Wei Chong-Kai Wun win all-Malaysian battle to reach China Open quarters

PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun earned a hard-fought spot in the China Open quarter-finals after edging compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong in an all-Malaysian clash. It was far from a straightforward win for Wei Chong-Kai Wun, who were pushed to the limit by the experienced Azriyn-Wee Kiong duo. After dropping the opening game, the younger pair fought back to force a decider and eventually prevailed 17-21, 21-17, 21-19 in a 57-minute battle. Their victory sets up another all-Malaysian encounter in the quarter-finals against Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, with Malaysia now assured of at least one representative in the semi-finals.

Azriyn-Wee Kiong stun Popov brothers at Japan Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Independent pair Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong pulled off a gritty upset to reach the second round of the Japan Open on Tuesday. The world No. 26 staged a remarkable comeback to topple the world No. 18 Popov brothers, Christo and Toma Junior of France, 13-21, 21-17, 21-19 in a pulsating first-round clash at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Azriyn-Wee Kiong once again proved their affinity for Japanese soil after having reached the semi-finals of the Kumamoto Masters in Japan last November. The veteran pair are now likely to face Danish fourth seeds Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the last 16 — a daunting test, but one they will relish following the spirited win. Meanwhile, world No. 42 Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee showed plenty of promise before bowing out 17-21, 21-8, 21-8 to Japan's world No. 6 Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi.
