Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the BJP govt at the Centre should include the book 'Muslims Against Partition' by Shamsul Islam in the NCERT-recommended syllabi.
"This lie about partition is repeated time and again. At that time, not even 2–3% of Muslims had the right to vote. Only elitists such as zamindars and jagirdars were enfranchised. Even today, they (RSS and BJP) blame us (Muslims) for the partition of the country. How were we responsible for that? Those who fled, fled. Those who were loyal, stayed," he said.
Responding to media queries regarding proposed changes to the NCERT syllabus concerning the partition of the country, he stated that the RSS was never part of India's freedom struggle and did not participate in the Quit India Movement, the Salt Satyagraha, or other agitations.
"Why don't they include in the NCERT syllabus that the RSS hated freedom fighters more than the British did? The RSS always sided with the British.
Let them teach students all of this as well. No, they only want to spread hatred against Muslims," Owaisi alleged.

The Hyderabad MP also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for praising the RSS in his Independence Day address, calling it a "great insult" to India's freedom struggle. He claimed the RSS never participated in the independence movement. "The RSS's Hindutva ideology has always been contrary to the Constitution. It was wrong for the PM to praise an organisation that spreads hatred in the country," he asserted.

Radhakrishnan named NDA's V-P candidate

New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu with an RSS background, was on Sunday named the vice-presidential candidate of the ruling National Democratic Alliance. BJP president J P Nadda made the announcement following a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and consulting the party's allies. Nadda appealed for unanimous election of Radhakrishnan (67), an OBC leader and two-time former member of Lok Sabha, to the constitutional position, saying the BJP leaders had spoken to the Opposition parties last week and will continue to do so. The Opposition leaders had told the BJP interlocutors that they can make up their mind only after being told of the ruling alliance's nominee, Nadda said, adding that his party will reach out to them again. Due to the comfortable majority of the BJP and its allies in the electoral college, comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, Radhakrishnan's election is all but certain, and the party hopes that his elevation will help it make fresh inroads in Tamil Nadu, where elections are due next year. Radhakrishnan belongs to the influential Gounder caste, an OBC community, in Tamil Nadu. Nadda emphasised on his nearly 40 years in public life, noting that he is well regarded in different parties and commands respect among various sections of society. "He is considered a statesman," Nadda said of the former Coimbatore MP who was made the Jharkhand governor in 2023 and then shifted to Maharashtra in July 2024. Unlike his predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was also a governor like him before being named as the NDA's vice-presidential nominee in 2022, Radhakrishnan has refrained from cultivating a public profile on political issues and skirted any controversy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, sources said, will oversee the vice-presidential election, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will be the polling agent. The last date for filing nomination is August 21. Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of the BJP-led alliance will to be part of Radhakrishnan's nomination-filing exercise, besides the prime minister and Union ministers. If the Opposition alsonames its candidate, the election will be held on September 9.

PM unveils next-gen GST reform draft

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Sunday that the Central government has drafted a proposal for the next-generation Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms and has sent it to the states. He sought the cooperation of state governments to implement the proposal before Diwali this year. Speaking after inaugurating two new expressways in Delhi, Modi emphasised that these reforms would benefit not only the poor and middle class but also both small and large businesses. Modi explained that the proposed changes in the GST law aim to simplify the system and adjust tax rates, which will benefit a wide range of people and businesses. 'This is a major step toward making GST more accessible, especially for businesses and consumers,' he said. The Central government intends to introduce a simplified GST structure and will consider revising tax slabs to reduce the burden on various segments of society. In his Independence Day speech on August 15, the PM had already announced plans for these changes, describing them as a step toward promoting good governance. 'For us, reforms mean moving forward with good governance,' he had said earlier. The Prime Minister reiterated that the government would focus on continuous reforms to make life easier for people and businesses alike. He added, 'In the coming months, we are going to implement several major reforms, and this Diwali, people will get a double bonus from GST reforms.' The draft proposal for GST reforms has already been sent to the states, with the Central government hoping for their swift cooperation. Modi urged the states to complete the process promptly so that the changes could be implemented in time for the Diwali festival. The primary objectives of these reforms are to simplify the GST process and adjust tax rates to benefit a larger section of the population. New GST slabs The Union government has proposed a revised GST system that would streamline the existing tax structure into only two main tax slabs—5% and 18%. The proposal suggests eliminating the current 12% and 28% tax slabs. Additionally, a special 40% tax slab has been proposed for luxury and harmful goods. The new system aims to reduce tax complexity and ensure more efficient compliance.

Is passing Bills without discussion the new normal?

The Opposition is relentless in its demand to discuss in Parliament the Election Commission's (EC) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, but that does not seem to stop the government from passing legislations in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. On Thursday (August 7, 2025), the Lok Sabha passed the Manipur Appropriation Bill, 2025, without a discussion even as the Opposition continued to protest loudly in the House through the process. The Bill, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, authorises the State to spend ₹30,969 crore on its expenditure requirements during the current financial year. Ms. Sitharaman said that the Opposition's concern for Manipur was equivalent to 'crocodile tears' because they weren't allowing a discussion on releasing funds to the State marred by ethnic violence. Manipur has been under President's Rule since February 13, 2025. The Rajya Sabha passed the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2024 on Thursday. Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the legislation will reduce the compliance burden for Indian ships and will unlock the full potential of country's coastline. He said the Bill is also in tune with the concept of ease of doing business and ensures supply chain security for the country. In another important development, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, at a press conference, accused the EC of 'criminal fraud' and collusion with the BJP to steal elections. Mr. Gandhi claimed that 1,00,250 'fake votes' were created in the Mahadevapura Assembly seat under the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency to ensure a win for the BJP. In response, the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) asked him to submit his evidence under oath. Mr. Gandhi listed out five different ways through which the alleged vote chori (theft) was done: duplicate voters, fake and invalid addresses, bulk voters at a single address, invalid photos, and the misuse of Form 6. The BJP, meanwhile, accused Mr. Gandhi of showing 'selective outrage', stating that his allegation about 'large-scale' electoral roll fraud was a sign of 'frustration and election rage'. On Friday, the Congress leadership, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Mr. Gandhi, will take out a protest march to the ECI office in Bengaluru. In other news, leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) have agreed in principle to field a candidate for the Vice-Presidential election even though the Opposition does not have the requisite numbers to win the election, just to force a contest. The decision was taken at a dinner meeting of the bloc hosted by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. This was the first physical meeting of the INDIA bloc partners after a gap of 14 months. The last meeting was on June 1, 2024. The Election Commission notified the election on Thursday. Nominations should be filed by August 21, and the election is scheduled to be held on September 9. Meanwhile, leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) unanimously passed a resolution authorising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief and Union Minister J.P. Nadda to choose their candidate for the vice-presidential election. For live updates from today's session, click here. Until next time.
