HAWANA honours media practitioners, empowers journalism profession

Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said the HAWANA celebration also allowed media practitioners to strengthen ties and exchange opinions on current issues. 'This year, although media personnel will be busy covering and reporting various important events, such as the recent 46th ASEAN Summit, we have not forgotten the HAWANA celebration, which has been gazetted for May 29, in our own way,' she said at the HAWANA 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of BERNAMA Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here The event was officiated by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Nur-ul Afida said Bernama has been tasked with being the implementing agency for the HAWANA celebration by the Communications Ministry since it was introduced in 2018 in Kuala Lumpur. She said that to ensure the celebration is inclusive and covers all states, HAWANA was held in Melaka in 2022, Perak in 2023 and Kuching, Sarawak last year. 'HAWANA is back in Kuala Lumpur to celebrate Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship this year,' she said. At the event, Nur-ul Afida also expressed her appreciation to its 79 strategic partners, comprising ministries, departments, agencies and companies who are committed to making the HAWANA 2025 highlight and side programmes a success. 'Again, I humbly thank all our strategic partners for your continued support, thus recognising the contributions of media practitioners in the field of journalism in Malaysia,' she said. Nur-ul Afida said HAWANA 2025 would be livelier and more beneficial with the inclusion of various events and activities from May until September, starting with the HAWANA-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival, which saw eight teams from media agencies involved in stiff competition, at Wisma Bernama last Saturday. Other main programmes include a media forum jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), a HAWANA carnival and exhibition at the Sunway Putra Mall, a big-scale sports carnival and a HAWANA tour series to leading polytechnics. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', the HAWANA 2025 celebration will be held at the KL World Trade Centre from June 13 to 15, with the highlight celebration on June 14 being officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Over 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media delegates from ASEAN member states are expected to attend, bringing together the professional media fraternity and industry experts to exchange ideas and forge strategic partnerships. Nur-ul Afida also said that the BERNAMA Motorhome, launched today by Fahmi, is a vehicle equipped with mobile studio facilities featuring the latest technology. She added that this is an initiative by Bernama, which celebrated its 58th anniversary last month, to remain relevant in the media industry. 'We, at Bernama, are committed to continuing to strive to implement our goals as the country's official news agency and continue to excel as a trusted news source,' she said.

Bernama must stay agile, innovative to remain relevant

KUALA LUMPUR: Staff of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) must remain agile, efficient and innovative to ensure the 58-year-old news organisation stays relevant, its Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said. She said the evolving landscape of journalism requires Bernama to adapt and remain competitive alongside other media organisations. 'To all Bernama staff, I understand it's not easy to maintain integrity as news agency professionals in today's challenging media environment,' 'But I believe that all of us here can succeed if we hold firmly to the principles of delivering the truth and fostering public understanding,' she said in her speech at the 58th Bernama anniversary celebration here today. Also present were Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, deputy editor-in-chief (news service) Nasriah Darus, deputy editor-in-chief (economic news service) Azlina Aziz and executive editor carrying out the duties of the deputy editor-in-chief (international news service) Mohd Shukri Ishak. Meanwhile, Nur-ul Afida emphasised that Bernama today is no longer the Bernama of the past, as it has to operate in a much more challenging media environment. 'Our content is increasingly vulnerable to 'spun' narratives or outright fake news, often circulated as misleading or unauthenticated information. 'One of Bernama's major challenges lies in meeting the rising expectations of its clients and stakeholders, especially as other media organisations are capable of offering more, in line with technological advancements such as Artificial Intelligence (AI),' she said. To address these demands and ensure that Bernama's workforce remains competent and competitive, Nur-ul Afida said the agency is placing greater emphasis on training and upskilling, particularly in journalism courses and AI-related education.

63 Bernama Staff Receive Excellent Service Award 2024

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- Sixty-three staff of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) received the 2024 Excellent Service Award (APC) today, in recognition of their outstanding performance and contributions over the past year. Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said that most of the recipients were first-time awardees, many of whom have served the agency for over a decade. 'We believe the time is right to recognise them and to give a morale booster for them to continue delivering their best. Some recipients are also receiving the award for the second or third time,' she said after the ceremony, held at the Seri Angkasa Auditorium, Angkasapuri Media City here. The event was graced by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and also attended by Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and the ministry's secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa. Nur-ul Afida said that with nearly 1,000 staff across Bernama, it was impossible for the agency to give such recognition to all its staff at once, but it is hoped that the awards would inspire others to pursue excellence. Looking ahead, she highlighted Bernama's commitment to embracing the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), especially within its broadcasting operations. 'We're currently training our in-house talents to become skilled AI-driven writers and content producers,' she said. In line with this, Nur-ul Afida said Bernama has launched a series of focused AI training programmes, including sessions for media practitioners in Sabah and Sarawak, funded through a RM1 million government allocation announced during last year's National Journalists Day (HAWANA). 'Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly as many participants wouldn't have had the opportunity to attend such courses,' she explained.
