Love You: Kannada director makes first AI-generated feature film; check other artificial intelligence movies coming soon

Kannada writer-director Narasimha Murthy is making a feature film, Love You. it is claimed to be the world's first AI-generated feature film, according to a report by The Times of India. Taking on the dual roles of producer and director, Murthy has revealed that the project will premiere on a single screen to set a record. Apart from him, the only other human involved was Nuthan, a graphic artist-turned-AI technician. The team licensed around 30 AI tools, with the software costs totalling nearly ₹10 lakh. The 95-minute film, which includes 12 songs, took approximately six months to complete. However, Murthy acknowledged its limitations. The regional censor officer reportedly noted inconsistencies in character features across scenes. Murthy also admitted that creating emotional expressions and achieving proper lip-syncing posed challenges. Nuthan spoke about the rapid evolution of AI and noted that the tools used were already outdated. "If we recreated the same film today, it would be a thousand times better. That's no exaggeration, as Al tech is evolving every day. The tools we used are already six months old," TOI quoted Nuthan as saying. "I was a graphic designer and ad filmmaker, and AI was completely new to me. It was all trial and error, and it took us six months. But, give me a script now and I can deliver a film in two months," he said. Is Love You the first AI-generated feature film? While Love You claims to be the first AI-generated feature film, the trailer of another AI movie called Naisha was released on February 27. The movie features fully AI-made visuals and lead characters. It follows Naisha, a Bengali-Mizo girl, and Zain, a rapper and swimmer. First AI film in Kannada was made by a priest on ₹10 lakh budget in 6 months, with no actors or crew; here's how

A priest from the Siddehalli village near Bengaluru, Karnataka, has thrown a curveball at the Kannada film industry by making a film on a limited budget and limited time with no actors, musicians or crew. Narasimha Murthy used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bring to life the story of his dreams. Here's how he made Sandalwood's first AI-generated film. The 95-minute Kannada film has even been certified U/A by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), signalling a milestone for AI-generated films in India. The two-member duo designed everything from the cast to the soundtrack and visuals, including drone shots. Thirty different AI tools were used to complete Love You in six months on a budget of ₹10 lakh, most of which was spent on software licensing. Narasimha spoke to TOI and stated that he wanted to make the 'world's first AI feature film and release it' in theatres. His plan is to screen it on just one screen to set a record. The film has 12 original songs and AI-generated dialogues, though he contributed to the lyrics and dialogues. Despite his claim, Love You is not the world's first AI-generated movie, with Where The Robots Grow having already been released in 2024. Talking about how the CBFC reacted, he told them, 'Even the regional censor officer pointed out inconsistencies in the characters' features from scene to scene. Creating emotional expressions was a challenge, and lip-syncing is far from ideal.' However, the board was impressed by the 'film's ambition and innovation'. Nuthan stated that AI technology was developing so fast, the current tools are far advanced than what they used, 'The tools we used are already six months old. If we recreated the same film today, it would be a thousand times better.' Narasimha already has two more AI-generated projects based on Bengaluru's founder, Kempe Gowda, and historical figure Immadi Pulikeshi in the works.

Bengaluru temple priest creates ‘world's first AI-generated film'

1 2 Bengaluru: On most days, Narasimha Murthy serves as a priest at Hanumantharaya Temple in Sidedahalli village, near Peenya. But his true passion lies in filmmaking. After directing two feature films, Murthy has now created what he claims is the world's first AI-generated feature film, in Kannada. It has already been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification. "I wanted to make the world's first AI feature film and release it. To begin with, I'll be screening it on just one screen to set the record," Murthy, who took on the roles of both producer and director, told TOI. Apart from him, the only other human involved in the project was Nuthan, a graphic artist-turned-AI technician. "We licensed around 30 AI tools and software for the film, and the total cost of the licence came to approximately Rs 10 lakh," Murthy said. It took about six months to complete the 95-minute film, which also features 12 songs. However, the duo acknowledged that the fast-paced evolution of AI tech can quickly render tools outdated. "I won't claim the film is perfect as we worked within certain limitations," Murthy admitted. "Even the regional censor officer pointed out inconsistencies in the characters' features from scene to scene. Creating emotional expressions was a challenge, and the lip-syncing is far from ideal." "If we recreated the same film today, it would be a thousand times better. That's no exaggeration, as AI tech is evolving every day. The tools we used are already six months old," said Nuthan, who believes the time required to make AI-generated films is shrinking. "I was a graphic designer and ad filmmaker, and AI was completely new to me. It was all trial and error, and it took us six months. But give me a script now and I can deliver a film in two months," he added. Murthy and Nuthan are now working on two historical AI films, one based on Kempe Gowda and the other on Immadi Pulikeshi. The former is expected to be completed within two months. Meanwhile, the characters of the world's first AI-generated film await their box office fate. The lead characters, Nuthan and Ashwini, along with their voices, were entirely created using AI. However, Murthy wrote all the dialogues and lyrics for the film.
