South Korea–Malaysia FTA To Deepen Ties, Says Envoy
BUSINESS By Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi & & Nur Elysa Amirah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- South Korean Ambassador to Malaysia, Yeo Seung Bae, expressed Seoul's strong commitment to concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) with Malaysia, saying the partnership is poised to become stronger and more comprehensive. Yeo said both leaders have reaffirmed their intention to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, green growth, infrastructure, digital transformation, and the defence industry. 'Having held more than nine rounds of negotiations, we have now entered the final phase. 'So I expect when the two leaders meet, likely on the occasion of the ASEAN summit in late October, FTA negotiations will be finalised, which would be very good news for both peoples," he told Bernama. He said the Korea–Malaysia FTA is not merely a conventional trade and investment agreement, but a comprehensive one that also covers digital transition, the digital economy, the green economy, and the bio-economy. "These are so-called future industry, high-value, high-tech industry. So through this bilateral free trade agreement, not only Korean businesses or Korean people, but also Malaysian people and Malaysian people's businesses, farmers and even fishers will get some benefit. "Because the contents of FTA are not revealed publicly yet, so I cannot say more details about that, but what can I say, yes, we have a very promising future for both countries in terms of industry and business cooperation," he added. On June 23, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in a substantive and mutually beneficial manner, including efforts to conclude the FTA.

Korea is Back: Culture to Deepen Bilateral Ties with Malaysia

The embassy has just concluded a 12-day K-Culture Festival, running from June 11 to June 22, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) and other Korean government agencies. bootstrap slideshow Yeo said that the event exceeded expectations, attracting over 35,000 people of all ages and backgrounds, clearly reflecting South Korea's success in promoting its national appeal to Malaysians. 'This festival featured various events spanning food, tourism, beauty and music, held continuously over 12 days,' he said, noting it was also organised to mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Malaysia. 'This event also coincided with the formation of our new government earlier this month, so through this festival, the embassy wishes to convey the message that Korea is back,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview at the Embassy recently. Among the festival highlights, Yeo said, was a cooking show featuring Michelin-starred Korean chefs who introduced premium and Halal-certified Korean beef to the Malaysian public. Other key events included a Tourism Roadshow, which showcased popular South Korean travel destinations, especially those favoured by Malaysians, and a K-Beauty segment led by experienced Korean makeup artists, where participants could try and learn about Korean cosmetics. 'The most popular event was the Korea-ASEAN Music Festival, which brought together artists from Korea and all 10 ASEAN member countries. Around 4,000 people, mostly young Malaysians, attended, and it was truly a beautiful sight,' he added.

Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Ukraine in Malaysia, Denys Mykhailiuk, said that while Malaysia and Ukraine have traditionally traded commodities such as palm oil and sunflower oil, the time has come to diversify into high-tech industries, without sidelining existing trade in oils. bootstrap slideshow 'Trading in services is very important now, and we are one of the biggest countries in IT, so we hope that our experience and our digital products might be useful for Malaysians to become a digital nation as well. 'We know for a fact that the Ukrainian IT and artificial intelligence sectors are definitely admirable, and we have also seen that they have attracted Malaysian interest,' he said during an interview on Bernama TV's programme The Nation, titled Bridging Continents: Malaysia–Ukraine Relations in Focus, on Tuesday. He also mentioned that discussions have already been initiated with relevant Malaysian ministries, including potential areas of collaboration in innovation and cybersecurity. 'For the digital products, we are talking to the Ministry of Digitalisation, and the police as well, because it is a slightly different system in Ukraine. 'In Ukraine, the Ministry of Digitalisation has the aegis authority over all other agencies, whereas here, you have some kind of competition, in which every ministry is responsible for its part,' he said. Acknowledging structural differences between the two countries, Mykhailiuk said these challenges do not hinder business-to-business (B2B) ties, which he described as strong and promising.

As War Halts Dreams, Palestinian Youth Champion Education For freedom

A representative from the General Union of Palestinian Students - Malaysia Branch (GUPS), Dr Mohammed R.M Salem, said the quest for knowledge has become a form of empowerment for young Palestinians, many of whom have had their dreams disrupted by war. bootstrap slideshow 'We seek peace, prosperity, and the right to live – not violence or expansion. This reflects the difference between a nation that strives to live and progress, and one that seeks power by oppressing others. 'We will continue with our cause today, tomorrow, and for as long as it takes until Palestine is free,' he told Bernama at the 'More Than A War, It's Genocide' forum held at the National Art Gallery here. The forum was the highlight of the two-day 'The World Unites for Palestine' campaign organised by Year Three students from the Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy Programme, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The campaign aimed to raise awareness, promote cultural exchange and support the well-being of Palestinians living in Malaysia. Despite facing decades of adversity, Palestinians remain among the most literate populations in the world. According to data, as of Jan 31, 2025, literacy rate in Palestine was 96 per cent – slightly lower than the 97.8 per cent recorded in 2022.
