Where does OU-Texas rank among best rivalries in the SEC?
Where does OU-Texas rank among best rivalries in the SEC? The SEC is home to some of the best rivalries in college football. The Red River Showdown, the Iron Bowl, the Egg Bowl, the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and the Battle of the Boot between LSU and Arkansas. Rivalry weekends take the sport to a different level. So which rivalries are the best in the SEC? Blake Toppemeyer of USA TODAY Sports ranked the top 10 rivalries in the conference, and OU-Texas came in at No. 2 on the list. When the SEC added Oklahoma and Texas, the conference didn't just gain two iconic brands, it acquired one of college football's best rivalries. Most games are better when played on college campuses, but this one at the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair of Texas stands as an exception to that rule. - Toppemeyer, USA TODAY Sports OU-Texas is a one-of-a-kind rivalry game. The 50-50 split, the State Fair of Texas, and the 120 games in its history make it one of the more storied rivalries in the sport. While the Iron Bowl may have taken the top spot on Toppemeyer's list and is a fantastic rivalry game in its own right, it's been played 31 fewer times, and there was a 41-year gap in the game. Auburn's struggled to have a foothold on the game over the last decade and half. The Tigers have only won four times since 2008. Though Oklahoma holds the edge since 2008, Texas has won the Red River Showdown seven times, making it a much closer rivalry game. The SEC is just familiarizing itself with OU-Texas. Year one of the game as members of the SEC was not a good representation of the back-and-forth nature of the Red River Showdown. This year, the Sooners hope to even the score with the Longhorns under Brent Venables. OU softball vs. Ohio State at The Horseshoe? Buckeyes pitched Sooners on idea
NORMAN — An OU softball game at The Horseshoe? Sooners skipper Patty Gasso said Sunday that she recently got a text from Ohio State coach Kirin Kumar, who pitched a Sooners-Buckeyes showdown at Ohio Stadium. Advertisement 'I don't know the dimensions or anything but we would do it in a heartbeat,' Gasso said. 'We would love to do it here but I know that it does take some work to make that happen, (Owen Field) just doesn't fit right.' Gasso mentioned the Ohio State possibility when asked about the idea of an OU-Texas softball game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Attendance for the OU-Texas game in Norman on Sunday was 4,609 — a Love's Field record. OU softball is the biggest draw in the sport, and Gasso said she's willing to play wherever. 'That's our job,' Gasso said, 'is to help push this sport.' OU football has twice played at the Horseshoe, in 1977 and 2017. Maybe OU softball is up next. 247Sports doesn't consider OU-Texas the most intriguing neutral site game
247Sports doesn't consider OU-Texas the most intriguing neutral site game Show Caption Hide Caption John Mateer growing relationships with Deion Burks, Javonnie Gibson OU football QB John Mateer growing relationships with WRs Deion Burks, Javonnie Gibson The annual Red River Rivalry clash between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns is one of the most anticipated games of the college football season every single year. No matter how good both teams are, OU-Texas almost always delivers. The unique environment that's become a part of the game only helps to add to the intrigue. Played in Dallas, Texas at the legendary Cotton Bowl that is equidistant between the two campuses in Norman and Austin, the entire game takes place in the middle of the Texas State Fair every October. With the fans split 50-50 inside the stadium, there's truly no other environment like Red River. The rivalry game is always played at this neural site in South Dallas, and it's one of the key pillars of every college football season. The game has survived conference realignment, as OU represented the Big Eight for many years and Texas represented the Southwest Conference. As the two teams joined the Big 12 and later broke off to join the SEC, the Red River Rivalry has stood the test of time, even as neutral-site rivalries are not extremely commonplace in college football. 247Sports college football writer Cody Nagel compiled a list of the most intriguing neutral-site games for the 2025 season. Surprisingly, OU-Texas was not at the top of his list, instead getting the runner-up spot behind Florida-Georgia. Texas won in a blowout last season, but the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl delivers on drama more often than not. Oklahoma has lost two of the past three meetings since winning four straight before Brent Venables took the helm. But a potential resurgence could be in the cards for the Sooners with coveted transfer quarterback John Mateer leading the offense after an impressive spring. The star power is not lacking with the Longhorns either, as former five-star prospect Arch Manning steps into the spotlight for his first season as Texas' starter. - Nagel, 247Sports All due respect to Nagel and to "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party", but there's never a year where the Red River Rivalry shouldn't top a list like this. Florida has beaten Georgia just once (2020) since 2016, and the last one-score game was in 2019. OU-Texas, on the other hand, is typically always a close game, and the schools have split the last four matchups, with nine out of the previous 12 contests being decided by one score. The Red River Rivalry isn't just the best and most intriguing neutral-site game in college football. It's one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports. The Longhorns won 34-3 a year ago, as the Sooners were completely inept on offense all season. Oklahoma won 34-30 in 2023, and they'll look to get revenge for last season's loss when the Red River Rivalry returns to the iconic Cotton Bowl Stadium on October 11th.

