Major incident declared by crews dealing with North York Moors fire
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have declared that a fire in the North York Moors national park is now classed as a major incident, as crews work to bring the blaze under control. Twenty appliances have now been sent to the scene on Langdale Moor, near the ballistic missile early warning base at RAF Fylingdales, North Yorkshire Fire Service said. "The fire has now spread and is covering around 5 sq km," the fire service said in its latest update at on Wednesday, 13 August. "More resources are being sent to the scene. This has now been declared a major incident." Fire crews were first called around 6.30pm on Monday, 11 August to reports of smoke and people were asked to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed. Fire crews have been sent from various stations including Helmsley and Bedale. North Yorkshire Moors Railway issued update on steam train services following hot weather and moor fires. A spokesperson said: "Due to the prolonged hot weather and recent fires elsewhere in the county which have meant firefighting resources have been more stretched, we've taken the decision to delay the start of the special No. 60163 'Tornado' services set to run on 15th, 16th and 17th August. "We are reviewing all current 'Tornado' services and hope to have an update on the revised start date once temperatures have cooled down. "In addition, we've switched all of our Pickering to Grosmont standard services to heritage diesel locomotives, and we still aim to run steam-hauled services between Grosmont and Whitby due to the lower fire risk profile. "The NYMR is doing everything it can to fully cooperate with and support the emergency services, taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our staff, volunteers and passengers, which is always our priority.
