'No excuses' for Tyrone in Mayo loss - O'Rourke

Tyrone manager Malachy O'Rourke felt his side did not "get to the pitch of the game" in their 2-17 to 1-13 defeat by Mayo. Coming into the All-Ireland round-robin contest off an impressive win over Ulster champions Donegal seven days prior, the Red Hands found themselves 1-9 to 0-4 down at half-time. Advertisement Although they would cut the deficit to a point in the second half, Mayo, under the charge of Stephen Rochford after Kevin McStay stepped away for health reasons, pulled away to bounce back from their opening-round loss to Cavan. "We'd a great win last week and we came here knowing, after the disappointment of the Cavan game, Mayo would be coming here with real hunger," said O'Rourke. "We knew we'd have to meet that head on and I suppose that's the most disappointing thing, we felt in the first half we didn't get to the pitch of the game. "We were a bit flat and left ourselves with a lot to do. In fairness to the boys, we dug in well, we got it back to a point but we made too many mistakes, we weren't playing well enough and Mayo deserved the victory. We've no excuses." Advertisement While Tyrone were in action on consecutive weekends, Mayo had a week's break from their last outing, although O'Rourke did not feel that was the telling reason for his side's flat performance. "There's no doubt that the week turnaround is very small and it could have some effect, but we're not using that as an excuse either," he added. "We knew what the story was, we knew exactly what Mayo would bring and we were hoping we'd be able to meet that and get another really good performance. "For all of us in the changing room, we didn't get to the level that we need to get to and the level we expect of ourselves." Tyrone will conclude their round-robin action against Cavan at a neutral venue during the weekend of 14/15 June.

Marsh's century earns Lucknow a 33-run win over IPL-leading Gujarat

AHMEDABAD, India (AP) — Mitchell Marsh's maiden Indian Premier League hundred helped Lucknow Super Giants end their four-match losing streak with a 33-run victory over Gujarat Titans on Thursday. Gujarat, which tops the table with 18 points, could still finish among top two with a win in the last league game against Chennai Super Kings. Marsh's 117 off 64 balls propelled Lucknow to 235-2 with Nicholas Pooran hitting an unbeaten 56 off 27 balls on a black-soil wicket in Ahmedabad. Tall New Zealand fast bowler Will O'Rourke picked up 3-27 as Gujarat was restricted to 202-9. Shahrukh Khan top-scored with 57 off 29 balls, but he got little support from the other end in pursuit of a tall target. Lucknow was already out of contention for the playoffs. Along with Gujarat, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians are the other teams that have qualified for the playoffs. O'Rourke ties down Gujarat O'Rourke had the key wicket of Sai Sudharsan (21) inside the batting powerplay when Aiden Markram took a fine low catch at mid-off. But Jos Buttler gave the chase momentum when he smashed Avesh Khan for 4-6-6-4 as Gujarat finished the powerplay at 67-1. Captain Shubman Gill hit seven boundaries in his 35-run knock, but Abdul Samad sprinted sideways at long-off and completed a diving catch to bring back Lucknow in the game in the eighth over. Left-arm fast bowler Akash Singh, who split his right hand webbing while stopping Gill's hard drive, returned with his injured hand heavily strapped and clean bowled Buttler off a slower delivery. Lucknow struggled in the middle overs in the absence of its leading wicket-taker Digvesh Rathi, who was suspended for one game for his notebook celebration against Abhishek Sharma in the last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sherfane Rutherford (38) and Shahrukh shared an 86-run stand and brought down the target to 54 off the final four overs. But O'Rourke struck twice and removed Rutherford and Rahul Tewatia, and Ayush Badoni picked up two wickets in the final over to hand Gujarat only its second home defeat this season. Marsh marvels Marsh and Markram (36) had been Lucknow's batting mainstay this season and once again provided a rollicking 91-run start off 59 balls after Gill won the toss and elected to field. Gill held back ace leg-spinner Rashid Khan and got the breakthrough from left-arm spinner Sai Kishore when Markram was caught on the edge of boundary at long-off. But Marsh upped the ante with his brutal hitting against Rashid when the Afghan spinner's first over went for 25 runs that featured two sixes and three boundaries from the Australian batter. Marsh added another brisk 121 off just 52 balls with Pooran and brought his century off 56 balls — only his second in T20 cricket and first in the IPL. Marsh fell in the penultimate when Rutherford dived forward at deep backward point as Marsh couldn't clear fast bowler Arshad Khan's length ball. Captain Rishabh Pant (16 not out), who had a struggling season with the bat that featured seven single-digit scores, hit two sixes from the six balls he faced as Lucknow ended strongly. ___

