I Tried Dozens of Body Scrubs for Soft Skin—These Are the Only Ones Worth Buying
No matter how streamlined your 'everything shower' routine may be, there's one essential step that often gets overlooked: body exfoliation. Although it takes a little extra time, a few circular swipes of a good body scrub can seriously transform the look and feel of your skin. Why? Because the best ones don't just slough away dead skin cells—they soften rough patches, boost glow, and make everything you layer on afterward (think: moisturizers, self-tanners, serums) work better. In other words, they're the shortcut to smoother, glowier skin with surprisingly little effort. According to board-certified dermatologist and co-creator of Keys Soulcare, Dr. Renee Snyder, the older we get, the more important it is to use these powerful products. 'As we age, our skin's natural desquamation process—the shedding of dead skin cells—begins to slow down. This means old, dull cells linger on the surface longer than they should,' she explains. 'Add that to the buildup of everyday products like sunscreen, bronzers, or self-tanners, and you develop clogged pores, rough texture, and ingrown hairs.' By gently removing that layer, you not only reveal smoother, more radiant skin, but also help prevent trapped hairs and congestion. Whether you're looking for a gritty physical exfoliant or a chemical formula powered by AHAs, adding a scrub to your full-body care routine is one of the simplest ways to keep your skin fresh, balanced, and genuinely healthy. To determine which scrubs are worth making room for in your shower, I tested top picks, consulted Dr. Snyder for her go-tos, and scoured dozens of reviews. Scroll ahead for the 13 best body scrubs. Nécessaire's The Body Exfoliator checks every box: physical exfoliation, chemical exfoliation, keratosis pilaris (KP) prevention, and a hypoallergenic, yet fragranced formula. Volcanic pumice provides the grit, while AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs work to smooth textured skin, treat KP, and prevent ingrown hairs. Key ingredients: Salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, volcanic pumice When to use: In the shower Amazon rating: 4.4/5 An Amazon reviewer says: 'I've repurchased this about 3 or 4 times at this point. Such a good product, it smells great, a great physical and chemical exfoliant. My skin is immediately softer after using this. The charcoal exfoliation is not too harsh but enough as someone who has very mild ingrown hairs/bumps on the back of my lower arm/near my elbow. Great product to use all over before shaving. You don't need to use a lot to be able to get a good amount of exfoliation.' This body scrub is essentially a spa experience in a jar. Designed for application on dry skin, the Tata Harper Smoothing Body Scrub utilizes five sources of exfoliation to gently micro-polish your skin. It's also packed with organic ingredients sourced straight from the brand's farm that hydrate your skin and promote a silky-smooth and ultra-glowy finish. Key ingredients: Organic raw sugar, Himalayan pink salt, Hawaiian salt, cranberry seed fibers, argan oil When to use: Outside the shower Tata Harper rating: 4.9/5 A Tata Harper reviewer says: 'Love the way this feels without leaving an oily residue as many scrubs do—just makes your skin feel really clean and soft.' When it comes to body care, the scalp is often forgotten. But the truth is, the skin on your head deserves just as much attention as the rest of your body. Ouai makes it easy with their sugar scrub formulated for both the scalp and body. It's color-safe, deep-cleansing, and sulfate-free—ideal for all hair and skin types. Key ingredients: Sugar crystals, glycerin, panthenol, coconut oil Sephora rating: 4.5/5 A Sephora reviewer says: 'This scrub feels like a facial for the scalp and body! I have an oily scalp and skin and I easily get product buildup on both, and this scrub delivers an intense deep cleanse without stripping my hair or skin! My scalp and body feel squeaky clean and healthy! It also smells like a spa in a jar, which just enhances the experience soooo much! Definitely recommend!' 'The Be Luminous Exfoliator from Keys Soulcare is by far my favorite exfoliator,' says Dr. Snyder. 