Rs 780-crore drugs seized, 1.2k arrested for smuggling in 2 years in Noida; 17 linked to international gangs

Noida: A total of 1,269 people, 17 of whom had links with international gangs, involved in the sale and smuggling of drugs have been arrested in the district since 2023. During this period, drugs worth more than Rs 780 crore have been seized across 1,170 cases. Speaking to TOI, police commissioner Laxmi Singh outlined GB Nagar police commissionerate's efforts to effectively control the illegal trade of intoxicants, drugs, and narcotics, and take action against those involved in their trade. Along with this, 1.5kg of hashish worth about Rs 1.5 lakh, 7,134kg of ganja worth nearly Rs 17.7 crore, 572g of OGCanvas worth about Rs 24,000, 148g of cocaine worth Rs 8 lakh, over 800g of intoxicant pills worth about Rs 30,000, and 14.7kg smack worth more than Rs 2.2 crore were recovered. Around 49 vehicles were also seized," commissioner Singh said. Earlier this month, in a joint operation by SWAT and Badalpur police station team, three ganja smugglers were arrested and police recovered around 149kg of ganja, estimated to be worth about Rs 40 lakh, along with a truck, from their possession. In Oct 2024, Noida police launched 'Operation Prahar', under which drug hotspots such as educational institutions, coaching centres, and slums were identified and raids were conducted. A total of 75 arrests were made and 115kg of ganja, as well as smack and e-cigarettes were recovered across several raids. In Jan 2023, the commissionerate headquarters located in Sector 108 opened up a 'Narcotics Cell' and established a 24-hour helpline to receive anonymous tips about drug smuggling activity. The cell and helpline aid cops in obtaining information to verify smuggling-related activity, create profiles on persons of interest and understand the nexus of different gangs. They also help identify drug hotspots, and monitor and act against illegal drug supply in NCR coordinated through the dark web. Speaking on the commissionrate's future drug control plans, commissioner Singh said that their focus will be on de-addiction programmes. Police will run continuous awareness programmes to inform residents, particularly youths, of the ill effects of drugs.
