Wendy's employee accidentally crashes car into Oakland Park restaurant where he works, Broward officials say

A Wendy's restaurant in Oakland Park sustained significant damage Sunday morning after an employee accidentally drove into the building, authorities said. The crash happened around 8:18 a.m. at the Wendy's located at 1040 E Commercial Boulevard, according to Oakland Park Fire Rescue. Crews responded to reports of a vehicle into a building and arrived to find a car lodged inside the lobby area of the restaurant. No patrons were inside at the time of the crash. The only person injured was the driver — an employee of the restaurant — who sustained minor injuries and refused transport to a hospital, fire officials said. Tables and chairs inside the fast food location were visibly smashed in the aftermath. Broward Sheriff's Office deputies and fire rescue crews remained on the scene, and BSO is leading the investigation. A city official was requested to inspect the damage and determine whether the building is safe to remain open for business.

Retired BSO sergeant killed in RV accident remembered as beloved community pillar

A tight-knit Oakland Park neighborhood is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of a retired Broward Sheriff's Office sergeant. Craig Bachan was killed Wednesday when a mini RV he was working on collapsed and crushed him. He was 64. A devastating loss to the neighborhood "There's nothing bad you can say about him -- it's heartbreaking," said neighbor Lary Arnett. "It's impacting the whole neighborhood. We can't believe he's gone." Bachan had just purchased the RV and was planning to travel the country, including a long-anticipated trip to Alaska. His son, Connor Bachan, shared photos of his father at his retirement party and spending time with family and friends. He called the accident a freak occurrence. A life of service and support Bachan spent 29 years serving with the Broward Sheriff's Office, earning the admiration of colleagues and neighbors alike. "He was rock solid, dependable and reliable," said neighbor Lisa Capano, who described Bachan as the go-to person in the community—always ready to lend a hand. Former Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti, who worked with Bachan during his own 36-year career, called him irreplaceable. "He loved what he did. And that's the sad part. You never know when your time will be gone," Lamberti said. "He was never negative and dedicated his life to serving people. I wish I had a thousand Sergeant Bachans."

Recently retired Florida sheriff's deputy crushed to death by RV he recently purchased

A retired Florida sheriff's deputy was crushed to death by his own RV outside his home after reportedly buying the vehicle to celebrate his retirement. Deputies from the Broward Sheriff 's Office said they responded to the scene Wednesday evening to find the victim trapped underneath the RV at his home in the community of Oakland Park, just north of Fort Lauderdale, reports 7News. The BSO identified the man as one of its own: 64-year-old Craig Bachan, a recently retired sergeant from the department, according to the station. Bachan's son and sister also confirmed the victim's identity to ABC Local 10 News. His family said he left the department just 10 months ago. The BSO has not yet publicly released further details surrounding the circumstances of the victim's death. No foul play is suspected, although an investigation is underway. Bachan had reportedly been preparing the RV he had purchased after retirement for a summer trip when it collapsed on him, neighbors said. One neighbor said they discovered him trapped under the vehicle from across the street and immediately called 911. 'He just bought the RV,' the neighbor told the news station. 'He was going to go out to Montana, Idaho, that area of the country this summer on a vacation.' Local news cameras captured a yellow tarp at the scene with the surrounding area taped off. Bachan's sister remembered her sibling as 'an incredible son, a loving father, and a devoted brother. She also shared a photograph of Bachan taken at his retirement party with local media while calling him 'an amazing deputy.' Neighbors mourned for the late deputy, who they considered the 'heartbeat of the community.' According to Bachan's Facebook profile, he first joined the BSO in 1995. His LinkedIn profile said that he was promoted to detective and assigned to the Violent Crimes Unit in 1999. He went on to spend 11 years assigned to the Special Victims Unit investigating sexual crimes and missing persons, his profile says. Bachan was eventually promoted to Sergeant in December 2012.