'I love how it transforms with water into a gentle, effervescent polish.' A blend of hojicha powder, green tea antioxidants, and soothing oats delivers a boost of hydration and protection, leaving skin radiant and refreshed. Key ingredients: Lactic acid, kaolin, hojicha powder, mung bean When to use: Inside or outside the shower Amazon rating: 4.6/5 An Amazon reviewer says: 'This is a superb product. It works wonders on your skin and, unlike other exfoliators, this will not break you out. It's very gentle and does not strip all of the natural oils out of your skin, but it will leave you squeaky clean. I highly recommend this.' Another favorite of Dr. Snyder's, the Osea Salts of the Earth Body Scrub uses mineral-rich salts to buff away dry patches, while gigartina seaweed and shea butter nourish and moisturize. After just one use, your skin will feel baby-smooth. Key ingredients: Mineral salt blend, gigartina seaweed, shea butter, lavender oil Amazon rating: 4.3/5 An Amazon reviewer says: 'My absolute favorite body scrub. This is the first body scrub I've used that leaves my skin noticeably softer immediately after use. It smells amazing and reminds me of that spa-like scent. 100 percent recommend.' Keratosis pilaris—those pesky little bumps often found on arms—can be quite tricky to treat. That's why First Aid Beauty's KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub has a loyal following. Even Dr. Snyder uses it, sharing, 'I reach for it whenever my arms need it. Key ingredients: Pumice beads, glycolic acid, lactic acid, bisabolol Sephora rating: 4.3/5 An ELLE editor says: 'I may not struggle with KP, but I do face eczema on my arms every now and then. I can always count on the First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub to buff out my rough patches for smooth, soft arms.'—Emma Aerin Becker, associate beauty e-commerce writer When you slough off dead, dry skin with a body scrub, the fresh layer underneath often craves moisture. The Josie Maran Sugar and Argan Oil Body Scrub ensures your skin is both smooth and bright, thanks to its exfoliating sugar crystals and nourishing argan oil. Key ingredients: Sugar crystals, argan oil, shea butter When to use: Post-shower on damp skin Sephora rating: 4.6/5A Sephora reviewer says: 'This gentle exfoliador makes my skin feel super soft and moisturized. I particularly enjoy how the argan oil makes my skin feel after I rinse off the scrub. I highly recommend this product for anyone looking for small luxuries' If you want silky-smooth skin and to smell like a freshly baked cookie, let me introduce you to the Dove Brown Sugar and Coconut Butter Body Scrub. The recently-released product has a unique whipped texture that exfoliates and moisturizes as you scrub. And if coconut isn't your favorite fragrance, there's seven more delicious scents available. Key ingredients: Brown sugar, coconut oil, ¼ moisturizing cream Amazon rating: 4.7/5 An Amazon reviewer says: 'I recently tried the Dove Brown Sugar and Coconut Butter Body Scrub and it's quickly become one of my favorite skincare products! The texture is rich and creamy with just the right amount of exfoliation—it's not too harsh, but it leaves my skin feeling incredibly smooth and refreshed. The scent is amazing—sweet, warm, and comforting, like a tropical dessert. It lingers on the skin without being overpowering. After using it, my skin feels deeply nourished, soft to the touch, and has a healthy glow. I also love that it doesn't leave a greasy residue in the shower like some other scrubs do. A little goes a long way' Powered by powdered bamboo stem, apricot seed, and essential oils, the Yonka Gommage Doux Silhouette is a creamy exfoliator that easily erases dead skin cells. Simultaneously, it hydrates with sesame seed oil, mango seed butter, and glycerin. However, it has unique cellulite control that helps firm and lift the skin. Key ingredients: Sesame seed oil, mango seed butter, vegetal glycerin, powdered bamboo stem, apricot seed When to use: Outside shower on damp or dry skin Yonka rating: 4.8/5 A Yonka reviewer says: 'I have used this a hand full of times now and I think it's a great product! I use it twice a week, a little goes a long way. It smells great and leaves my skin feeling smooth!' Even those with sensitive skin can benefit from a body scrub. The Nopalera Cactus Flower Exfoliant stands out mainly because it's grittier than others on this list and melts quickly into the skin for gentle exfoliation. Key ingredients: Safflower seed oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, nopal, tangerine oil When to use: Outside shower Nordstrom rating: 4.7/5 A Nordstrom reviewer says: 'Heard lots about