Noxious weeds in Mesa County
MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – Noxious weeds are plants that can harm other plants, humans, livestock and outcompete native species. These weeds can quickly overtake and spread in Mesa County.
Some of the Noxious weeds in your yard might include the Yellow flag iris, Dalmatian toadflax, Leafy spurge, Giant reedgrass, Purple loosestrife, Flowering rush, or the Yellow star thistle.
'Without treatment, these plants can form dense monocultures that push out native vegetation and disrupt local ecosystems,' said Mesa County in a news release. 'Most of these plants were originally brought here as an ornamental.'
For nearly two decades, Mesa County's Noxious Weed and Pest Management has worked with private landowners to tackle the plants and educate them on what they are and how to treat them.
Community engagement also plays a factor in keeping the ground treated of noxious weeds by reporting infested areas when they're found.
