UN warns of 'ongoing tragedy' as Indigenous groups in Colombia face extinction

BOGOTA, Colombia — The United Nations human rights office in Colombia warned Tuesday that five Indigenous groups in a storied mountain range face 'physical and cultural' extinction, a critical threat that stems from armed groups fighting over their territory and insufficient state protection. Scott Campbell, Colombia's representative for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement that the risk of physical and cultural extinction of Indigenous People of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is 'an ongoing tragedy that we can and must prevent.'

France calls on Israel to allow ‘massive and unhampered' aid to Gaza

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Sunday called on Israel to allow the 'immediate, massive and unhampered' resumption of aid to Gaza after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he would allow a 'basic amount' in. 'After three months of diplomatic efforts, the Israeli government finally announces the reopening of humanitarian aid to Gaza,' Barrot posted on X. 'It must be immediate, massive and unhampered. 'It must put an end to the catastrophic humanitarian situation and definitively end the famine,' he added. Earlier, Netanyahu announced that on the army's recommendation, 'Israel will authorize the entry of a basic amount of food for the population to ensure that a hunger crisis does not develop in the Gaza Strip', a statement from his office said. Since Israel's aid blockade began on March 2, Gaza's health ministry, UN organizations and some foreign leaders have been warning of the danger of famine in the territory.

Italian MPs Protest at Egypt's Gaza Border Against War

Italian parliamentarians protested on Sunday in front of Egypt's Rafah border crossing with Gaza, calling for aid access and an end to the war in the devastated Palestinian territory. "Europe is not doing enough, nothing to stop the massacre," Cecilia Strada, an Italian member of the European parliament, told AFP. The group, including 11 members of the Italian parliament, three MEPs and representatives of NGOs, held signs reading "Stop genocide now", "End illegal occupation" and "Stop arming Israel". "There should be a complete embargo on weapons to and from Israel and a stop to trade with illegal settlements," Strada said. The protesters laid toys on the ground in solidarity with Gaza's children, who the UN warns face "a growing risk of starvation, illness and death" more than two months into a total Israeli aid blockade. At least 15,000 children have been killed in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, according to the United Nations. Israel has faced mounting pressure to lift its aid blockade, as UN agencies warn of critical shortages of food, clean water, fuel and medicines. It resumed its offensive on March 18, ending a two-month truce in its war against Hamas triggered by the Palestinian group's October 2023 attack on Israel. On Saturday Israel announced an expanded military campaign, killing dozens of people in new strikes. "We hear the bombs right now," Walter Massa, president of Italian non-profit organization Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Italiana, told AFP near the crossing. "The Israeli army continues to do what it believes is right in the face of an international community that does not intervene, and in Gaza, beyond the Rafah crossing border, people continue to die," he said. UN chief Antonio Guterres said Saturday said he was "alarmed" at the escalation and called for "a permanent ceasefire, now". Italy's government on Saturday reiterated its calls to Israel to stop attacking Gaza, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani saying: "Enough with the attacks." "We no longer want to see the Palestinian people suffer," Tajani said. Gaza's health ministry said Sunday 3,193 people have been killed since Israel resumed its strikes on March 18, taking the war's overall toll to 53,339.

Spain PM calls for ‘pressure on Israel to halt the massacre in Gaza'

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on Saturday for pressure to stop Israel's 'massacre in Gaza' and said Madrid plans a UN resolution requesting a world court ruling on aid access to the Palestinian territory. Sánchez told an Arab League summit in Baghdad that the war triggered by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel has led to 'unacceptable numbers' of victims in Gaza, violating the 'principle of humanity.' 'The extremely grave humanitarian crisis Gaza has endured since October 2023 has caused more than 50,000 dead, 100,000 wounded and two million displaced,' said Sánchez, who has sharply criticized the Israeli offensive. World leaders should 'intensify our pressure on Israel to halt the massacre in Gaza, particularly through the channels afforded to us by international law,' he said. The Socialist prime minister said Spain will 'submit to the United Nations General Assembly a proposal to ask the International Court of Justice to rule on Israel's compliance with its international obligations on humanitarian aid access to Gaza,' under a complete aid blockade since March 2. Sánchez said Spain would also back another draft UN resolution calling on Israel to 'end the humanitarian blockade' and guarantee 'full and unrestricted access for humanitarian aid' to enter Gaza. On May 7, Sánchez told the Spanish parliament that Madrid would present a draft resolution at the UN General Assembly aimed at 'proposing urgent measures to stop the killing of innocent civilians and ensure humanitarian aid' in Gaza. Speaking in Baghdad on Saturday, he said that promoting 'a political solution' to the conflict was a priority. 'The only path toward peace in the region' is 'the implementation of the two-state solution' to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, he said. 'I wish once again to urge other countries to recognize the State of Palestine.' He expressed hope for progress in an international conference on the two-state solution planned for June in Saudi Arabia, which represents 'a historic opportunity.' But Sánchez said that 'it will only succeed if there is broad Arab and European consensus that leads to firm action by the entire international community.'