Marsh ton powers Lucknow to IPL upset over Gujarat

Marsh smashed 117 off 64 balls studded with 10 fours and eight sixes to help Lucknow post a formidable 235-2 off 20 overs. Gujarat, who have already qualified for the playoffs, could only make 202-9 in reply at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. "We gave 15-20 runs extra. If we'd stopped them at 210-220 it would've been better, that was a huge difference," said Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill. "Getting momentum back will be key in the next game." Lucknow were playing for pride after being eliminated from the playoffs. Gujarat lost in-form opener and the tournament's highest run-getter Sai Sudharsan for 21, caught by Aiden Markram off Will O'Rourke, who ended with figures of 3-27. Sudharsan's opening partner Gill looked in good touch before he was caught in the deep by Abdul Samad off Avesh Khan for 35. Jos Buttler (33) tried to steady the innings but was dismissed by Akash Singh in the 10th over. Shahrukh Khan (57) and Sherfane Rutherford (38) revived hopes of a comeback but O'Rourke took two wickets in the 17th over to seal Gujarat's fate. "We had a lot of fun out there, T20 is fickle," said O'Rourke. Earlier, Marsh combined with Markram to give Lucknow a steady start, putting on 91 runs for the opening wicket after Gujarat won the toss and elected to bowl. Markram (36) hit fellow South African Kagiso Rabada for two sixes in a row before being caught by Shahrukh near the boundary off Sai Kishore. Marsh continued his onslaught at the other end, hitting Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan for 25 runs in his first over of the game. The right-hander, who raced to his century off just 56 balls, was finally caught by a diving Rutherford off paceman Arshad Khan for 117. Nicholas Pooran also impressed, making an unbeaten 56 runs off 27 balls with four fours and five sixes. Lucknow's struggling skipper Rishabh Pant made 16 not out.

US stock futures down after Moody's cuts US credit rating

At 6:10 a.m. ET, futures linked to the blue-chip Dow slipped -0.84%, while broad S&P 500 futures dropped -1.25% and tech-heavy Nasdaq futures fell -1.65%. Moody's was the last of the three major ratings agencies to downgrad the U.S. Fitch Ratings downgraded its U.S. credit rating to AA+ from AAA in 2023. Standard & Poor's downgraded the nation's credit rating in 2011. "We will start by stating, undoubtedly, that U.S. Treasuries remain the most secure credit in the world," said Mike O'Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading. "Of course, we agree with most observers that the U.S. fiscal state is on an unsustainable course. It should concern everyone that U.S. federal debt outstanding is 125% of GDP, but one needs to keep the situation in perspective. Japan hit these levels two decades ago." Japan's government debt outstanding now exceeds 200% of gross domestic product, and its 10-year yield is much lower than Treasuries, he noted. Trade worries linger Ongoing economic uncertainty will likely keep driving markets outside of the very immediate term effect from the Moody's downgrade, O'Rourke said, On Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said tarff rates could go back to the aggressive levels that were announced on April 2 if countries don't negotiate in good faith with the U.S. "Some countries were at 10%, some were substantially higher," he said on Meet the Press. "And the negotiating leverage that President Trump is talking about here is: if you don't want to negotiate, then it will spring back to the April 2nd level."
