The class of 2025 Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) mentees have been in training since March. They will be featured in the upcoming DFF showcase. Image: Supplied Designers from across South Africa are invited to showcase their talent, creativity, and flair on the runway at the annual Durban Fashion Fair. The eThekwini Municipality is calling on designers to apply for the opportunity to showcase their designs at the 14th Durban Fashion Fair (DFF). The DFF, which is one of Africa's most influential fashion events, will take place from 17 to 19 September at The Station Urban Event Space. The showcase is part of the City's broader commitment to developing the creative industry and empowering entrepreneurs in the fashion sector. This year's theme is 'The Awakening'. The event promises to shine the spotlight on bold creativity, while celebrating local talent and amplifying both new and established voices in the fashion space. Makhosi Ntshangase of Sista Fellas, a 2019 DFF mentee and rising star winner, said the DFF launched her career and was key to unlocking doors of opportunity for her. "I learned the business of fashion, networked, and eventually signed a consignment deal with Edgars. I encourage both emerging and established designers to seize this opportunity as it can elevate your brand,' said Ntshangase. Ntshangase and her sister Zamabhele, also a DFF alumna from 2018, opened a fashion school which was accredited by the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing SETA last year. Two of their students were in the top 10 of the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award. Video Player is loading. Nozipho Ntshangase, a mom of eight, opened up about plans to celebrate her 40th birthday in Bali on a solo healing journey. Celebrated recently, this landmark birthday has catalysed Ntshangase to reflect and embark on a new chapter in her life, moving forward with intent and purpose. In a heartfelt interview marking her recent milestone 40th birthday, Nozipho Ntshangase , a familiar face from "The Mommy Club", shared her deeply personal plans for a solo journey aimed at healing and self-discovery. Inspired by the film 'Eat Pray Love', Ntshangase revealed her aspirations for a transformative experience in Bali - a destination that holds significant meaning for her. Although she had to postpone her trip, the allure of Bali remains strong in her heart. She explained, 'I think I need to do my own 'Eat Pray Love'. I also just feel like it's something that I didn't do in my 30s and my 20s. For me, Bali is such a special place.' Her emotional connection to Bali runs deep. It was the backdrop of her honeymoon and the site of her first international voyage. As she expressed, 'I don't want to not have great memories because every time I think of Bali, I'm thinking 'Oh my God, what could have been?' I want to create new memories for myself in the place where I went when I was in love and had just gotten married.' This yearning underscores her desire to shed the weight of past experiences and embrace the possibilities that lie ahead. 'Actually, it was my first international trip. I intentionally selected Bali for those reasons, to just create new memories and set the tone for the next decade of my life. My rules, my way,' she added. The story of 'Eat Pray Love', both as a book and a film, has inspired many to pursue their own paths to self-discovery.

World Oceans Day commemoration with learners
MORE than 300 learners from schools across the south of Durban attended the World Oceans Day event in Durban recently. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans and the broader environment, with presentations, performances, and educational discussions. Oil and gas and livelihoods project officer from South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA), Nomfundo Ntshangase, led the workshop and was part of SDCEA's continued mission to engage and educate the next generation of environmental stewards. Ntshangase said, 'The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans and the broader environment, with engaging presentations, performances, and educational discussions.' These initiatives include: The distribution of water testing kits to local communities, The removal of alien invasive species from river systems to help protect our waterways and oceans. John Peter Narayanasamy of the KwaZulu-Natal Subsistence Fishers Forum (KZNSFF) emphasised the crucial role oceans play in the lives of small-scale fishers. He called for sustainable fishing practices and criticised large commercial fishing operations for destructive offshore netting that results in high levels of by-catch, often fatal to many marine species. He also raised concern over the threat that oil and gas exploration poses to the livelihoods of fishing communities. The learners actively participated in various programmes such as: Sharing poems, Songs, and speeches focused on the value of our oceans. Their presentations covered a wide range of topics, including the ocean's role in: Providing oxygen, food, tourism opportunities, The ocean's significance in religious and cultural practices. They also called for stronger conservation efforts, better enforcement of environmental by-laws, and improved waste management policies by local government. Also read: Mystery of Sardine Run lives on More importantly, the learners linked the health of our oceans to climate change, discussing how ocean acidification and rising sea levels are weakening the ocean's ability to absorb carbon dioxide. They expressed their strong commitment to being part of the solution by reducing waste and participating in clean-up efforts to build a healthier, more sustainable environment. SDCEA co-ordinator Desmond D'Sa provided an overview of the organisation's ongoing efforts to work with schools on environmental education. He emphasised the importance of empowering young people with knowledge and tools to tackle the pressing environmental challenges facing our communities. Raising awareness about Foetal Alcohol Syndrome to protect future generations
Children are said to be the future of the nation, but unfortunately some of them are born with abnormalities caused by alcohol consumption, drug use and smoking before they are born. May being 'Child Protection Awareness Month', the Mondlo Methodist Church took the initiative to raise awareness about Foetal Alcohol Sydrome (FAS), which is a condition that results from alcohol exposure that can affect an unborn baby. The invited guest at the event was Dr NN Ntshangase, a paediatrician from Piet Retief. According to the congregation, the church – as the light and the salt of the world – has a major role to play in the fight against drug and substance abuse to protect the people of God and unborn babies. A short sermon was conducted by local preacher Mr Mbatha. His Scripture reading was from John 13:34, 'A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another as I have loved you.' After the sermon, children displayed placards and gave a prepared speech to the congregation. In her address, Dr Ntshangase explained all the developmental abnormalities caused by alcohol consumption, saying that alcohol acts a toxin to the development of all foetal tissues and organs. The baby's brain and nervous system are the most vulnerable parts. She said FAS may see growth retardation; organ damage (especially the brain, arms, eyes and heart); abnormal facial features; and behavioural problems. Ntshangase then urged all young people not to use drugs, because it's not only their lives that are being destroyed – they are ruining future generations as well. The vote of thanks was done by church steward Dr TP Nkosi.
