Ensure no lapses in maternal and child healthcare: Collector

Chittoor: As part of maternal and child healthcare initiatives, District Collector Sumit Kumar has instructed medical officers to ensure continuous supervision so that ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwives) and ASHA workers perform their duties diligently in their respective areas. Speaking at a review meeting on Wednesday, the Collector said that maternal and infant deaths can be completely prevented if services under the RCH (Reproductive and Child Health) programme, such as the registration of pregnant women and the delivery of necessary healthcare services, are provided meticulously and thoroughly. The meeting was aimed at discussing three recent maternal deaths that occurred in Kolamasanapalle, Ogu and Vijalapuram PHCs. He stated that there should be no lapses in the registration of pregnant women and that Anganwadi registers must be properly maintained for accuracy. He highlighted that timely provision of nutritional supplements through Anganwadi centres can help prevent anaemia among pregnant women. The Collector stressed that ANMs and ASHA workers should pay special attention to pregnant women right from the time of conception until delivery, ensuring they do not develop anaemia. High-risk pregnant women should be monitored closely for their health status and provided with appropriate medical care as needed. He called for proactive measures both at the district level and primary healthcare level to ensure maternal deaths do not occur in the future. Sumit Kumar added that registering every newborn child is crucial to ensure timely vaccination and to monitor the health status of children regularly. In this context, medical officers play a key role in ensuring that ANMs and ASHA workers fulfill their responsibilities efficiently. District Medical and Health Officer Dr DT Sudha Rani, Deputy DM&HO Dr Venkata Prasad, DIO Dr C Hanumantha Rao, programme officers, medical officers, and other officials were present.

JIPMER to conduct regional component of ICMR survey on assistive tech

PUDUCHERRY: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched a nationwide survey titled 'Assessment of Unmet Needs and Access to Assistive Technologies among the General Population through Digital rATA Tool – A Cross-Sectional Study in India.' Among the 25 designated sites across the country, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, has been selected to carry out the regional component of the study. The Puducherry leg of the survey is being spearheaded by Dr Venkatachalam J, Additional Professor in the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine (P&SM), in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services (DHFWS), Government of Puducherry. To ensure smooth implementation of the study, the ICMR team and the site's Principal Investigator recently met with Dr V Ravichandran, Director of DHFWS. Emphasising the critical role of community healthcare workers, Dr Ravichandran said. 'The support of ASHA workers and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) from local Primary Health Centres is essential for reaching the target population and facilitating accurate data collection. I urge the residents of Puducherry to actively take part in the survey, which will help shape future public health strategies and improve access to assistive technologies.' The survey will employ the digital Rapid Assistive Technology Assessment (rATA) tool and will cover 21 wards in the Ozhukarai Municipality. A team of trained field researchers will conduct door-to-door visits to gather data from residents. The findings are expected to offer critical insights to guide evidence-based policymaking aimed at expanding access to assistive technologies and improving the quality of life for individuals with unmet health needs.

HC upholds new eligibility for ANM, health workers, but bars retrospective effect

Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court has upheld the revised eligibility criteria for the appointment of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and female health workers, but ruled that the changes cannot be applied retrospectively. More than 4000 candidates had filed petitions, challenging the changes in eligibility criteria. The petitioners said MP Staff Selection Board (MPSSB) had advertised vacancies for recruitments on the post of ANM, female health workers and other posts. On Feb 2, 2019, eligibility criteria for the post of ANM and female health workers was amended. In place of 10th, a person having passed 12th with the subjects physics, chemistry and biology could have applied for the post. Besides, the tenure of nursing training was also raised from 18 months to 24 months. The Indian Nursing Council had made the changes in eligibility criteria in 2012-13. After hearing the argument from all sides, the bench of chief justice S K Kait and Justice Vivek Jain had reserved its judgement. The court in its judgement pronounced on Tuesday upheld the changes in eligibility criteria but said that it would not be done with retrospective effect. The court clarified that candidates who passed the class 10th and took admission in college for nursing training before the academic session 2012-13 would be eligible to apply for the posts. Following this date, only those who have received 24 months of nursing training will be eligible. All the persons who passed class 12th with any subjects before the session 2018-19 will be eligible but following this, only persons who have passed class 12th with physics, chemistry and biology will be eligible to apply.
