Children escape serious injury after truck crash into apartment
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A pickup truck crashed into a Pontiac apartment's living room early Saturday morning, and the three children inside narrowly avoided serious injury. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office reports that the crash happened around 12:20 a.m. on May 17 at an apartment on Firelite Ln. near Cherry Hill Dr. in Pontiac. Deputies were sent to the location for reports of a crash involving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado and the driver attempting to run away while carrying her dog. The office says three children, two 1-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl, had stopped at their apartment minutes before the crash to pick up personal belongings. They planned to return to their babysitter across the street when the crash happened. The children had to break out a nearby window and climb through it to get out of the apartment. The truck crashed through the front door and window, sending debris and items in the living room flying throughout the apartment. The office says the children suffered minor scrapes but were treated at the scene and did not require further medical attention. The driver, a 36-year-old Pontiac woman, was arrested a short time later. A security guard stopped the driver from leaving the scene. The office says she was taken to the hospital for possible injuries. She denied that she was the driver of the truck. She was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated but was released from custody pending toxicology reports. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The Brief A ceremony took place today in Oakland County to honor that commitment and sacrifice. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office held its yearly awards ceremony during National Police Week. OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) - Law enforcement officials put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, and that dedication sometimes means they pay the ultimate sacrifice. What they're saying Meanwhile, a ceremony took place today in Oakland County to honor that commitment and sacrifice. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office held its yearly awards ceremony during National Police Week. "A time when we pause to honor those in our agency who have demonstrated extraordinary courage, compassion, and dedication in the face of adversity," said Oakland County Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Timothy Willis. "Their heroism reminds us that community and courage go hand-in-hand." The day was also a reminder that these officials often pay the ultimate sacrifice. "Our agency suffered an immeasurable loss—Deputy Brad Reckling," Willis said. "His loss has deeply affected every one of us." The backstory Deputy Reckling was shot and killed last June as he conducted surveillance on a stolen vehicle in Detroit. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, he was awarded the Citation for Valor. "Today we honor him, not just with our words, but with our continued service behind the badge," Willis said. Big picture view A number of deputies were also recognized for their efforts after several people, including children, were shot at a splash pad in Rochester Hills last summer. These deputies were awarded the Citation for Bravery. Civilians who helped the victims before emergency crews arrived at the scene that day were also recognized. "Thank you" is what it's all about, as the men and women behind the badges are honored for their commitment to public safety.

Unlikely excuse of Michigan man, 21, arrested for shooting 23 year-old fiancée dead
A Michigan man, 21, offered a dubious excuse for allegedly shooting his 23-year-old fiancée to death, according to police who arrested him. Before being taken into custody last week, Michael Devon Webb claimed on a 911 call that while he was cleaning his gun, he accidentally shot Rachel Renee Wooten, the mother of their six-month-old child. The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said in a release that 'the evidence did not support' Webb's explanation. The April 15 shooting took place at the young family's home in Highland Township, a small suburb about 45 miles northwest of Detroit. Wooten was found dead inside the home with a single gunshot wound to the neck from close range. Webb, also in the house when police arrived, had a non-fatal gunshot wound, which he claimed was from the same bullet that killed Wooten, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office. The baby was also found in the home but was unharmed. Webb has been charged with first-degree murder in what the county prosecutor described as a 'domestic violence death.' 'Rachel Wooten was just 23 and a mother of an infant,' Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald said in a statement. 'Her entire life was ahead of her, until it was ended in what appears to be a domestic violence tragedy. She won't be there for her child or other loved ones in her life. I'm committed to bringing her killer to justice.' Sheriff Michael Bouchard described Webb's excuses as a 'false offered narrative' and praised his detectives. 'I am proud of our investigators and team that responded to a tragic death and unraveled a false offered narrative to hold an individual accountable,' Bouchard said. Webb was booked into the Oakland County Jail before being arraigned Friday before Magistrate Judge Andra Richardson in 52-1 District Court in Novi, Michigan. Judge Richardson remanded him to custody without bond and is scheduled to appear in court again for a probable cause hearing on April 30. If convicted, Webb faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Heather Wooten, the younger sister of Rachel Wooten, organized a GoFundMe to help get custody of Aspen, Rachel's baby. 'My sister was murdered by her fiancé on April 15th, 2025,' Heather wrote. 'Just 6 months after she welcomed sweet baby Aspen into this world, her life was taken from her.' Heather described Rachel as 'the best sissy in the entire world, my rock, and my best friend.' 'I am currently fighting for custody of sweet baby Aspen, who is currently in custody of the incarcerated father's mother. My sister wanted me to take care of Aspen if anything happened to her and I would appreciate any help through this process,' Heather continued. As of late Wednesday morning, the GoFundMe has raised just over $3,400 toward the $5,000 goal. A member of the Wooten family declined to speak to
