Norwegian Cruise Line shares fall on potential softness
The Norwegian Pearl cruise ship anchored off shore on January 07, 2022 in Miami Beach, Florida. 'It was actually booking really, really well till about a month or two ago. And then the American consumer seemed to be a little skittish about doing far-from-home travel,' CEO Harry Sommer told CNBC Wednesday. For instance, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings reports some 'choppiness' in cruises booked to Europe from the United States in the third quarter. The cruise industry is on the lookout for rough seas ahead when it comes to consumer confidence and travel budgets. Norwegian shares declined more than 7% Wednesday following its first-quarter earnings report. Revenue for the first quarter came in just shy of expectations at $2.13 billion versus estimates of $2.15 billion, according to average estimates compiled by LSEG, and earnings per share were 7 cents adjusted versus a 9 cents expectation. The company modified its guidance on net yield growth by a percent to a range of 2% to 3% and said its revenues will likely be pressured this year. But Norwegian maintained its guidance on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, and adjusted earnings per share, projecting cost savings through more favorable foreign currency rates and lower fuel prices. Despite the pressures, Sommer reiterated the cruise industry's widely held view that travelers increasingly look to cruises during economic turmoil because of the value of those vacations over land-based holidays. Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty said on the company's first-quarter earnings call Tuesday that the company is 'certainly not immune to macro volatility.' 'But what we're seeing on the ground, in our bookings and the real-time spending occurring on our ships is that consumers are still prioritizing experiences, planning to spend more on them this year and are seeking value that we are well positioned to offer,' Liberty said. The company said it's 86% booked through the end of 2025. Royal Caribbean raised its full-year guidance and reported results that beat Wall Street expectations. But its shares also fell Wednesday and are off about 6% year to date. Norwegian shares are off 37% year to date and Carnival Cruise Lines is down 26% so far this year, in spite of record-breaking first-quarter results, announced in March, that surpassed the company's own guidance. Norwegian said on-board spending remained steady in April and it's seen some 'return to normalcy.' 'You know, you may have a weak month, a weak quarter, but consumers continue to take vacations,' Sommer said. 'It's sort of one of their God-given rights and they enjoy them. And they come back.'

Royal Caribbean passenger apparently jumps overboard
Cruise-ship passengers rarely go overboard. Railings have been engineered so going over them accidentally has become incredibly unlikely. People who fall off generally have had too much to drink, are doing something very stupid, or go overboard matter why someone goes overboard, however, all efforts are made to rescue the passenger. That includes getting help from any nearby ships. The result when someone goes overboard, however, tends to be the same. Successful rescues are very rare. "There were 212 recorded instances of passengers going overboard between 2009 and 2019, or roughly 21 times per year," according to data from the Cruise Lines International Association. "Of those, 48 people were successfully rescued. The report said that after investigations, each case was found to be caused by an intentional or reckless act."This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Tuesday, March 4. A passenger went overboard from Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas during its '80s-themed cruise to the Bahamas. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on the first night of the voyage. Social media reports suggest a woman may have jumped from Deck 8 with her husband seen calling for help. Crew members initiated a search, turning the ship around, while other cruise ships in the vicinity, like Norwegian Pearl and Carnival Sunrise, also assisted in the search. At the time of broadcast, there has been no official statement from Royal Caribbean, and the passenger has yet to be found. The ship continued its itinerary, arriving in Nassau as scheduled. . A cruise passenger was arrested in Aruba after attempting to board Oasis of the Seas with a revolver. The firearm was discovered during a routine security screening last week on the island. Local police detained the unidentified man, and authorities are investigating whether he brought the weapon on board in Florida or obtained it in Aruba. Firearms are strictly prohibited on Royal Caribbean ships, as is the case on any ship, and it's illegal to bring into port without special permits. The ship continued its itinerary without disruption. This is the second Royal Caribbean guest to get caught with a firearm on board following a similar incident last spring in Grand Turk. The mayor of Nice, France, has reversed its decision to ban large cruise ships following opposition from local businesses. Instead, he plans to submit a compromise proposal to the Port Authority this week. Under the new plan, cruise ships with up to 2,500 passengers will be allowed to anchor, but only one ship per day. Smaller vessels under 450 passengers can still dock in Nice. The Port Authority says it would allow 65 of the 90 scheduled cruise ships to continue their itineraries this summer. Environmental groups who initially supported the ban criticized the reversal, arguing it prioritizes the economy over ecological concerns. No timeline has been set for implementing the new rules. If you have a lead on a story, let us know. Tips@ Here aboard the Celestial Journey docked in Dubai. Just got back from the Burj Khalifa, one of the, I guess, the tallest building in the world.
