Former Colts playmaker returns to NFL after two-year absence
A former fixture of the Colts offense has returned to the NFL after a lengthy injury absence. On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers signed former Colts running back Nyheim Hines to a deal. Hines joins the Chargers four days into their training camp activities and will get a shot to make an immaculate comeback from injury. Advertisement Hines played four full seasons in Indy, mostly operating as a versatile receiving back. In 65 games (12 starts), he hauled in 210 receptions for 1,537 receiving yards (7.3 yards per catch) and seven touchdowns. In addition, he rushed for 1,169 yards (4.1 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns. The Colts traded Hines to Buffalo at the 2022 deadline before tearing his ACL the following summer in a jet skiing accident. The 28-year-old was released and signed with the Browns ahead of the 2024 season but never made an appearance. He was released in February. Now, Hines lands with his fourth different AFC team since being drafted in 2018. He faces an uphill battle towards playing time, but still will be in the mix for a roster spot. The Chargers drafted Omarion Hampton in the first round in April and signed Najee Harris to a one-year, $5.25 million deal in free agency. Los Angeles also has Hassan Haskins and second-year back Kimani Vidal on their depth chart. If Hines proves himself healthy and sharp enough to be back on the field, he could carve out a role for himself in the Chargers offense.

Former Colts RB eyes NFL regular season return after missing 2 years with injury
Former Indianapolis Colts' running back Nyheim Hines, who hasn't played since the 2022 season, is looking to return to NFL regular season action. Hines would tear his ACL in a jet-ski accident during the 2023 offseason and didn't play in the NFL during that season. He signed with Cleveland last offseason but didn't appear in any games in 2024 either. But now, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Hines believes his knee is ready as he looks to make a full return. Hines was a fourth-round pick by the Colts in 2018 and played four-plus seasons with the team prior to being traded to the Buffalo Bills during the 2022 season. In that trade, the Colts would receive running back Zach Moss and a 2023 conditional sixth-round pick. Moss spent the rest of the 2022 season with the Colts and all of 2023, appearing in 22 games while averaging 4.5 yards per rush during that span. During Hines' career with the Colts, he appeared in 81 games and made 17 starts. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry overall, but was a big factor in the passing game, totaling 60-plus targets in two of his four full seasons with the team. Hines was also a kick and punt returner with the Colts as well, averaging almost 12 yards per return on punts. With the Bills to finish out the 2022 season, Hines' role on offense was minimal, but he continued to handle return man duties, which included scoring two touchdowns on kick returns. I wouldn't anticipate a reunion with the Colts, but according to Schefter's report, Hines will be looking to catch on with an NFL team for the 2025 season. Nyheim Hines reaches agreement with Chargers two years after jet ski accident: report
Running back Nyheim Hines is reportedly making his football return after not playing in the NFL the last two seasons due to an injury sustained in a Jet Ski accident. Hines, 28, reached agreement on a contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to an ESPN report. Hines tore an ACL in July 2023 when he was struck by a Jet Ski. Hines was with the Buffalo Bills and was their top kick and punt returner on the depth chart at the time of the injury. The former N.C. State star signed with the Cleveland Browns in the 2024 offseason but never played a game with the team due to the ACL injury. Hines has an uphill battle for a roster spot. He will compete with Hassan Haskins, Kimani Vidal and Jaret Patterson for a backup running back position. The top two running backs on the depth chart are set ahead of Hines. The Chargers selected Omarion Hampton with their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and signed veteran running back Najee Harris. Harris has run for over 1,000 yards in four straight seasons, but he is expected to begin training camp on the non-football injury list after he injured his eye July 4 in a fireworks mishap. In his career, Hines has been a dual threat running back. In 81 career games, Hines has 1,202 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns while averaging 3.9 yards per attempt. Hines also has 240 catches for 1,778 yards and eight receiving touchdowns while averaging 7.4 yards per reception. On special teams, Hines has two punt returns for touchdowns and two kick returns for touchdowns in his career.

RB Nyheim Hines reportedly signing with Chargers, 2 seasons after injury from water-craft collision threatened his career
Nyheim Hines is back in the NFL Two years after a personal water-craft collision left him with a torn ACL and threatened to end his football career, Hines has agreed to sign with the Los Angeles Chargers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Terms of the deal weren't initially reported. But Hines is back in an NFL training camp after a two-season absence from professional football. Hines joins a Chargers backfield that features first-round rookie Omarion Hampton and former Steelers Pro Bowler Najee Harris. Hines projects as a third-down back and pass catcher out of the backfield who can also return kicks if he ultimately makes the 53-man roster. Hines, 28, last played for the Buffalo Bills in 2022. The Bills traded for Hines midseason that year in a deal that sent running back Zack Moss to the Indianapolis Colts. The first-place Bills added Hines as a change-of-pace weapon to a backfield that had already featured James Cook and Devin Singletary. A third-down back with more career receiving yards (1,778) than rushing yards (1,202), Hines played sparingly in Buffalo's offense in nine games for the remainder of the season. He was a force on special teams and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a single game in a season-finale win over the New England Patriots. Personal water-craft collision threatened Hines' career Hines was expected to take on a larger role for the Bills in 2023 in his first full season after Singletary left for the Houston Texans in free agency. But the offseason accident sidelined him for the entire season. Just before training camp in 2023, Hines was sitting stationary on a personal water craft when another rider hit him, according to the Associated Press. The accident left Hines with a torn ACL in his left knee. He spent the entire 2023 season on injured reserve. Hines then signed with the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2024 season, but was never elevated to the active roster while still recovering from the injury. The Browns released him in February. Hines worked out for the Chargers on Monday and impressed them enough to earn a contract. He'll join a run-focused offense led by offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who previously oversaw the Baltimore Ravens' run-heavy attack before joining the Chargers last season. A fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Colts, Hines played his first 3 1/2 NFL seasons for Indianapolis.
