Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's omission from ICC ODI rankings sparks confusion; what does the rulebook say? Explained
In a significant development, the names of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are missing from the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI Rankings for batters, released on Wednesday, thus sparking confusion among the fans. The Indian batting stalwarts have retired from Tests and T20Is but are still active cricketers in ODIs, having last played in the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025. Both Rohit and Virat were listed in the ICC ODI rankings for batters at no.2 and 4, respectively, with Indian Shubman Gill taking the top spot. However, as of the latest rankings that were updated on August 19, neither of them features in the top 100. In fact, Rohit even dethroned Pakistan's Babar Azam last week, after the latter's poor show in the Caribbean. As of August 20, Babar has regained his second spot, while Kohli's fourth spot went to Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka. New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell is third. While the ICC is yet to officially speak out on the matter, it is believed to be a technical glitch that has created confusion among the fans. According to the ICC rules on rankings, a player is removed from the list if he or she has retired from the particular format or completely from international cricket. One won't find the names of Virat and Rohit in ICC Test and T20I rankings for batters since both have quit those formats. At the same time, a player will be removed from the top 100 in the ICC rankings if he or she has not played a Test match for 12-15 months and an ODI or a T20I for 9-12 months. Virat and Rohit last played an ODI just five months ago, in March 2025. In fact, the ICC rulebook even explained that former India captain MS Dhoni was removed from the ICC Test rankings after he retired from the longest format in 2014, but remained in the ODI rankings. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli disappear from latest ICC ODI Rankings. What happened?
File photo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Curiously, neither Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli appear in the latest ODI Rankings, issued by ICC - cricket's global body. In the latest update, August 19, neither of India's ex-captains find a spot in the top-10 rankings. In last week's update, Rohit was in the No. 2 spot with 756 points while Kohli stood in the fourth place with 736 points. Now, Shubman Gill is the leading batter in ODI rankings with 784 rating points and Shreyas Iyer in sixth on 704 points. The other Indian in the top-20 places is KL Rahul in 13th with 638 points. Latest ICC ODI Rankings, updated on August 19. (Image: ICC) Incidentally, Babar Azam, who had slipped to third in last week's rankings with Rohit taking over the second place, has now moved back beneath Gill. Neither Rohit or Kohli have played any cricket since IPL 2025 while their last appearance in India's colours came in March in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand. Do players disappear from the ICC Rankings? Yes. As per ICC's rules on rankings, a player can be removed from the top-100 spots if they've not played a match within the qualifying period - 12-15 months for Tests and 9-12 months for ODIs and T20Is. Alternatively, a player can be removed from the rankings for good if they retire from a format or completely from international cricket. ICC, in its rulebook, explains that when MS Dhoni retired from Tests in 2014, he was removed from the Test rankings, but remained in the ODI rankings. This is why Kohli and Rohit are not presented in the latest Test and T20I rankings considering they've bowed out from both formats. Both retired from the shortest format after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and from Tests in May this year. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma removed ICC ODI rankings altogether, not even in top 100
In a surprising development that has left cricket fans across the globe baffled, Indian cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been removed from the latest ICC ODI batting rankings released on Wednesday. Just a week ago, Rohit was ranked No.2 and Kohli No.4 in the world. As of the August 20 update, neither player features even in the top 100, sparking widespread speculation and confusion across social media. Virat Kohli, left, and Rohit Sharma no longer have the long rope(AFP) The sudden disappearance of the two legendary batters from the rankings comes despite the fact that both remain active in the ODI format. The move appears to be an error or technical glitch in the ICC's ranking system, as no formal retirement or inactivity clause applies to either player. Both Rohit and Kohli last played ODIs in February 2025 during the ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE, where they played pivotal roles in India's title-winning campaign. Rohit scored a match-winning knock in the final, helping India lift their first ODI ICC trophy in a decade. Kohli too was in sublime form during the group stages, anchoring the Indian innings in challenging conditions, particularly at the spin-friendly Dubai International Stadium. Until last week's update, Rohit was second only to Shubman Gill in the ICC ODI batting charts, while Kohli occupied the fourth spot with 736 rating points. With Wednesday's rankings, Babar Azam has now moved up to No.2 behind Gill, who remains the top-ranked batter with 756 points. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's removal from ICC ODI Rankings sparks speculations The abrupt removal of the two icons has led to a wave of fan reactions online, with #RohitSharma and #ViratKohli trending on X (formerly Twitter) as users speculated whether this was an oversight, a technical glitch, or a miscommunication from the ICC. The ICC has not yet released a formal statement on the matter, further fuelling the chatter. Given their active status and recent performances, the rankings are expected to be corrected in the next update. For now, however, the absence of India's most prolific ODI duo from the global charts remains a mystery.

ICC ODI Rankings: West Indies slip to 10th spot, automatic qualification for 2027 WC under risk
New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): In the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI Rankings, two-time champions West Indies have slipped out of the automatic qualification spots for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, risking another absence from the marquee tournament. The latest ICC rankings update came following Bangladesh's victory in the second ODI against Sri Lanka, where they managed to defend 248 runs at Colombo thanks to a brilliant five-wicket haul from Taijul Islam, levelling the three-match series 1-1. This win took Bangladesh a spot above to number nine in the men's ODI team rankings, as per Wisden. However, Windies could rise back to the required rankings before the cutoff date for World Cup qualification. The West Indies have now dropped to 10th spot and sit outside the automatic qualification spots for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. The 2027 edition of the tournament will witness participation from 14 teams, from which South Africa and Zimbabwe will automatically qualify as hosts. While the third host, Namibia, will not get the same privilege as they are not a full-time ICC member playing Test cricket. The top-eight teams (excluding the hosts), will qualify on basis of their ODI Rankings on March 31, 2027. The remaining four spots will be determined by a qualifier tournament consisting of 10 teams. The Men in Maroon will be aiming to avoid playing the Qualifiers, as they did the same for the 2023 edition and missed out their first World Cup since its inception in 1975, beaten by Netherlands and Sri Lanka for those two coveted spots. Elsewhere in the latest ICC ODI Rankings, Sri Lanka dropped to fifth spot after their loss, while Pakistan moved up to fourth. The ICC Champions Trophy holders India are at the top with 124 points. Second-placed Australia and third-placed New Zealand are both having 109 rating points. (ANI)
