Ramos chosen as Republican candidate for Sunbury council secondary election
SUNBURY — The Northumberland County Republican committee named Andrew Ramos as the candidate to face Victoria Rosancrans in the secondary election for Sunbury City Council in November.
According to party leaders, Ramos, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for mayor in May, was chosen as the candidate over current Councilman John Barnhart, who also lost his reelection bid in May.
Northumberland County Democratic Committee Chairperson John J. Merchlinsky III announced the Democratic committee chose Rosancrans as their candidate about a month ago.
The seat became open when former Councilwoman Lisa Martina resigned to become city treasurer.
The secondary election was needed after Martina ran for and won the Republican nomination for city treasurer in May. She is unopposed for the November General Election. She was appointed to fill the vacancy left when former Treasurer Kevin Troup retired to pursue a seat on city council. She stepped down from city council after she was appointed treasurer.
Troup, current Councilman Nate Savidge and Andres Manresa all advanced out of the primary and will compete for two four-year seats on council.
The secondary election was announced by the Northumberland County Elections Office last month.
Ramos, Rosancrans, Manresa, Troup and James Brumbach are set to appear before council Monday as each seek to be appointed to the board until January when the individual who wins the secondary election will take office.
Council voted 2-2 on Ramos and Rosancrans and then petitioned the court to fill the seat. President Judge Paige Rosini sent the petition back to council and ordered them to try to fill it a second time on their own.
Ramos said he was honored to get the nomination.
'I am thankful to the Northumberland County Republican committee for the opportunity to present myself and for their support in selecting me as the nominee,' he said. 'I look forward to getting out in the community and listening to residents and earning the trust and vote of the people of Sunbury. I'm committed to revitalizing our city, growing our local economy and working with others to move Sunbury forward.'
