Cocovic to open account when he takes to the Mainden Hurdle in Sligo
Runner-up in his last two starts, the Eric McNamara-trained Cocovic should open his account in the Hankook Pearse Road Tyres Maiden Hurdle in Sligo. Winner of a Ballingarry point-to-point in May of last year, this Ocovango gelding showed little in his first two excursions on the track, in maiden hurdles at Fairyhouse and Limerick. But he stepped-up at Kilbeggan in June when filling the runner-up berth behind Bossing It, finishing 12 lengths clear of the third. And, last time, at Killarney's July Meeting, he made most of the running before being collared close home and beaten a half-length by Nitty Gritty, with a 15 lengths gap back to 109-rated Fast Felix in third spot. Currently rated 108 (he was raised 3lb. for his Killarney run), Cocovic must concede 7lb. to 106-rated Sophia Rose, who will be ridden by emerging 7lb claimer Eoin Staples. At the weights, Sophia Rose should have the edge. But she disappointed last time, finishing a well-beaten fifth behind tequila Talkin in Wexford. And Cocovic, open to further improvement, is preferred. From the in-form yard of Denis Hogan, Tea It Is, a 16-race maiden, might belatedly get off the mark in the Aidan Moffitt Memorial Handicap Hurdle. An eight-year-old, this fellow has posted two rock-solid recent efforts and, off a lowly mark off just 75, might have his turn here. In recent weeks, Tea It Is has finished third to Pampar Lady in Cork before filling the runner-up spot behind the progressive Shaboozee at Ballinrobe, for which he went up 2lb. If Daniel King's mount is to open his account, he'll have to cope with the Jimmy Barcoe-trained Surviving Murmanks, shouldering a 7lb penalty for his breakthrough success, at the fortieth attempt, in Tramore on Sunday. Barcoe also has prospects with five-time hurdle winner Influential Lady, despite a losing run which stretches back 14 months. Third to That's All in Kilbeggan, this 11-year-old mare finished a solid second to Chosen Shant in Wexford last time and might be capable of returning to winning ways.
