Odisha To Remove Bangladeshis From State Workforce In Major Crackdown

Bangladeshis working in Odisha are set to face the axe, with the state government announcing that it would identify and remove such individuals from employment across the state. A massive operation is already underway to identify Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally in the state. Taking a step forward, the state government now plans to ensure that no Bangladeshi is engaged by any outsourcing company in the state. "We have a stated position to identify Bangladeshis staying illegally in Odisha. Now, we will make sure that no Bangladeshi is engaged through any outsourcing company in the state," said Prithviraj Harichandran, state law minister. The decision comes amid rising security concerns in the wake of the massacre of 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. The government's agencies are in touch with various engineering firms. They have been asked to share information about any foreigner being employed not in accordance with the law and told to stop such practices or face action. In the initial phase, the identification process would focus on the six coastal districts that are accessible through the sea route. Last year, the Odisha government had directed all district administrations to carry out a comprehensive identification drive to trace Bangladeshi intruders across the state. Officials were instructed to form joint teams comprising personnel from block offices, tehsils, and police stations to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, following unrest in the neighbouring country that saw the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. In a response submitted in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, the government stated that 3,740 Bangladeshi nationals had been identified as staying illegally in the state, and that their deportation was under consideration. Guidelines would also be issued for security agencies to identify the hotspots of illegal immigrants, verify documents of suspects, and establish a reporting mechanism to ensure infiltrators do not go unnoticed. The guidelines would also help private firms carry out better background checks of their workers and report undocumented foreign nationals. The operations will be led by the Odisha Special Task Force (STF) in coordination with multiple agencies such as the Marine Police, Indian Coast Guard, Railway Protection Force, district police and intelligence agencies.

Odisha to identify Bangladeshis, disengage them from jobs in State

The Odisha government on Monday (May 19, 2025) announced that individuals from Bangladesh would be identified and removed from employment across the State. 'We have a stated position to identify Bangladeshis staying illegally in Odisha. Now, we will make sure that no Bangladeshi is engaged through any outsourcing companies in the State,' said Prithiviraj Harichandan, State Law Minister. When contacted, Pinak Mishra, Deputy Inspector General of Police of Special Task Force, said, 'If Bangladeshis are involved in any organised crime, we will surely track them.' Initially, the focus of identification would be on the six coastal districts accessible to Bangladeshis through the sea route. Last year, the Odisha government directed all district administrations to carry out a comprehensive identification drive to trace Bangladeshi intruders across the State. Officials were instructed to form joint teams comprising personnel from block offices, tehsils, and police stations to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, following unrest in Bangladesh. In a response submitted in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, the government stated that 3,740 Bangladeshi nationals had been identified as staying illegally in the State, and their deportation was under consideration. Of these, the highest number— 1,649—was found in Kendrapara district, followed by 1,112 in Jagatsinghpur. Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts reported 655 and 106 illegal Bangladeshi residents, respectively. Intrusion by Bangladeshi nationals was believed to occur primarily via the sea route along Odisha's eastern coastline.

Kadam seeks Assembly session to discuss national security

Bhubaneswar: Rama Chandra Kadam, Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and MLA from Pottangi, has written to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi urging him to immediately convene a special session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly to hold discussions over the Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent developments. Earlier, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday wrote letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and the ceasefire between India and Pakistan which was first announced by US President Donald Trump. In his letter to CM Majhi, written on May 10 and made public on Tuesday, Kadam cited the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, the unfolding Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire announced by Donald Trump as critical developments requiring urgent deliberation. 'Once again, I urge the immediate convening of a special session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. In light of the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire declared by US President Trump, it is essential that the people's representatives come together without delay. This session will provide a critical forum to deliberate on these urgent developments and reaffirm our united commitment to national security and resilience,' wrote Kadam. The senior Congress leader also appealed to the Chief Minister to act 'promptly and decisively' on this collective demand. Notably, Kadam had earlier made similar requests to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Speaker Surama Padhy to convene a special session of the Assembly to discuss the Pahalgam terrorist attack and express solidarity with the families of the victims who lost their lives in the attack. The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Monday had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first address to the nation after Operation Sindoor is not sufficient to satisfy the country's people, and a special session of Parliament should be convened to bring more transparency. The people of the country should know whether the government changed its foreign policy and allowed third party to intervene in the bilateral issue of Indian and Pakistan, OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das said.
