India increasingly experiencing BJP's development model: PM Modi

Bhubaneswar, June 20 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the country has increasingly 'experienced the BJP's development model", pointing to the recent trajectories of Assam, Tripura and, most recently, Odisha.
Addressing a rally marking the first anniversary of Odisha's BJP government, the Prime Minister contrasted the 'previous regime's model of governance—marked by delay, obstruction, derailment and corruption' with what he called a decade of 'good governance that makes people's lives easier".
Highlighting the Eastern India as a case study, Modi said a decade ago Assam was mired in instability, separatism and violence.
"Today the guns have fallen silent and Assam is out‑pacing many other states on several parameters,' he said.
In Tripura ,the Prime Minister said after decades of Left rule, Tripura 'lagged on every development indicator,' from crumbling infrastructure to unresponsive administration.
Now, Modi argued, it has become 'a symbol of peace and progress.'
Coming to Odisha , he said, it had long wrestled with widespread corruption, red‑tapism and poor infrastructure, leaving many regions behind.
'Over the past year we have worked with full resolve to change that reality,' he declared.
Modi credited the union‑and‑state 'double engine' approach for a spate of projects worth 'thousands of crores' inaugurated on Friday. This model, he said, is delivering twin benefits:
He said lakhs of poor families in Odisha previously excluded from Ayushman Bharat now receive coverage under both the Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana and Odisha's Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana.
Nearly three crore Odias are eligible for cash‑free treatment—inside and outside the state—and more than two lakh patients have already availed themselves of the scheme in hospitals across a dozen states.
Under Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana, over 23 lakh senior citizens (70+) in Odisha can claim up to Rs.5 lakh in free medical care, significantly easing household health costs.
Modi said the farmers in Odisha now receive combined assistance under PM‑KISAN and the state's complementary schemes.
The higher paddy procurement prices, promised last year, have already benefited lakhs of cultivators, Modi said.
The Prime Minister lamented that tribal communities had been kept 'in poverty and deprivation for decades' and 'used for political gain' by earlier governments, which in turn fueled Naxalism.
'Our model brings development to these regions instead of driving them toward violence and oppression,' he asserted.

Refused Trump invite as I had to visit land of Jagannath: PM Modi

US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi (File Image) BHUBANESWAR: PM Modi Friday said he had to say 'no' to US President Donald Trump's invitation to drop by in Washington on his way back from Canada, where he had gone for the G7 summit, as he did not want to miss his scheduled visit to the "land of Lord Jagannath", reports Ashok Pradhan. While Majhi's first anniversary as CM was on June 12, the Odisha govt timed the main celebration on Friday in sync with the PM's schedule. Any change in plan could have put the govt in an awkward position in a state where BJP swept the Lok Sabha polls, winning 20 of the 21 seats, and stormed into office by winning 78 of the 147 assembly seats. Speaking at a rally in Bhubaneswar to mark one year of Mohan Charan Majhi-led BJP govt in Odisha, PM Modi said, "The President of United States called me, saying, 'Since you are in Canada, please come over. We will have a meal together and talk.' I thanked him and politely declined, saying that visiting the land of Mahaprabhu (Lord Jagannath) was essential for me. The devotion for Mahaprabhu and your love drew me here." In what was Modi's sixth visit to the state in the past one year, the PM praised Odisha's progress under the BJP govt, emphasising the state's role in India's cultural and economic development. He highlighted initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunities for the people of Odisha, particularly tribal communities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Attacking the previous Congress regimes, the PM said the party which governed India for decades had neglected the tribal community and "used them merely for political benefits". He said over 125 tribal-dominated districts were affected by Maoists for years. "Most of these districts were declared backward, and the then govts did not take the responsibility to develop them," Modi said. In contrast, the BJP-led govt freed tribal society from Naxal violence, ushering in development in these areas. The PM also highlighted the role of eastern India in the country's growth trajectory. "The development of 21st century India will gain momentum from eastern India. This is the era of Purvodaya."

After TCS, AP govt allots land to Cognizant in Vizag

Vijayawada: Continuing its aggressive incentive policy stand, Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to allot land to another IT major, Cognizant Technology Solutions , at 99 paisa per acre in Visakhapatnam. The 21.31 acres will be allotted at Kapuluppada area in the city. The State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), in its recent meeting, approved the proposal of Cognizant to invest Rs 1,583 crore in its new ITES/IT campus. The state govt earlier allotted about 21 acres to another IT services major, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), at 99 paisa per acre. The new campus of TCS is likely to be launched by the end of July. TCS has promised to provide 12,000 jobs. IT minister Nara Lokesh earlier announced that the govt is ready to give land to top IT companies at the same price as that of TCS if they come up with a promise of creating employment opportunities for local youth. "The state govt is committed to turn Visakhapatnam into the IT capital of Andhra Pradesh and a new investment destination for companies. To kick off the investment cycle rolling, a trigger is needed, and TCS will be that moment," Lokesh said earlier, justifying the allotment of land at almost free of cost to TCS. He said Tata Motors went to Gujarat after Narendra Modi, the then chief minister of Gujarat, offered land at 99 paisa per acre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "After Tata Motors landed in Gujarat, an entire ecosystem of automobile industry was created," said Lokesh. The discussions with Cognizant were initiated during the World Economic Forum summit in Davos. According to sources, Cognizant is planning its investment in three phases. The company has set a target of March 2029 for commencement of commercial operations. The project will be 100% self-funded. Together, TCS and Cognizant will bring 20,000 IT jobs to Visakhapatnam. Apart from direct employment, every job in the IT sector is expected to create indirect employment for four people. Besides TCS and Cognizant, Google is also planning to set shop in Visakhapatnam, which, according to sources, will be another major turning point in creating a whole ecosystem in new and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data centres.

TMC, BJP spar over Bengal foundation day

Kolkata: Trinamool and BJP clashed on Friday over Bengal foundation day. Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar alleged that police tried to stop a two-wheeler rally led by him from reaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's residence on Elgin Road. TMC criticised BJP, saying that the saffron party attempted to force a celebration that lacked spontaneity and with which people have no association. Centre has notified June 20 as statehood day in Bengal. Bengal govt has passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. The Friday faceoff between activists of BJP Yuva Morcha and the city police took place outside the Bhowanipore residence of Jan Sangh founding member Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, where the workers had assembled to pay their respects to the leader and then planned to reach Netaji Bhavan, a kilometre away, on two-wheelers and on foot. Suvendu Adhikari, state leader of the opposition, earlier led a march of BJP legislators from the assembly premises to the statue of Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Red Road, about two kilometres away, and garlanded it. "This is a historic day which we must observe. On this day in 1947, the West Bengal Assembly under the leadership of Syama Prasad Mookerjee passed a resolution to remain in India," Adhikari said. Trinamool hit back strongly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Heliopolis: Beautiful New Senior Apartments with Two Bedrooms Senior Apartments | Search Ads Search Now Undo "The people of Bengal have already chosen their statehood day on the first day of the Bengali calendar. It's a day close to the hearts of all Bengalis. The state assembly has already endorsed it. It doesn't matter where a motley band of BJP workers gather and try to force a celebration that lacks spontaneity and with which people have no direct association," said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. State parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay described it as "politically motivated", pointing out that state govt had already passed a resolution in the assembly and identified Poila Baisakh, the Bengali New Year's Day, for celebrating West Bengal Day. "Why is BJP suddenly so much worked up on June 20 as Paschimbanga Divas?" he asked.
