Master Canteen Square may get a new name reflecting state's legacy
Bhubaneswar: Master Canteen Square, located at the heart of the city, may get a new name. The state govt has asked the departments of general administration and public grievance (GA & PG) and the revenue and disaster management to take appropriate steps on a fresh appeal to consider renaming the square to something that will reflect the state's rich cultural and historical legacy. Supreme Court advocate and activist Radhakanta Tripathy, in a fresh appeal to the state govt earlier this month, said the area, considered as the central business district of the state capital, be renamed after culturally resonant symbols such as Kalinga, Utkal, Paika or freedom fighters like Jayi Rajaguru and Saheed Laxman Nayak. "Adding suffixes like Chowk, Circle or Square to these names could instil pride among Odias," he added. Tripathy said the current name fails to do justice to Odisha 's civilizational heritage. The activist has been raising the issue since March 2021 through multiple letters and reminders. Deputy secretary to the govt, Sanghamitra Behera, has forwarded Tripathy's petition to the departments concerned for necessary action, with copies sent to the chief minister and chief secretary's attention. Prominent businessman Sunjoy Hans, whose forefathers established the original Master Canteen eatery in the late 1940s during the construction of the new capital city, said the name has historical significance. "We are leaving the decision of renaming Master Canteen Square to the govt. But the name is etched in the minds of the people of the city; it would be difficult to erase," Hans said.

The chariot cover with Pipili appliqué work is 8-ft high with a circumference of 26 ft. It has been made by artisan Mitu Mallick of Pipili. Pipili's colourful vibe will lend beauty to chariot pulling too as 20 flags, two 'alatas', four 'chanduas' and lamp shades will be part of the procession. The organisers have also placed an order for 200 t-shirts, 100 kurtas and 55 kurtis with another Pipili artisan. All garments will have prints of the face of Lord Jagannath, three chariots and 'Jai Jagannath' slogan. "We have delivered it to a Bhubaneswar contact, who will be sending it to Sydney. The order was placed in Feb," said Mayuri Mohapatra, whose artisans worked on the order. The rituals will be performed by two Indian priests, including an Odia. Community members will perform Odissi dance and 'sankirtan' and prepare the 'bhog'. "We are taking care to follow the minutest details of Rath Yatra and teach our children about the festival so they can also organise it in the future," said Sujeet Jena, former president of Orioz (Odia Society of Australia) and one of the organisers. Besides Odias living in Sydney, other community members from Queensland and Australia Capital Territory will attend. "We will have a wider Indian and Australian community joining the festival. Several local politicians will be invited too," added Jena.

Parties, groups in state urge PM to resolve Mahanadi water dispute
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's PRAGATI meeting on May 28, in which discussion on Polavaram project is likely, political parties and organisations in the state urged the PM to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh. They said the Mahanadi turns dry during summer in Odisha due to the construction of dams by Chhattisgarh in the upper catchment area. They also expressed concern over the Polavaram project, which may submerge bordering areas of Odisha and other states. BJD vice-president Prasanna Acharya said the previous Naveen govt discussed the Mahanadi dispute twice in high-level meetings. "Chhattisgarh govt is not following the Interstate River Water Disputes Act, 1956. It is building barrages in the upper catchment of the river, affecting Odisha's fishermen, farmers and industries," he added. He said groundwater is fast depleting in western Odisha as the Mahanadi is drying up. "Hirakud reservoir is not getting enough water during summer. The issue should be resolved by asking Chhattisgarh to follow the Act to release water and stop building barrages and dams in the upper catchment area," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka said the issue can be resolved as there are BJP govts in both states and at the Centre. "Our interest should be preserved in both issues," he added. Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan asserted the govt will strongly defend the state's interests in the issue. Sudarshan Das, convener of the Mahanadi Bachao Andolan , urged the PM to intervene in the matter and resolve the dispute in all aspects. "If we see history, water dispute tribunals take much time to resolve the matter. Most of the cases in the tribunal do not yield expected results," he added. There are BJP-led govts at the Centre and in both states, he said. "It will be easy for the govts to settle the issue without facing any big challenge. Now is the best time to talk about the Polavaram issue," he added. Odia Asmita Parishad on Monday wrote to Modi urging him to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute by convening a meeting between the CMs of both states. He should solve the Polavaram issue without favouring an party, it said. "The Mahanadi is the lifeline of 2.5 crore Odias for agriculture, industrial, power supply and drinking water. People of 16 districts are facing difficulty even in getting drinking water as the Mahanadi has dried up," said Rabi Behera, convener of the parishad.

Odisha FC among several clubs to fail AIFF licensing
Kolkata: The club licensing committee of All India Football Federation (AIFF), which met on Thursday to evaluate the Premier 1 License for the 2025–26 season, rejected the licences of seven Indian Super League (ISL) clubs including Odisha FC. The other clubs who have failed to meet the criteria are NorthEast United FC, Hyderabad FC, Kerala Blasters FC, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Churchill Brothers FC Goa and Inter Kashi. These clubs have not been granted the license due to multiple failures across A and B criteria. "The clubs whose applications have been rejected have the right to either appeal the decision or request an exemption to participate in the National Club Competitions, as per applicable licensing regulations," AIFF said in a statement. Among the many criteria, the clubs will have to furnish proof of their access to the stadiums and practice facilities which one understands Odisha FC have been unable to provide. The club though did not give an official statement regarding the issue but a club source told TOI on Friday evening, "We are under active discussion with the govt, so we cannot make a statement right now. Both (the club and the govt) want to sign the MoU but the terms are under negotiations and not agreed yet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Đăng ký Undo " Odisha FC owner Rohan Sharma , however, was upset with the club missing out on the licencing criteria. In a post on 'X', he wrote, "I'm here to help football in Odisha, not work against it!! I'm happy with the fan growth. I love the passion for the sport here, and I'm happy to say this year we will have one if not two Odias in the first team." The govt, meanwhile, chose not to react to the posts on the social media platform. Meanwhile, Punjab FC were the only club to have been granted the licence without sanctions while seven other clubs, including ISL double winners Mohun Bagan Super Giant, were granted licence with sanctions due to minor non-fulfilment of B criteria. The others are Mumbai City FC, Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC, FC Goa, Chennaiyin FC and East Bengal FC.
