried to phone Shannon Ives the following day but there was no answer, the court heard. Mr Cornish said he then went on leave, but emailed his manager to provide an update on the case and to say somebody needed to see the children. Michael and Kerry Ives, of Kingsley Road, Garden City, deny murder, an alternative count of causing or allowing the death of a child and cruelty to a person under 16. Shannon Ives, of Nant Garmon, Mold, denies causing or allowing the death of a child and cruelty to a person under 16. The trial will continue on Thursday.

Mass burial of unclaimed bodies of Stilfontein illegal miners begins

The families are from Mozambique, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, he said. However, as of Tuesday, 30 bodies that have not been claimed would be buried, said Lekgethwane. 'There are 53 bodies at [a] Klerksdorp mortuary [who are] unclaimed. We bury them as unclaimed people,' he said. Lekgethwane said the remaining 23 will be buried by the end of June or the beginning of July. It is expected that all the bodies would be buried by the end of July. Mothibedi said they were working with local municipalities and that the bodies would either be buried in Rustenburg or Madibeng. North West police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said families were still allowed to come forward for DNA samples but not for identification of the bodies. ' We will do a comparison of the DNA samples but because of the decomposition of the bodies, it is going to be difficult to allow anyone to identify them,' he said. 'Their graves will be marked so that if anyone comes forward and they are positively linked, then we know where to find their bodies. The process will not stop.' Since the police's Operation Vala Umgodi, 1,826 illegal miners have been arrested at the old Buffelsfontein gold mine in Stilfontein. Of these, 1,128 are from Mozambique, 473 from Zimbabwe, 197 from Lesotho, 26 from South Africa, and one each from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Malawi. SowetanLIVE
