Another train sabotage attempt foiled in UP; probe underway

A potential train accident was averted late Sunday night in Bareilly district, after a group of vigilant railway staff detected tampering with track infrastructure near Dohna station. The incident marks the latest in a series of sabotage attempts across Uttar Pradesh. Senior superintendent of police Anurag Arya stated that a special team has been constituted to identify and apprehend those responsible. According to officials, the incident occurred around 11:55 pm on June 1, when the crew of the 05307 Tanakpur-Bareilly City passenger train noticed irregularities on the track and promptly halted the train. On inspection, they discovered that miscreants had stuffed ballast, the crushed stones used to stabilise railway tracks between the tongue rail and stock rail, effectively jamming the point mechanism, which guides trains safely between tracks. Additionally, the earthing plate, a vital component connecting the Overhead Equipment (OHE) to the Switch Expansion Joint Rail (SWJR), was found bent. The SWJR is critical for allowing rails to expand and contract with temperature variations while maintaining track integrity. Station master Bhupinder Arora of Dohna reported the sabotage to higher authorities via a memo. The Izzatnagar division of North Eastern Railway confirmed the incident and lodged an FIR at Bhojipura station under Section 150 of the Indian Railway Act, which deals with malicious acts intended to wreck trains. This latest attempt is part of a disturbing trend in the region. On May 31, loco-pilots of the 64021 Delhi–Shamli MEMU train narrowly avoided a mishap when they spotted an iron pipe, ballast, and broken concrete obstructing the tracks near Shamli station. Similarly, on the night of May 29–30, ballast was found on the tracks between Bheerpur and Meja Road in Prayagraj, targeting the New Delhi–Bhubaneswar Tejas Rajdhani Express (22824). Earlier on May 19, two more sabotage attempts were reported near Dalelnagar and Umar Tali stations in Hardoi district, where wooden logs were placed on the tracks to derail the Delhi–Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express (20504) and Kathgodam Express (15044).

Karnataka rains: Fallen tree affects train traffic from Mangaluru Central towards Kerala for over six hours

A huge tree that fell on the Mangaluru Central-Shoranur line between Central and Netravathi Cabin near Marnamikatte in Mangaluru city affected train traffic in the region for over five hours on Friday (May 30, 2025) early morning. The line was restored by around 10.30 a.m. following which train operations towards Kerala resumed albeit with a huge backlog. While heavy rains inundated the circulating area and adjoining places at Mangaluru Central early in the morning, the tree that fell on the track damaging the Railway Overhead Equipment (OHE) and bringing down a few electricity poles, disrupted the traffic soon after. Southern Railway's Palakkad Division immediately deployed railwaymen to remove the fallen tree and restore the OHE. Two OHE repair vans were deployed to restore the railway electrification lines. The Mangaluru Central-Mangaluru Junction line (single line), however, was not impacted by the tree fall. As such, the Railways diverted a few Kerala-bound trains from Mangaluru Central via Mangaluru Junction, including the Mangaluru Central-Kanniyakumari Parasuram Express, the Mangaluru Central-Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express, the Mangaluru Central-Thiruvananthapuram Ernad Express and others. The KSR Bengaluru-Kannur overnight express and the SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar overnight express skipped Mangaluru Central and moved directly towards Kannur and Murdeshwar respectively from Mangaluru Junction. Several trains from Kerala to Mangaluru too were running late following incidents of tree fall in Thiruvananthapuram Division. Consequently, the Railways has been rescheduling many trains. Mumbai weather: city gets light rain, more showers and thunderstorms in next 2 days, says IMD

Mumbai woke up to light showers and overcast skies Wednesday morning, after gusty winds coupled with spells of moderate showers and thunder activity lashed the city and its neighbouring districts like Thane, late on Tuesday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Mumbai Metropolitan region is slated to experience rain and thunderstorms over at least the next two days, with a yellow alert sounded in Mumbai until Thursday morning at least. IMD has also issued a nowcast warning of light rain in isolated pockets of the Mumbai district over the next 3 to 4 days. Data furnished by the weather bureau showed that IMD's Santacruz observatory and Colaba coastal station Tuesday logged a maximum temperature of 34 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature also touched 29 degree Celsius — more than two degrees above the normal — Tuesday morning. After reeling under above normal temperatures throughout the day, Mumbai saw a respite as gusty winds swept several pockets of the city Tuesday night. Many pockets of the island city, as well as the eastern and western suburbs ranging from Dahisar to Andheri, Powai, and Lalbaug, were amongst other places which witnessed gusty winds, followed by thunder activity and lightning. Soon after, spells of moderate rainfall lashed across the city and neighbouring districts like Thane. After the rain Tuesday night, suburban train services and traffic took a hit, with services running late. According to Indian Railways officials, some local trains were temporarily regulated, held up as a piece of cloth was reported hanging over the Overhead Equipment (OHE) on the Dahisar up line. Some areas also witnessed tree collapses. Late on Tuesday, the Mumbai traffic police said traffic was impacted in Dadar after a tree collapse was reported near Agar Bazar junction. Indicating that rain activity is here to stay, IMD placed Mumbai as well as several other districts in the Konkan region under a 'yellow alert' until Thursday morning owing to the possibility of 'thunderstorms accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rainfall & gusty winds'. While no warnings have been sounded in Mumbai following Thursday, for now, meteorologists have said that the city may continue to experience cloudy skies with drizzle until Friday. Experts have attributed the unseasonal showers to a 'very strong' western disturbance system in the lower levels, which is forecast to influence the weather conditions in Konkan this week. According to IMD, Western Disturbance, which was previously over central Pakistan, is currently over West Rajasthan and the neighbourhood. In some respite from the May heat, the weather system is likely to spur a drop in temperatures by at least 2 to 3 degrees in the coming days. Besides Mumbai, isolated pockets of North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada experienced thunderstorms with hail Monday. The Konkan region is prone to recording pre-monsoon showers during April and May. Data furnished by IMD shows that in 2024, Mumbai received 21.3 mm of rainfall in May, and logged 3.4 mm of rainfall in 2023. Records also show that its wettest May was recorded in 2000, when the city received 388 mm of rainfall in the month, while its heaviest downpour in a single day was registered on May 18, 2021, when the Santacruz station logged 230 mm of rainfall.
