Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's PRAGATI meeting on May 28, in which discussion on
Polavaram project
is likely, political parties and organisations in the state urged the PM to resolve the
Mahanadi water dispute
between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
They said the Mahanadi turns dry during summer in Odisha due to the construction of dams by Chhattisgarh in the upper catchment area. They also expressed concern over the Polavaram project, which may submerge bordering areas of Odisha and other states.
BJD vice-president Prasanna Acharya said the previous Naveen govt discussed the Mahanadi dispute twice in high-level meetings. "Chhattisgarh govt is not following the Interstate River Water Disputes Act, 1956.
It is building barrages in the upper catchment of the river, affecting Odisha's fishermen, farmers and industries," he added. He said groundwater is fast depleting in western Odisha as the Mahanadi is drying up.
"Hirakud reservoir is not getting enough water during summer. The issue should be resolved by asking Chhattisgarh to follow the Act to release water and stop building barrages and dams in the upper catchment area," he said.

Congress MP Saptagiri Ulaka said the issue can be resolved as there are BJP govts in both states and at the Centre. "Our interest should be preserved in both issues," he added.
Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan asserted the govt will strongly defend the state's interests in the issue.
Sudarshan Das, convener of the
Mahanadi Bachao Andolan
, urged the PM to intervene in the matter and resolve the dispute in all aspects. "If we see history, water dispute tribunals take much time to resolve the matter.
Most of the cases in the tribunal do not yield expected results," he added.
There are BJP-led govts at the Centre and in both states, he said. "It will be easy for the govts to settle the issue without facing any big challenge. Now is the best time to talk about the Polavaram issue," he added.
Odia Asmita Parishad on Monday wrote to Modi urging him to resolve the Mahanadi water dispute by convening a meeting between the CMs of both states. He should solve the Polavaram issue without favouring an party, it said. "The Mahanadi is the lifeline of 2.5 crore Odias for agriculture, industrial, power supply and drinking water. People of 16 districts are facing difficulty even in getting drinking water as the Mahanadi has dried up," said Rabi Behera, convener of the parishad.

MIM slams NCERT changes, role of RSS

1 2 Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the BJP govt at the Centre should include the book 'Muslims Against Partition' by Shamsul Islam in the NCERT-recommended syllabi. "This lie about partition is repeated time and again. At that time, not even 2–3% of Muslims had the right to vote. Only elitists such as zamindars and jagirdars were enfranchised. Even today, they (RSS and BJP) blame us (Muslims) for the partition of the country. How were we responsible for that? Those who fled, fled. Those who were loyal, stayed," he said. Responding to media queries regarding proposed changes to the NCERT syllabus concerning the partition of the country, he stated that the RSS was never part of India's freedom struggle and did not participate in the Quit India Movement, the Salt Satyagraha, or other agitations. "Why don't they include in the NCERT syllabus that the RSS hated freedom fighters more than the British did? The RSS always sided with the British. Let them teach students all of this as well. No, they only want to spread hatred against Muslims," Owaisi alleged. He claimed the RSS never participated in the independence movement. "The RSS's Hindutva ideology has always been contrary to the Constitution. It was wrong for the PM to praise an organisation that spreads hatred in the country," he asserted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Trump intended to gift 'Poo-tihn' 'American Bald Eagle Desk Statue', 8-page secret document found in Alaska hotel

White House said the document, left behind at a Alaska hotel, was just a multi-page lunch menu. After President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska Friday, eight pages of a document which was supposed to be secret, were found at the business center of an Alaskan hotel -- possibly left behind by the US team by mistake. NPR reported about the papers adding that it's not known whether they were authentic documents but they included US State Department markings and were found on a public printer. The hotel is about 20 minutes away from where Putin and Trump convened at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, NPR reported. The documents revealed that Trump intended to gift Putin an "American Bald Eagle Desk Statue" and it's not known whether it was gifted to him. The document shared precise locations and meeting time schedules along with the phone numbers of US government employees. The document listed the names of Russian leaders with phonetic spellings, making Putin "Mr President Poo-tihn", NPR reported. NPR posted a menu that included a 'green salad' with 'champagne vinaigrette' paired with surf and turf consisting of a filet mignon with 'brandy peppercorn sauce' and 'buttery whipped potatoes and roasted asparagus' with halibut, a fish found in Russia's arctic waters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? A seating chart shows that Putin and Trump were supposed to sit across from each other during the luncheon. Trump would be flanked by six officials: Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to his right, and Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff to his left. White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly dismissed the papers as a "multi-page lunch menu" and suggested leaving the information on a public printer was not a security breach.

Some governors acting like mafia hitmen against citizens: Tushar Gandhi

T'puram: Criticizing the role of governors, Tushar Gandhi , the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi , said that some governors are like hitmen used by mafias against citizens. "There are two types of governors in the country. One type is sent to BJP-ruled states to enjoy a retired life. The second type is sent to opposition-ruled states with instructions to disrupt governance. These governors act as super vice-chancellors and disrupt higher education, forgetting their duties to protect the Constitution and improve democracy," Gandhi said. Gandhi's remarks came while he was inaugurating a national seminar organized by the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad here on the challenges faced by universities. "The educated upper class in India is becoming more irrational, falling victim to the false propaganda experiments conducted by communal forces. They have been made to believe that Hindus are in danger and will soon be wiped out. These forces ensure that the majority supports any atrocities they commit, paving the way for the persecution of minorities," he said. The education system, which lacks rational thinking and promotes enslavement, aids this process, Gandhi added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He said that Centre's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 maintains a flawed perspective on education and creates a system that further enslaves students. "Today's education hides realities, eliminates rational thinking, and fosters a slave mentality, becoming a tool to propagate the interests of those in power. People in every region must take responsibility to counter these issues. States should have the right to develop their educational systems, creating an education model that aligns with their culture and region," Gandhi said.
