Man fined RM2,500 for operating printing press without KDN licence
KANGAR: A 34-year-old man was fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate's Court today for operating a printing press without a valid licence from the Home Ministry (KDN). Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim imposed the fine after Muhammad Suhail Sazali pleaded guilty to the charge. Muhammad Suhail, who was unrepresented, paid the fine immediately. The offence occurred at Suhail Enterprise Premises, No. 4, Jalan Stadium Utama, Padang Nyaring, at 11.45 am on Oct 15, 2024. He was charged under Section 3(4) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (Act 301). The law stipulates a maximum penalty of RM20,000 or three years' imprisonment or both upon conviction. Prosecuting Officer Esmahalil Ismail from the Perlis KDN Enforcement and Control Division handled the case. - Bernama

Thai national charged with trafficking 2,987g of cannabis
KANGAR: A Thai man was charged at the magistrate's court here today with trafficking 2,987g of cannabis at the Bukit Ketri Railway Station near Padang Besar on June 11. However, no plea was recorded from the accused, Mahmud Chaidilok, 21, who nodded in understanding after the charge was read out by the court interpreter before magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim. According to the charge, the man is accused of trafficking the drugs at the railway station at around 9.40pm on June 11. Mahmud is charged under Section 39B(1)(A) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, along with not less than 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death. The court did not allow the Thai national to be released on bail as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Meanwhile, in the same court, the accused pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of self-administering a dangerous drug, methamphetamine, at the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division Office of the Padang Besar District police headquarters at 4am on June 12. He was charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is liable to punishment under Section 15(1) of the same Act, which provides for a maximum of two years' imprisonment or a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. The court ruled that the accused be remanded without bail and set Sept 30 for the next case mention. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Natasha Azmi while the accused was unrepresented. – Bernama

Jobless man claims trial to assaulting grandmother
KANGAR: A jobless man pleaded not guilty at the magistrate's court today to a charge of assaulting his grandmother in Padang Besar here last week. The accused, Mohd A'izzat Arzami, 29, entered the plea when the charge was read before magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim. He was accused of voluntarily causing hurt to Che Minah Man, 74, outside a house in Batu 16, Jalan Kaki Bukit, Kaki Bukit, Padang Besar, at 5pm on June 21. The charge provides for a maximum one-year jail term, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Tengku Ruqayyah Tengku Shahrom requested for bail to be set at RM6,000. However, defence counsel Afida Nurizzatie Abdul Lateh appealed for a lower sum, saying her client had lost both his parents and was currently living alone. The court then allowed bail at RM4,000 with the condition that the accused must not disturb the victim throughout the course of the proceedings. The court fixed July 21 for mention.
