Kadam seeks Assembly session to discuss national security
Bhubaneswar: Rama Chandra Kadam, Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and MLA from Pottangi, has written to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi urging him to immediately convene a special session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly to hold discussions over the Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent developments.
Earlier, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday wrote letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and the ceasefire between India and Pakistan which was first announced by US President Donald Trump.
In his letter to CM Majhi, written on May 10 and made public on Tuesday, Kadam cited the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, the unfolding Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire announced by Donald Trump as critical developments requiring urgent deliberation.
'Once again, I urge the immediate convening of a special session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. In light of the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire declared by US President Trump, it is essential that the people's representatives come together without delay. This session will provide a critical forum to deliberate on these urgent developments and reaffirm our united commitment to national security and resilience,' wrote Kadam.
The senior Congress leader also appealed to the Chief Minister to act 'promptly and decisively' on this collective demand. Notably, Kadam had earlier made similar requests to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Speaker Surama Padhy to convene a special session of the Assembly to discuss the Pahalgam terrorist attack and express solidarity with the families of the victims who lost their lives in the attack.
The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Monday had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first address to the nation after Operation Sindoor is not sufficient to satisfy the country's people, and a special session of Parliament should be convened to bring more transparency. The people of the country should know whether the government changed its foreign policy and allowed third party to intervene in the bilateral issue of Indian and Pakistan, OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das said.

Bhubaneswar, June 20 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the country has increasingly 'experienced the BJP's development model", pointing to the recent trajectories of Assam, Tripura and, most recently, Odisha. Addressing a rally marking the first anniversary of Odisha's BJP government, the Prime Minister contrasted the 'previous regime's model of governance—marked by delay, obstruction, derailment and corruption' with what he called a decade of 'good governance that makes people's lives easier". Highlighting the Eastern India as a case study, Modi said a decade ago Assam was mired in instability, separatism and violence. "Today the guns have fallen silent and Assam is out‑pacing many other states on several parameters,' he said. In Tripura ,the Prime Minister said after decades of Left rule, Tripura 'lagged on every development indicator,' from crumbling infrastructure to unresponsive administration. Now, Modi argued, it has become 'a symbol of peace and progress.' Coming to Odisha , he said, it had long wrestled with widespread corruption, red‑tapism and poor infrastructure, leaving many regions behind. 'Over the past year we have worked with full resolve to change that reality,' he declared. Modi credited the union‑and‑state 'double engine' approach for a spate of projects worth 'thousands of crores' inaugurated on Friday. This model, he said, is delivering twin benefits: He said lakhs of poor families in Odisha previously excluded from Ayushman Bharat now receive coverage under both the Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana and Odisha's Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana. Nearly three crore Odias are eligible for cash‑free treatment—inside and outside the state—and more than two lakh patients have already availed themselves of the scheme in hospitals across a dozen states. Under Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana, over 23 lakh senior citizens (70+) in Odisha can claim up to Rs.5 lakh in free medical care, significantly easing household health costs. Modi said the farmers in Odisha now receive combined assistance under PM‑KISAN and the state's complementary schemes. The higher paddy procurement prices, promised last year, have already benefited lakhs of cultivators, Modi said. The Prime Minister lamented that tribal communities had been kept 'in poverty and deprivation for decades' and 'used for political gain' by earlier governments, which in turn fueled Naxalism. Tripura CM mulls sex education in Class VIII-XII curriculum
Agartala: Tripura CM on Friday said the state govt is considering the introduction of sex education in the curriculum for students in Classes VIII to XII. Speaking at the legislative forum in the state assembly, Saha emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, "We are considering incorporating sex education and HIV/AIDS awareness in the school curriculum in Class VIII-XII. He also encouraged community involvement, suggesting that MLAs could allocate funds to support HIV/AIDS patients. Saha highlighted the equal impact of HIV/AIDS on both boys and girls and stressed the importance of engaging youth in sports, cultural activities, and other creative pursuits to steer them away from drug addiction and reduce their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. He said Tripura was the first state in India to introduce Red Ribbon Clubs in schools and plans to create youth ambassadors to lead campaigns against drug abuse. Expressing concern over the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases and injecting drug users, particularly among teenagers, Saha said an average of 120 new HIV infections are reported each month in the state, despite preventive efforts by the state AIDS Control Society. In response to a proposal by Congress legislator Sudip Roybarman, the chief minister supported the idea of adding a dedicated chapter on sex education and HIV/AIDS to the school curriculum to raise awareness among the most vulnerable age group. Additionally, he suggested that each MLA could allocate Rs 1 lakh per year from their area development fund for initiatives against drugs and HIV.

India Weighs Disruption Scenarios In Strait Of Hormuz, Prepares Backup Plans

The government is well prepared as far as the possibility of the closure of the critical trade route of Strait of Hormuz is concerned. This narrow stretch of sea might seem far from India but what happens there can directly impact your fuel bill, business and even stock market investments. The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran to the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the south. It connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and then to the Arabian Sea. In view of the fact that trade could be affected or the stakeholders and exporters may have to look for new routes which need not be cost effective the commerce ministry held a meeting with the stakeholders. Sources say that the Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal held a meeting with concerned stakeholders and departments to discuss the impact of the Iran Israel conflict on India's trade and the actions needed to normalise it. The participants were informed that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is at present stable, but nothing was being left to chance. The ship reporting system has been put in place to monitor any incidents. The freight and insurance rates are also being closely monitored. Apart from this the Commerce Secretary also stressed on the need to assess the evolving situation and its impact on Indian EXIM trade. He also highlighted the importance of exploring all possible alternatives in response to the situation. Sources said that India is also actively exploring alternative crude supply routes beyond the Persian Gulf to avoid short term disruptions if geopolitical tensions worsen. If implemented these decisions could impact major fuel importing nations from Singapore to the US. India is one of the largest exporters of petroleum products. In a worst-case scenario involving the closure of Hormuz government sources said these exports could be curtailed to maintain India's internal reserves and also to ensure we don't fall short of oil supplies. The government at the meeting today was optimistic of the fact that in the last 50 years despite crisis the Strait has never closed down. And with China using this route in a big way and extensively Iran may not be keen to close the Strait. But the Commerce Ministry is taking no chances and is closely monitoring the situation.
