Odisha government to bring new EV policy targeting 50 per cent adoption by 2036
BHUBANESWAR : The Odisha government is all set to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) policy targeting at least 50 per cent battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in all new vehicle registrations by 2036. As part of the broader Odisha Vision 2036, the state also aims to achieve 50 pc adoption of electric and alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) by 2036. The Odisha Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0 proposes more incentives for EV buyers and charge-point operators (CPOs). On Wednesday, the departments of Commerce and Transport and Energy conducted a high-level brainstorming session to decide on the proposals to be incorporated in the revised EV policy that aims at advancing Odisha's electric mobility transition and achieving key targets. Principal secretary of Commerce and Transport Usha Padhee said, 'The EV vehicle registration is on the rise, from 1.16 pc in 2021 to 8.71 pc as on June 20. The upcoming policy will promote green mobility, reduce carbon emissions and transform the state into a model EV ecosystem in the country,' she said. Incentivisation of empanelled charge-point operators (CPOs) from the state budget on a first-come-first-serve basis, exploring internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to create a dedicated EV fund to support adoption and infrastructure and addressing range anxiety through accelerated rollout of public charging stations (PCS) in urban and semi-urban areas were also discussed.

CM-led board to prepare roadmap for development of capital economic region
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to establish a Regional Economic Development Board, chaired by chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, with a professional chief executive officer within two years in a bid to develop a strategic roadmap for the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip Economic Region (BCPPER). According to the Odisha Vision 2036 and 2047, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 20, the board will include international and national experts to create a comprehensive economic plan through a growth-hub programme for the region. "It will outline a five-year actionable roadmap with clear milestones and accountabilities," the document stated. The govt envisions BCPPER to become a US$ 500 billion hub by 2047, a significant increase from the current economy size of US$ 22 billion, which the govt targets to go up to US$ 35-45 billion by the end of its current term in 2029. Planned projects include a new city near Chandaka, inspired by GIFT City Gujarat, a 200-acre medi-city with 5,000 hospital beds in Cuttack, a 2,500-acre Aerotropolis in Puri, a 5,000-acre new industrial area between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, and a New Cuttack city over 426 acres along the Mahanadi river. An investment task force will be formed to mobilise private investments. Inspired by the role played by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the board will be responsible for strategic thinking and overall economic region planning. To ensure alignment with state priorities, it will include state-level representation, with effective stakeholder coordination and robust data management as cornerstones for cohesive regional progress. "The board, empowered through statutory acts and rules, will be crucial for the integrated development of the region, driving multi-modal connectivity and the growth of suburban and satellite cities — objectives difficult to achieve with multiple local bodies," the Vision document stated. Explaining the govt vision, industries secretary Hemant Sharma said since the capital region is growing as a densely populated area, its key driver of future growth will remain urbanisation. Maximum plans in this region would be related to the urban service sector besides industries, which will thrive on skilled manpower. "Untapped medical tourism, electronics and IT sector besides tourism would be the key drivers. Education and knowledge hubs would be main thrust areas," Sharma said. The medi-city aims to attract medical tourists, and the region will be declared a 'Special Healthcare Zone' with regulatory easing and fast-track approvals. 'New Cuttack' will be developed over reclaimed waterfront land along the Mahanadi river as a world-class ecological park and tourism destination with integrated research, sports, and rejuvenation centres, according to the Vision document. While the housing and urban development secretary will be in a lead role in the board, it will comprise more than 10 members, including secretaries from various departments such as planning and convergence, industries, electronics and information technology, tourism, forest, commerce and transport, skill development, higher education, finance, PWD, water resources and rural development. BCPPER is set to feature a 432 km capital region ring road, overlapping with the proposed coastal highway, a 148 km outer ring road centring Bhubaneswar, and a 65 km inner ring road within the state capital. The govt aims to increase non-farm jobs within BCPPER from the current 43 lakh to 60 lakh by 2029, and 70 lakh by 2036. In addition to the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip region, the govt plans to develop Bargarh-Jharsuguda-Sambalpur as a 'model agglomeration,' a similar economic corridor, within its current term. Post-2029, the govt aspires to replicate plans for Berhampur-Chhattrapur-Gopalpur and Jeypore-Koraput-Sunabeda regions. These initiatives are part of the govt's broader vision to achieve 60% urbanisation by 2047 and 40% by 2036 across the state, up from less than 20% at present.

Odisha marching forward under Majhi govt: PM
Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday showered praises on the Mohan Charan Majhi-led BJP govt in Odisha for its achievements over the past year while criticising the previous govts for not doing enough for the state and its people. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The PM also slammed the Congress model of governance, which he said had never made life easy. Speaking at an event here to mark one year of the BJP govt in Odisha, PM Modi said, "In the past year, Odisha has embraced the mantra of both vikas (development) and virasat (heritage) and has moved forward rapidly." Modi, who inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 18,600 crore, pointed out that development of entire eastern India, including Odisha, gained momentum after the BJP govt came to power in the state a year ago. He also said that from Paradip to Jajpur, the industrial sector is expanding in the state. "This is benefiting the minerals and port economy in Odisha. The state is rapidly moving towards becoming India's petrochemical hub," the PM said. Modi, who released the Odisha Vision 2036 and 2047 documents prepared by the state govt, appreciated the fact that the BJP govt is not limited to just one year's achievements or thinking about five years. "It is working on what will happen in Odisha's development road map for the coming decades. The state govt has made a special plan for when Odisha will be 100 years old in 2036. The govt also has a road map for 2047, when the country completes 100 years of independence," he said. Adding that many challenges have been identified, the PM said, "I have firm faith. The talented and vibrant youth of Odisha will achieve every milestone. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Together, we will lead Odisha to new heights of development. With this promise, once again, many congratulations to all of you." Criticising the Congress, Modi said its governance model did not make life easier for people. "Delaying and obstructing simple development projects was the hallmark of the Congress development model," Modi said. Pointing out that the country has broadly witnessed the BJP's development model in recent years, with several states electing BJP govts for the first time, he said in all such states not only has the govt changed, but a new era of social and economic transformation has also begun. He gave the example of Assam, which was marked by instability, separatism and violence a decade ago, and Tripura, which was lagging behind in development. "Today, Assam is on a new path of development… After decades of Leftist rule, people gave BJP a chance for the first time in Tripura. Everyone was troubled by violence and corruption. Since BJP got the opportunity to serve, Tripura is becoming an example of peace and progress," he said. Returning to Odisha, Modi said the state has also faced numerous problems for decades. The poor and farmers were not receiving their due rights. "Corruption was rampant, and many areas in Odisha were falling behind in development. These challenges became Odisha's misfortune. To address these challenges, the BJP govt has worked with full strength over the past year. The double-engine development is showing its benefits," he said. Modi said Odisha has a large tribal population, but unfortunately in the past, the tribal community faced neglect, backwardness, poverty and deprivation. "The party that ruled for a long time used the tribal community for political purposes without providing them development or participation," he said.
