Minnie Hauk and Lambourn land Chester trials for Aidan O'Brien

Minnie Hauk enhanced her Classic credentials by providing trainer Aidan O'Brien with a ninth victory in the Weatherbys ePassport Cheshire Oaks. Although none of Ballydoyle's eight previous winners of the Chester trial have gone on to claim the Betfred Oaks the following month, his 2018 runner-up Forever Together did go one better at Epsom, while the brilliant Enable completed the double for John Gosden in 2017. Frankel filly Minnie Hauk, who finished second on her Cork debut before scoring at Leopardstown in October, was a 13-8 favourite to add her name to the roll of honour on the Roodee. And after racing on the tail of the pacesetting Queen Of Thieves for much of the way, she finished off strongly from the home turn under Ryan Moore to score by a length from the staying-on Secret Of Love. Paddy Power cut Minnie Hauk's Oaks odds to 9-1 from 20-1 and connections quickly confirmed her a likely runner at Epsom on June 6. Paul Smith, son of Derrick Smith, part of the Coolmore triumvirate with Michael Tabor and John Magnier, said: "I think we'll be heading to Epsom after that, Aidan always thought she'd improve a lot for this run. "She's a kind, uncomplicated filly with a great attitude and the step up in trip obviously helped, so we'll be looking at the Oaks I would think." He added: "Ryan was niggling a little on the way round but he said that was just to get her interested. She always responds to the jockey and that was what she did, she just kept finding. "Aidan always says how much they learn by coming here, he picks the ones he thinks will come on the most. It's a unique track, they are so close to the crowd and they come on a ton, so he always likes to have them pointed towards here. "We don't know if she's number one, we'll see how all the trials go in the next week or so, but she has to be in the mix." Moore had to get serious with Lambourn as he put himself in the Betfred Derby picture when providing O'Brien with a record-extending 11th Boodles Chester Vase Stakes victory. Sent off the 11-8 favourite, the son of Australia was tracking the early pace set by the eventual second and third – Charlie Johnston's Lazy Griff and Karl Burke's Convergent – but came off the bridle as the race started to develop, with the Ballydoyle number one made to earn every penny of his riding fee. Moore angled his mount out rounding the turn for home and his willing partner responded to every urging from the saddle as he galloped on for what was eventually an easy length and a half success. Lambourn was subsequently cut from 50-1 to 25-1 by both Ladbrokes and Coral for the Epsom feature on June 7. Coolmore representative Paul Smith said: "I'm very happy with this colt, a lovely colt by Australia. "As you can see, he's lazy in the way he runs and he's first off the bridle often and a little bit green. He will learn a lot from today, he's got a big engine and Ryan likes him, he's a big, honest horse. "I think he's a good horse who will stay the trip, will do anything for you and he has to be in the Derby mix. "I think the key is to get the trials out of the way (before we know what type of horse he is). It's an old cliche but we won't know until they are all over and we have a better picture then, then we can make an assessment." Johnston said of the 25-1 runner-up. "It was a fantastic run, particularly given he missed a bit of work three weeks ago and it was touch and go whether we'd get here for a short while. "I'm sure we can have him fitter than he was today, he was only about 80 per cent fit, so that bodes well going forwards. "Joe (Fanning) said he appreciated the juice in the ground. Any other week, I'd have been on the phone having a go about watering, but he needed it! "We'd be a little bit hesitant about very fast ground going forwards, which might dictate where we go. "He's in the English, Irish and German Derbies and you'll certainly see him in one. "He'd been overlooked in the betting because he'd been beaten three times in his life but on ratings he should have finished second. "I'm sure as he's owned by a syndicate they are all thinking of one Derby, while I'm probably thinking he can win a different one!"

The six-time champion trainer had discussions with co-trainer son Thady earlier this week and they decided to remove the under-pressure rider as the stable's No1. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Kieran Shoemark has lost his job as John Gosden's No1 Credit: Getty There has been lots of scrutiny on Shoemark, 29, ever since he replaced Frankie Dettori at Clarehaven Stables. The yard endured a disappointing 2024 season, with their lowest number of winners since 2013, and a number of Shoemark's rides in big races were called into question. The Gosden's publicly backed their man, but he again came in for criticism when hot favourite Field Of Gold was beaten just half a length having finished strongly in the Guineas at the weekend. Gosden, who has never won the colts' Classic, said post-race the horse was 'too far back' to have a chance of catching the eventual winner Ruling Court. And it proved the breaking point in the Gosden-Shoemark relationship, with the yard now going to put up the best jockey available on their stable stars. Thady Gosden told the Nick Luck Daily Podcast: "Naturally, since Saturday myself and John have gone through things together and decided that the best policy moving forward for the stable is to adopt the best available rider strategy. 'It's still very early in the season and there's plenty of time left to go but we believe that's the right decision for the stable to have the best available rider alongside of course the significant number of retained riders pre-existing within the yard." When asked if he hopes Shoemark will still ride for the yard, he added: 'Yes. Of course, it's a best available rider policy and we'll see how that progresses as the year goes on." Shoemark will ride for the yard at Chester today, including Queen Of Thieves in the Cheshire Oaks. But he will not ride either of the stable's French 2000 and 1000 Guineas contenders, Detain and Zanzoun, at Longchamp in Paris this weekend. Colin Keane will get the leg up on Detain while Christophe Soumillon will ride Nell Gwyn Stakes winner Zanzoun in the fillies' race.