Nopalera and the founder Sandra Velasquez so I could not wait to try it. Truly amazing product. I applied it from head to toe and was pleasantly surprised on how moisturizing it was and how well it penetrated even after drying off and no need to apply lotion. The glow was a bonus as my collar bone, shoulders and arms felt and looked amazing! It truly felt like a spa experience in a jar! The tangerine scent is mild and perfection for those of us who don't like heavy scents. This is a keeper!!' Formulated with physical exfoliators like pumice and jojoba esters, as well as AHA, BHA, and PHA chemical exfoliants, Naturium's KP Body Scrub & Mask instantly eliminates bumpy, dry, rough, and dull skin. When applied as a mask, your skin will not only feel smoother but also look brighter and more even. Key ingredients: Pumice, Glycerin, Jojoba Seed Oil, Squalane, Glycolic Acid, Stearic Acid Ulta rating: 4.5/5 An Ulta reviewer says: 'New holy grail. After spending $30+ on other 8oz KP scrubs for years, I bought this on a whim due to the price point. Glad I did because I love it. It really doesn't have a scent and is gentle enough to use on my legs, without compromising the effectiveness of physical exfoliation & KP treatment. I also love that I can let it sit on my skin as a mask in the shower.' If you're a fan of Sol de Janero's iconic Bum Bum Cream, then you have to try the brand's Bum Bum Body Scrub. It's an ultra-fine body scrub that uses a blend of cupuaçu seeds, sugar crystals, and caffeine-rich guaraná to gently exfoliate. Meanwhile, coconut oil provides deep hydration, and the beloved Cheirosa 62 fragrance leaves you smelling fresh all day long. Key ingredients: Cupuaçu seeds, sugar crystals, caffeine-rich guaraná, coconut oil Sephora rating: 4.1/5 A Sephora reviewer says: 'Love it! The smell is so good and it's just the right amount of scrubby. Plus, it doesn't leave the floor of the shower feeling slimy and slippery like some other scrubs.' Dr. Renee Snyder is a board-certified dermatologist and the co-creator of Keys Soulcare. How often you exfoliate depends on your skin type, according to Dr. Snyder. For most, once or twice a week is the sweet spot—frequent enough to keep skin smooth without compromising your barrier. If you have sensitive skin, start with once every 10 days and adjust based on how your skin responds. Those with thicker or oilier skin, or rougher areas like elbows and knees, can benefit from exfoliating two to three times a week. Dr. Snyder adds that the 'most critical step' is to 'immediately replenish your skin's barrier and infuse it with antioxidants using a body lotion.' She recommends Keys Soulcare's Sacred Body Lotion because it's enriched with chia seed oil, allantoin, and shea butter to deliver silky, fast-absorbing hydration and lock in essential moisture. As a leading publisher of fashion, lifestyle, and beauty content, is committed to highlighting the best products in various categories by personally testing the latest and most innovative products, interviewing countless experts, and vetting customer-loved items. Glossier CEO Kyle Leahy to Exit
Kyle Leahy will leave her role as Glossier's chief executive officer by the end of 2025, a representative for the brand confirmed on Tuesday. Succeeding founder Emily Weiss as chief executive in 2022, Leahy oversaw the brand's expansion into Sephora and the opening of new standalone retail stores, as well as launches at global retailers amid pressure on the direct-to-consumer model that Glossier pioneered in the 2010s. Leahy also oversaw the growth of the brand's successful fragrance franchise; previously offering a single perfume called 'You,' the range was expanded under Leahy's tenure to including new scents and categories such as body mists. Other executive departures in the past year have included former chief commercial officer Chitra Balireddi, who is now the the chief executive officer of Nécessaire, creative director Marie Suter, who left to start a creative agency, deputy creative director Adriana Deleo and chief marketing officer Kleo Mack, who now holds the same role at hair tools brand Shark. Leahy will remain in her board seat through 2026, and will work with the board to identify a successor. Learn more: Glossier Needs More Than 'You' to Grow The 11 year-old beauty brand has seen success with its fragrance franchise — which adds a new scent, Fleur, this month — but is focused on building multiple categories to broaden its appeal.