Ranking the games on the Oklahoma Sooners 2025 schedule
The Oklahoma Sooners 2025 schedule is one of the most challenging schedules in the nation. After a 6-7 season, Oklahoma is entering a massive year for the coaching staff and the program. The Sooners have to be in playoff contention, or there could be a reset with the program. As we learned in 2024, every week in the SEC is going to be a dog fight, especially when you're playing the Sooners schedule. Each game throughout the season takes on its own level of importance, either because of who Oklahoma is playing or because of where it falls on the schedule. So how does each game on the Sooners 2025 schedule stack up in order of importance? Let's take a look. When: Saturday, Oct. 11, in Dallas Cotton Bowl It's the game of games. No other game in any season matters more than OU-Texas. It's the greatest rivalry in college football in the best neutral site venue in the sport. Oklahoma will get its first real look at Arch Manning, a player who is expected to contend for the Heisman in 2025 and put the Longhorns in the national title picture. Oklahoma needs to avenge what happened last season and reset the narrative against their Red River Rivals. When: Saturday, Sept. 6, in Norman In week two, the Oklahoma Sooners will take on the Michigan Wolverines in a critical nonconference matchup. Want to find out what this Sooners team is going to be about in 2025, this game will tell the tale. Michigan may not be the team we saw go win the national title in 2023, but they'll be really good in the trenches, which should provide a good indicator to Oklahoma's chances in the SEC this season. More: Early SEC Quarterback Rankings for 2025 When: Saturday, Nov. 1, in Knoxville When the Oklahoma Sooners face the Tennessee Volunteers, it'll be at the end of five straight games, including games against Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and culminating in the road trip to Neyland Stadium to take on the Volunteers. That's a tough run of games leading into Oklahoma's second bye week. Go into the bye week with a road win, and the Sooners' confidence level will be sky-high. Take a loss into the bye, and the pressure will be on with three weeks to go. When: Saturday, Nov. 15, in Tuscaloosa Coming out of Oklahoma's second bye week of the season, the Sooners will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Oklahoma dominated Bama in 2024. It was an embarrassingly dreadful performance as a matter of fact. And you know that one's going to sit in the craw of the Crimson Tide when the Sooners make the trip in mid-November. If Oklahoma wants to make the College Football Playoff, they'll need to steal one on the road. When: Saturday, Nov. 29, in Norman The Oklahoma Sooners had LSU on the ropes until a kickoff return went for a touchdown and completely changed the momentum in the 2024 regular-season finale. Oklahoma will welcome the Tigers to town hoping to return the favor. More than it was last season, OU vs. LSU could be a College Football Playoff play-in game at the end of the regular season. When: Saturday, Oct. 18, in Columbia, South Carolina LaNorris Sellers is one of my darkhorse Heisman contenders in 2025. If he takes a step in his development, South Carolina could be dangerous. The Sooners go on the road to face the Gamecocks a week after the Red River Showdown. That makes this one a critical matchup for Oklahoma. When: Saturday, Nov. 22, in Norman It's not a rivalry. It's not. At the same time, it's a regional opponent that recruits some of the same midwestern areas that you do. You can't let Eli Drinkwitz and the Tigers come into your building and steal a win. Oklahoma gave that one away in 2024. That won't happen again. When: Saturday, Oct. 25, in Norman Ole Miss is going to look vastly different than the team the Sooners lost to in 2024. Though it ended as a loss, Oklahoma held a halftime lead in this one. Offensively, Oklahoma should be better in 2025 while Ole Miss could take a bit of a step back. When: Saturday, Sept. 20, in Norman Jackson Arnold returns to Norman for the first time since transferring to be the starting quarterback for the Tigers. It's the first SEC game on the schedule, and OU will want to get off on the right foot, but this one doesn't carry as much weight as the games coming down the line. When: Saturday, Oct. 4, in Norman Kent State is coming off a 0-12 season in 2024. They likely won't repeat that level of futility, but they won't be on Oklahoma's level. The only concern here is that OU plays Texas the next week, which could lead to overlooking the Golden Flashes a bit. When: Saturday, Sept. 13 in Philadelphia In one of the worst offensive seasons in Oklahoma Sooners history, OU beat Temple 51-3 to open the 2024 season. Could the Sooners get to 70? When: Saturday, Aug. 30, in Norman Indiana State went 4-8 in 2024, and the Sooners are entering the season with something to prove. Hide your kids. This one could get brutal.
