George Gibney arrives back in Ireland after extradition from the US
FORMER OLYMPIC SWIMMING coach George Gibney has arrived back in Ireland after an extradition from the US. It is understood he was taken to a garda station following his return. Advertisement In a statement this morning, the Garda Press Office outlined that a man in his 70s is currently being detained at a garda station in Dublin. A Garda spokesperson said the man will appear at the Criminal Courts of Justice later this morning. The man was arrested by gardaí attached to the Garda National Protective Services Bureau this morning. The division investigates allegations including sexual offences. 'Following an extradition from the United States of America at the request of the Irish authorities, a male (70s) was arrested by Gardaí attached to the Garda National Protective Services Bureau this morning, Tuesday 22nd July 2025 and is being brought before a sitting at the Criminal Courts of Justice at approximately 10:30am,' the Garda spokesperson said. Olympic champion Zheng pauses WTA Tour after elbow surgery
OLYMPIC champion Zheng Qinwen said on Saturday she would take a short break from the WTA Tour after undergoing elbow surgery. The 22-year-old Chinese player was eliminated from this year's Wimbledon tournament in the first round by Czech Katerina Siniakova earlier in July. 'Now begins the recovery journey,' she wrote on Instagram. 'Over the next few weeks and months, I'll be focusing entirely on rehab — doing everything I can to come back stronger and healthier.' She powered her way to gold in Paris last year and reached the 2024 Australian Open final. Zheng added she had arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow on Friday. Suni Lee discusses Olympic return after kidney disease diagnosis, ESPYs Comeback Athlete nomination

In April 2023, Lee announced that she was going to end her Auburn career due to a kidney issue, and Auburn doctors would not clear her. Lee gained 45 pounds, her eyes were "swollen shut," and she "couldn't do a flip." "My fingers were so swollen, they wouldn't fit into my grips, and I couldn't hold on to the bar," she said back in November 2023. "I told my coach I don't want to do this anymore… There were many times where I didn't want to do this anymore, or I just doubted myself more in the process. I think even as close as like Olympic Trials I was doubting myself," Lee said. However, after going through an incredible grind, Lee was in Paris and won three medals - the entire team won gold, and Lee herself went bronze in the all-around and uneven bars. More recently, she was nominated for, and won, the Best Comeback Athlete at the 2025 ESPYs on Wednesday night. "It is incredible, and it is such a surreal feeling just because I know how hard the journey was, so to be here is pretty incredible on its own, and I am just really excited for tonight and to be with the other nominees," Lee said. In attending the award show, she teamed up with Raising Cane's, who helped her get ready for the occasion. OLYMPIC MEDALIST DIES IN TRAGIC LIGHTNING STRIKE DURING TRIP "Oh my gosh, they have been so amazing, and they have brought me to so many amazing places as well, and having that relationship is just so fun. I feel like every time we are with them, we are all having such a great time, and they are genuinely such great people, so it is a great relationship." Lee admitted that she didn't start to feel 100% normal until after the Olympics. "We were still trying to figure everything out, get into the routine, learn how my body was able to adjust to the medicine the time changes and the traveling it was just a lot going on all at once. Plus, being stressed and overwhelmed definitely didn't help. But yeah, I would say things definitely calmed down afterwards, and now I am able to just kind of live my life a little bit more normal I just have to go to my doctor every couple of months, but I take my medicine every single day. They confirmed Groenvold had been struck by lightning during a trip to a cabin owned by his family. He was rushed to hospital but passed away shortly after arriving on Tuesday night. Groenvold was a popular member of Norway 's Alpine skiing team before he moved into freestyle and ski cross in the late 90s. He first broke onto the scene with an impressive podium finish in a downhill in Sierra Nevada , Spain, in 1999 as a World Cup Alpine skier. More success soon followed as he won a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2005 world championships. Two years later he again came third in the overall ski cross cup before his career best performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics. After his career ended, he became a national team coach and a beloved sports commentator. Most read in Olympics Norwegian federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug said: "Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, who has meant so much to both the Alpine and freestyle communities. "Audun had a great career in both alpine skiing and ski cross, before becoming the national ski cross coach.
