Vigil for 'four beautiful souls' killed in fire

About 150 residents gathered for a prayer service in Brent, north London on Tuesday evening to remember a mother and three of her children who died in a house fire. Nusrat Usman, 43, her daughter Maryam Mikaiel, 15 and sons Musa Usman, eight, and Raees Usman, four, died when their home in Stonebridge went up in flames on Saturday morning. A 13-year-old girl, who has not been named, remains in hospital in a critical condition, while a woman in her 70s has been discharged. Local councillor Muhammed Butt told BBC London the tragedy had united the community. The vigil was held in the middle of the housing estate where the four lost their lives. Mr Butt, who is leader of Brent Council, told BBC London: "We are mourning the loss of four beautiful souls. "I live just around the corner, just across the road, and the community is so united. "Everyone knows one another so to have this tragedy you can see, you can feel the loss that people are feeling. "They care about one another, they look after one another and they care about everyone." Members of the community spoke about the loss of the family and how the father Ozzy was still coming to terms the tragedy. Eight fire engines and about 70 firefighters from stations across Wembley, Park Royal and Willesden were sent to tackle the blaze. A teddy bear and flowers were seen laid near the properties over the weekend. The London Fire Brigade said a woman and child were initially rescued from the second floor of one of the affected properties and received emergency care but were declared dead at the scene. Two more children were found inside the property and also declared dead, it added. One neighbour, who said the family had moved to the UK from Pakistan more than 20 years ago, told the BBC that after hearing smashing and screaming, she had gone out to find the building on fire. The Metropolitan Police said a man, 41, had been arrested on suspicion of murder outside the property. He has since been bailed and detained under the Mental Health Act. Dad whose family was killed in fire keeps bedside vigil for surviving daughter

A man whose wife and three children died in a fire at the family home in north London is 'devastated' and keeping vigil at the bedside of his surviving daughter who was also injured, a family friend said. The dad, 43, suffered burns after trying to save his wife Nusrat Usman, 43, and their children Maryam Mikaiel, 15, Musa Usman, 8, and Raees Usman, 4, after the blaze broke out at their home in Tillett Close, Stonebridge in the early hours of Saturday morning. Local councillor Tariq Dar MBE and Islamic scholar Mufti Abdul Wahab have named Usman Ghani as the man whose children and wife have been killed. Usman, a former bus driver, 'lived for his family', according to a family friend who spoke to Metro. The couple's surviving daughter, 13, is in hospital fighting for her life. A woman in her 70s was also taken to hospital but has since been released The family friend said: 'He is a loving soul who lives for his family. He is struggling to eat or speak at the moment he is devastated and in total shock. 'He went back into the house to try to save his family and has burns. His daughter is seriously injured. He is at her bedside in hospital, praying she will pull through. It's all he has left to cling onto. 'He called her his little angel and that's what she is. She is his light, his hope. They are a British Pakistani family. My family had known theirs for 30 years. They are lovely people, so respected in the community. 'That's why so many people tried to help when there broke out. They are well loved neighbours.' The friend said the family dog also escaped with its life from the inferno. The dad loves the dog and it's another small thing for him as a crumb of comfort at this time. He is heartbroken. I have been trying to console him but what do you say to someone who has suffered this? 'His kids who died were wonderful. One of my children is in the same class as his and we are all struggling to cope with the loss. After he had to leave bus driving over health issues, he devoted himself to his family. Everything was for the kids.' Mr Wahab wrote on Facebook: 'It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of the wife and three beloved children—a daughter and two young sons—of Brother Usman Ghani in a tragic house fire in Wembley last night. Four people tragically died in a house fire in Brent, northwest London, in the early hours of Saturday morning - here's everything we know so far as one girl remains in hospital fighting for her life A community has been left in mourning after a fire ripped through a home and claimed the lives of a mother and her three children - with one girl still fighting for her life. Neighbours living in Brent, northwest London, awoke to huge flames in the early hours of Saturday morning. Emergency services raced to Tillett Close in Stonebridge shortly after 1am. A mother, aged 43, along with her 15-year-old daughter and two sons - aged eight and four - were sadly discovered dead. An elderly family member, aged 70, and a teenage girl were hospitalised for treatment. Police and locals have since come forward with further information about the family who died. ‌ ‌ Police name victims Police have named the mother who was killed in the fire as Nusrat Usman. Her deceased children were identified as Maryam Mikaiel, 15, Musa Usman, eight, and Raees Usman, four. A woman in her 70s was taken to hospital but has since been released. A 13-year-old girl remains in hospital in a critical condition. Hero neighbour recalls terrifying moment A tradesman who saved a grandmother and her granddaughter from the fire recalled the moment he ran into the burning building. Victor Pedra, 33, cut his hand as he broke a window on the lower floor to reach the trapped family at around 1.15am. He managed to create access for the nan and girl but couldn't get to the mother and her youngest son who were on the second floor. He told Mail Online: 'The flames were so strong and there was smoke everywhere. I couldn't get to the second floor where the mum and her youngest son was. I couldn't sleep that night as I just kept hearing the screams from inside the house.' His partner Leticia Maria, 31, added: 'The little girl managed to escape and was covered in black stuff from the smoke. She looked about 12-years-old. No one knows what caused the fire but you could hear explosions like things were popping." ‌ Man arrested after fire The Met Police confirmed a 41-year-old man was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident. He has since been bailed and was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act. Superintendent Steve Allen said: 'Despite the efforts of the emergency services, I can confirm a woman and three of her children died at the scene. 'A further two members of the same family were taken to hospital and continue to receive treatment. The wider family have been informed, and officers will continue to support them at this incredibly difficult time. I recognise the significant impact this incident has had on the community.' ‌ Mum was pregnant Neighbours have revealed the mother was expecting another baby. Locals also described the family as "nice" and said they had lived in Brent for a long time. Speaking to the MailOnline, one neighbour said: "A Somali family lived next door. They came out through the back because the front door was stuck. I brought the children into my house. They were distraught and shaken up." A fundraiser has since been launched to support the rest of the family. Donations reached £15,000 at the time of publishing. To further donate, visit here.

Mother and three children who died after house fire named by police

Nusrat Usman, 43, her 15-year-old daughter Maryam Mikaiel, 15, and two sons Musa Usman, eight, and Raees Usman, four, died at the scene of the blaze which gutted the two terraced homes in Tillett Close, Stonebridge, in the early hours of Saturday. Two other family members, a woman in her 70s and a 13-year-old girl, were taken to hospital. The woman has since been released, police said, but the girl remains in hospital in a critical condition. A 41-year-old man who was arrested outside the houses has since been bailed and was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act, the Metropolitan Police said. Superintendent Steve Allen, from the Met's local policing team in north-west London, said: 'Our thoughts go out to all those impacted by what has happened. 'Specialist officers are continuing to support the wider family who have asked for privacy at this deeply upsetting time. 'Local officers are working closely with officers from the Specialist Crime Command on what continues to be a very complex investigation. 'I'd like to thank the members of public, our first responding officers and colleagues from other emergency services for their efforts during this highly pressurised and distressing incident. 'Equally, we appreciate this has affected the wider community who have been extremely supportive. You will see extra officers in the area during the coming days and some of the cordons will remain in place. 'We are grateful for your patience and understanding. If you have any concerns then please speak to them.' On Sunday morning, the road outside the terraced houses remained cordoned off, with two fire engines still at the scene. Bunches of flowers and a blue teddy bear were left near to the homes and crews wearing helmets and respiratory equipment were seen building scaffolding against the burnt out buildings. Neighbours said the family are of Pakistani origin and had lived on Tillett Close, in the Brent area, for a long time.
