UAE calls for 'concrete, collective action' to save lives in Sudan

The UAE has reiterated its call for "concrete, collective action" to save lives in Sudan at a high-level international conference in London. Heading the UAE delegation, Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, said the transition to a "civilian-led government independent from military control" is the only way to "secure and sustain peace in Sudan". "The UAE is unequivocal: neither the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) represents the people of Sudan and neither can bring stability to Sudan," she added. "Only a Sudanese-led, civilian-driven process rooted in civilian and independent leadership can deliver meaningful change." To develop this roadmap, she argued that the international community needs to "create new mechanisms that can deliver real impact", including new measures to tackle security threats and end the obstruction of aid. The UK co-hosted the one-day London Sudan Conference along with Germany, France, the African Union and the European Union. It saw foreign ministers and humanitarian leaders come together to mark the second year of the Sudan conflict. During the conference, Nusseibeh outlined the consequences of the conflict that the Sudanese people continue to endure, including widespread atrocities, the reported use of chemical weapons, and obstruction and weaponisation of humanitarian assistance, and condemned acts that violate international humanitarian law. The minister sought for a mechanism to monitor the flow of arms into Sudan, and urged "concrete and collective action to build a peaceful, unified, and hopeful future for the country". Looking at the regional dimension of the conflict, Nusseibeh said, "Our approach must recognise that Sudan does not exist in isolation and that lasting peace requires addressing wider regional risks... Preventing these networks from taking root is integral to any serious effort to support Sudan's future." She also urged the UN to adopt a more robust response in the face of the systematic obstruction and weaponisation of food aid, adding that the Sudanese "deserve protection, access and accountability and we need to do much more". Lana Nusseibeh also underlined during her statement the importance of achieving and sustaining the full participation of women, and supporting their full, equal, and meaningful inclusion in the political process. In conclusion, she reiterated the demand for "principled leadership and sustained international resolve". Since the outbreak of the conflict, the UAE has provided over $600 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan and neighbouring countries. The country remains committed to standing by the Sudanese people and to working with international partners to alleviate suffering and advance peace.

2 years of Sudan war: UAE calls for peace, end to 'humanitarian catastrophe'

The UAE has made an urgent call for peace as the war in Sudan spills into a third year. Lana Nusseibeh, UAE's Assistant Minister for Political Affairs, said in a statement that the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Sudan is among the world's most severe: over 30 million people are in need of urgent assistance, famine is spreading, and aid is being deliberately blocked. "Atrocities continue to be committed by both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The SAF's continued offensives — marked by starvation tactics, indiscriminate bombardment of populated areas, reprisals against civilians, including emergency response room workers, and the reported use of chemical weapons — have inflicted unimaginable suffering on a civilian population already on the brink of collapse," Nusseibeh said. The UAE has condemned these atrocities unequivocally and calls for accountability. "The UAE also strongly condemns recent attacks on civilians in Darfur, including the brutal assaults on the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps near El Fasher, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries. All parties to the conflict must halt the deliberate targeting of humanitarian workers and the indiscriminate shelling of schools, markets, and hospitals," the statement said. The UAE also called for immediate action on three fronts. A ceasefire and political process The guns must fall silent. The UAE urges both the SAF and RSF to agree to an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire and come to the negotiating table in good faith. There can be no military solution—only a political one that reflects the will of the Sudanese people. Unhindered humanitarian access The obstruction of aid is unconscionable and the weaponisation of humanitarian aid and food supplies is a condemned act. Both parties must allow immediate, safe, and urgent access for humanitarian organisations to reach those in desperate need across Sudan. The UAE calls on the UN to prevent warring parties from using humanitarian aid for military or political purposes. The lives of millions of civilians depend on it. International pressure The international community must act urgently to facilitate a political process, increase humanitarian assistance, and exert coordinated pressure on all actors fuelling the conflict. We call for a transition to a civilian-led and independent government — the only form of leadership that can legitimately represent the people of Sudan and lay the foundation for lasting peace. The world cannot allow Sudan to spiral further into chaos, extremism, and fragmentation, the statement said. The statement further added: "Since the outbreak of the conflict, the UAE has provided more than $600 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan and neighbouring countries —including through UN agencies, impartially, based on need and without discrimination. We remain committed to supporting the Sudanese people and to working with international partners to alleviate the suffering and push for peace. "The time for action is now. The killing must stop. Sudan's future must be built on peace, justice, and civilian leadership, independent from military control — not on the ambitions of those who seek to prolong war at the expense of their own people."

UAE Advocates for Peace and Economic Cooperation at Munich Security Conference

Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and Envoy of the UAE Foreign Minister to the European Union, led the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs delegation at this year's Munich Security Conference, which brought together global leaders to address pressing international security issues. During the conference, Nusseibeh emphasized the urgent need for regional de-escalation, highlighting the importance of upholding the ceasefire in Gaza and supporting efforts toward a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel. She also discussed the stabilization efforts in Lebanon and Syria, stressing their role in achieving lasting peace in the region. The humanitarian crisis in Sudan was another key focus of Nusseibeh's discussions. She urged international support for the UAE's proposed ceasefire initiative alongside Ethiopia, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Nusseibeh reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to aid Sudan, announcing an additional US$200 million in assistance. As the UAE's Envoy to the EU, Nusseibeh also met with top European officials to strengthen ties between the UAE and the European Union, especially in the areas of free trade and economic growth. She emphasized the UAE's growing role as an economic hub, citing the country's successful Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements with over 20 countries. In a panel discussion, Nusseibeh highlighted the importance of diversifying international partnerships and creating strong "connective tissue" among nations to adapt to shifting global dynamics. The UAE delegation included Ahmed Alattar, UAE Ambassador to Germany, Mohamed al Sahlawi, UAE Ambassador to Belgium and the EU, and Muath Alwari, Director of Policy Planning in the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
