Sink or save? Group starts petition to fight against SS United States from becoming artificial reef
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — It's been three weeks since the SS United States was towed to Mobile where work continues to prepare the ship for sinking off the coast of Northwest Florida, but not everyone is on board with the plan. Jason Wade, with the New York Coalition to Save the SS United States, started a petition to stop the ship from going underwater. Testimony for 2021 Toulminville double murder trial raises question of who shot first 'This is truly her last shot before we lose her forever,' Wade pleaded. He said the goal is to turn the historic Ocean Liner into a museum ship. 'Our vision is to have her in New York as a static floating attraction that will be a incubator for small business,' Wade explained. 'It'll be an educational hub. You know, there's hundreds of years' worth of maritime history that we feel needs to be taught, and the future generation needs to understand the importance of these super liners.' Wade said they've gathered 7,500 signatures so far, and once they hit 10,000, they hope to get the attention of lawmakers. 'We're seeking assistance from the federal government,' Wade said. 'So executive branch, President Trump, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Interior, the people that are in power and have the control over what happens with the fate of this ship, so the petition is aimed directly at getting awareness to them.'
