Court docs show how a store loyalty account led police to a reckless homicide arrest
An O'Reilly Auto Parts loyalty account helped lead police to the man accused of a fatal hit-and-run within days of the crash, according to an affidavit filed by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. At about 9:15 p.m. on May 7, the driver of a Dodge Charger ran a red light and struck a Honda Civic at the intersection of South State Avenue and East Raymond Street. One or both cars then hit a bicyclist towing a child in a small passenger trailer. The child, Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia, died in the crash, and two adults were critically injured. The Charger's driver ran away. A data recorder recovered from the Charger showed the car was traveling 80 mph less than a second before the collision. The speed limit at the intersection is 40 mph. Police searched the area for hours using dogs and drones, but could not find the driver. The Charger's registered owner lived less than a mile away from the crash site, but told investigators he'd sold the car on Facebook. The car was still in his name, and mail addressed to him was found inside. Forensic scientists took fingerprints along with other evidence from the car. Detectives noticed a box of brake parts on the passenger's seat. There was also a receipt from an O'Reilly Auto Parts store about 2 miles from the crash site. Surveillance footage from O'Reilly showed a man who wasn't the car's registered owner buying the brake parts at 9:10 p.m. on May 7, about five minutes before the crash. At checkout, he gave the cashier his phone number for his store loyalty account. That account was tied to the man's full name. A second, higher-quality rendering of the same footage clearly showed the man's face, which an investigator "immediately recognized" from his BMV photo. The brake parts weren't compatible with the Charger, but they would work for a different car registered under the man's name, investigators wrote in a charging document. A search of the man's social media profiles showed that he was Facebook friends with the car's registered owner. On May 14, IMPD announced the man's arrest on charges of reckless homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, leaving the scene of an accident causing catastrophic injuries and leaving the scene of the crash causing serious bodily injury. A sample of his DNA was collected. IndyStar is not naming the driver because formal charges were not filed at the time of publication. A final charging decision will be made by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

O'Reilly Auto Parts lays off portion of IT staff in effort to 'modernize,' align skills Show Caption Hide Caption FDA will reduce food and drug inspections due to federal layoffs FDA scales back routine inspections due to support staff layoffs, prioritizing high-risk cases amid government restructuring and budget cuts. Straight Arrow News O'Reilly Auto Parts laid off under 11% of its IT staff as part of a modernization effort. The Springfield, Missouri-based company says the layoffs aren't related to cost-cutting but rather to realigning skills for future projects. Affected employees received severance packages and will be considered for other open positions. Staff within the O'Reilly Auto Parts information technology department have been laid off. Social media posts made by current and former O'Reilly IT staff estimated the layoffs affected more than 100 employees. In an emailed statement April 24, Public Relations Director Sonya Kullmann Cox said less than 11% of the IT team was laid off in order to "modernize [the company's] IT solutions and structures" and align skills of the employees with the work ahead. "We recognize that the impact to the individuals affected and their families is significant, and we appreciate their past service to the company," Kullman Cox said in the email. More on job cuts: Intel CEO alludes to layoffs as tech giant loses $821 million in Q1 She said most of the affected employees worked outside of the Springfield, Missouri metro area. The employees were given severance based on their position and years of service, as well as extended health care coverage. Kullman Cox said if interested, they will be considered for other positions within the company or will be assisted with outplacement services. "This was not an effort to cut the size of our team or reduce expenses," she said. "O'Reilly will be recruiting individuals who have specific IT skills and experience needed for the work ahead." According to an April 23 news release, the company reported steady growth during the first quarter of the year. While expenses increased and net income decreased by 8% and 2%, respectively, sales and gross profit both increased by 4% compared to the same period a year ago. The O'Reilly careers website showed 23 open positions under the IT category as of 11:30 a.m. April 29. In September, the U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party sent a letter to U.S. auto parts firms, including O'Reilly, with concerns that the companies were evading tariffs by transshipping products made in China, by Qingdao Sunsong, through Thailand. Through the letter, the committee warned auto parts retailers that knowingly purchasing unlawfully transshipped products could face serious consequences and requested answers to several questions in regard to the companies' dealing with the China-based manufacturer.