I'm strict about skin care. Here are 10 of my favorite essentials from Credo's rare sale
For those who prefer smaller brands or more tailored shopping experiences than mega retailers in the beauty and skin care space, consider buying from the cruelty-free beauty brand, Credo. It takes clean beauty seriously and vets its products for safety, has strict sustainable packaging guidelines for its partners, analyzes the treatment of folks in the supply chain to ensure ethical practices and lastly, monitors its impact on the planet. As someone who has dealt with acne since my tween years, finding products that agree with my skin has been no easy feat. I've often avoided wearing makeup because of my hormonal flareups and dry patches, but after coming across cleaner options from Ilia, Tower 28 and Nécessaire, I've learned how to feel more confident in my skin. Luckily, Credo is hosting its Friends of Credo Sale, marking its entire site down by 20% through May 4. Many of the picks below have been in my current lineup for years, and I've thrown in a few extra deals on beauty gadgets, body products and sunscreens that I'm adding to cart ahead of summer. Tower 28 LipSoftie Hydrating Tinted Lip Treatment Balm I once resorted to mixing my trusty Aquaphor with a lip tint. After getting my hands on the Red Bean Mochi shade, I haven't touched my other lip products in months, and my lips stay hydrated sans a white film. The AAPI-founded brand also happens to make a ton of other editor-favorite beauty products. Ilia Multi-Stick No matter the season it is, I like to keep a few different shades of the Multi-Stick to wear on my eyelids, cheeks and lips. Its bronzy In The City color is my go-to summer pigment, while Whisper is my everyday favorite for flushed-looking cheeks. Nécessaire The Body Wash in Hinoki Usually, I'm a drugstore truther when it comes to body washes. I like to find a cheaper alternative, or at least something with a similar scent. When it comes to Nécessaire, this Hinoki wash is one-of-a-kind, and I always stock up when it's marked down. DedCool Fragrance 01 Taunt My first introduction to DedCool's genderless fragrances was in laundry detergent form. I was gifted Dedtergent 01 and quickly became obsessed with fresh clothing out of the dryer smelling of its bergamot and vanilla. Now the skin scent is down to a sweet $72 in its full 1.7-ounce size. Grown Alchemist Polishing Exfoliator Say goodbye to dead skin with this underrated body exfoliator that makes arms, legs and more feel soft. It's gentle enough to use daily and is great to have on hand for helping achieve close shaves and streak-free sunless tans. Westman Atelier Vital Skincare Complexion Drops This lightweight tinted moisturizer helps even out skin tones and improves skin texture with firming tsubaki oil and brightening ginseng. An alternative to high-coverage foundations, its sheer, hydrating formula is great for no-makeup makeup looks. Kinfield Sunglow SPF 35 Luminizing Sunscreen SPF should be regularly stocked in your vanity, but if you've been lacking, this shimmery face sunscreen from Kinfield is down to $22. It gives off a subtle post-beach glow and even doubles as a highlighter. Doré Le Glaçon Facial Ice Roller Ice rolling is something I've incorporated into my routine as a way to relax and feel more grounded in my body. This tool from Doré helps calm skin, increases blood flow and reduces puffiness. The matte handle is easy to hold, and I love that the head is created from high-quality stainless steel. Does Necessaire's aluminum free deodorant actually work? I put it to the test
As someone who tests beauty products for a living, I've tried to become more mindful of the ingredients I put on my body in the name of healthy skin. While it's been relatively seamless finding an aluminum-free yet still efficacious alternative for things like facial cleanser and body lotion, one product type I have yet to find an effective replacement for is deodorant. I'm a fitness enthusiast and not one to mess around with deodorant. I require high-performing, extra-strength formulas that keep me from stinking up my reformer Pilates class or hiding from my fellow gym-goers. I'm also on a journey to wear more thoughtfully formulated beauty products and have tried several aluminum-free deodorants to no avail. Thus far, I haven't been able to find a formula that truly keeps body odors out. Recently, though, Nécessaire sent me their latest addition to their body care lineup, a mandelic acid deodorant, and I set out to test it out for 30 days. Below, I'll share my experience using the product, including its ingredients, who it's best for and how it performs. What is Nécessaire's The Deodorant? Nécessaire The Deodorant Nécessaire's deodorant is an aluminum-free, $22 formula that's designed to control odor for up to 72 hours without aluminum, PEGs and parabens. This isn't the brand's first foray into deodorants — their deodorant gel is a roll-on formula that you can use on the entire body including the underarms. The new formula is solid and uses sunflower wax, a vegan alternative to beeswax, that helps give the deodorant its solid form. Like the deodorant gel, The Deodorant is made with vitamin B3 and B5 as well as AHA 's like mandelic and lactic acid (versus other odor-reducing agents like aluminum or baking soda). (AHAs, also known as alpha-hydroxy acids, support exfoliation and skin renewal.) The formula comes in four scents (including fragrance-free), and because it's hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, it's suitable for sensitive skin types. Aside from odor protection, this formula is also meant to reduce the risk of razor bumps (a plus if you shave your underarms), according to Necessaire. How I tried the Nécessaire deodorant I put the deodorant through the wringer, to say the least. I exercise four to five days a week and switch things up regularly, so over the course of 30 days, this deodorant accompanied me to a range of workouts including Pilates (both reformer and mat), weight training, treadmill, stairmaster, yoga and even a hot sculpting class. I also used it on non-workout days to see how it fared in my everyday life while running errands, working from a coffee shop and going to dinner with friends. I wore it with dark-colored clothing and different fabric types to see if it would stain. Also, because I I traveled a bit this month, I was able to see how it performed in a variety of weather conditions including rainy and gloomy as well as sunny and dry. During the testing period, I used the deodorant daily, swiping it on two to three times under both underarms. I used it the way I would my traditional deodorant, which is before I leave my house and after each shower (unless I went straight to bed after showering). All in all, the core factors I was looking at while testing were odor control, absorption and ease of use. My experience with the Nécessaire Deodorant I love everything Nécessaire does when it comes to packaging, and this deodorant is no different. The bottle is sleek, chic and looks cute on my bathroom counter. It's also small enough to tote around in my gym bag. If I really had to pinpoint something I'd change about the product, I'd say I would have preferred for it to have a snap-on snap-off cap rather than one I have to twist on and off. Overall, it's easy — and enjoyable — to use and I like the fact that it liquifies upon application (almost like a serum), but that it dried in the same amount of time it took me to lay out my clothes. What I like Effective scent masking This deodorant scored high marks in all categories I tested it for. Most importantly, I looked at odor control, which is a qualm I have with other 'clean' deodorants. This deodorant is the only aluminum-free formula I've tried that's been able to successfully mask all odors no matter what my day calls for, which is especially impressive considering I tested the fragrance-free version. To be clear, this isn't an antiperspirant, so it doesn't stop me from actually sweating. What it does do is ensure I don't walk out of a workout class (or go throughout my day) smelling like B.O. On low-intensity exercise days, I didn't feel the need to rush home and take a shower — in fact, I felt comfortable going straight from my workout to a meeting or brunch without the fear of smelling unpleasant. Even on days I did high-intensity workouts (like a 95-degree heated sculpt class), I was able to walk out without a stench. Quick-absorbing In terms of absorption, the formula settled quickly into my skin, and because it's a solid stick format, I didn't have to wait for it to absorb before getting dressed (like I would with a gel or spray). The consistency is as if I took a liquid serum and solidified it — for this reason, it swipes on super easily. Unlike other deodorants I've tried, it doesn't leave behind a powdery or sticky residue. Great for sensitive skin What I love most about this formula aside from its ability to control my odors is the fact that it does so without aluminum, which has been studied to be a potential carcinogen, and parabens, which have been shown to mimic the effects of estrogen, potentially interfering with the body's hormone balance and raising concerns about breast cancer risk. Instead, its gentle formula keeps my sensitive skin happy and non-irritated. I don't shave my underarms because I did laser hair removal years ago, but on the few occasions I shaved any stragglers with a razor, the deodorant didn't sting or cause redness. Alluring scents As with all things Necessaire, this deodorant has a few options when it comes to scents. Aside from fragrance-free, there's Eucalyptus, an earthy blend of essential eucalyptus oil and fragrance notes of lavender, Siberian fur and ginger. Olibanum is on the warmer side and presents essential sandalwood oil with vanilla, black currant and fig leaf. For those who prefer something a bit more woodsy, Santal fuses essential sandalwood oil with notes of black pepper, iris and jasmine. I tried both the unscented and Olibanum, and the latter was definitely my favorite. I was shocked to see that it lingered on my skin the entire day and completely masked my body odor — to the point where I didn't feel the need to wear a fragrance on days I wore it. Potential drawbacks to keep in mind It requires reapplication One reason why I've been against natural deodorants is that most formulas give me that 'wet' underarm feeling after about an hour of wear — they make me feel like I'm sweating and, in turn, make me smell since they don't effectively cover up odors. With Nécessaire's deodorant, my underarms don't feel wet until about hour five, which is when I find myself needing to reapply. Even with the wetness, though, I don't smell of B.O — something other formulas have not been able to achieve. It stains a bit Like most deodorants, this one isn't stain-free. This formula left white marks on a black sports bra (but keep in mind that's also the day I was dripping in sweat from the hot sculpting class). That said, the stains came out with a few swipes of a wipe. Other than that, the deodorant played well with light-colored clothing and all types of fabrics including knitwear and cotton. Who is Nécessaire's deodorant best for? Nécessaire's deodorant is best for those looking to be more mindful of the ingredients in their personal care products. It's great for those with sensitivities to harsher chemicals found in traditional deodorants. Also, because the scents are so powerful, this may be a good formula for those seeking a multi-functional deodorant that takes the place of a fragrance. When it comes to pricing, at $22 for 2.5 ounces of product, it's more costly than other natural deodorants on the market like the Native Deodorant ($13) or the Curie Aluminum Free Deodorant Stick ($15), though it's formulated with mandelic acid to help cover up odors. If you're looking for a formula that has additional skin benefits beyond masking body odor, Salt & Stone's Santal & Vetiver Extra-Strength Aluminum-Free Deodorant ($20) is another option that's similar in terms of its branding, scent profiles, price and ingredients.
